    "Colonel" Harland David Sanders

    (September 9, 1890

    December16, 1980) was an American

    restaurateur who founded the

    Kentucky Fried Chicken(KFC) fast

    food chain.

    Harland David Sander had a

    hard time selling his chicken

    at first. In fact , his famoussecret chicken recipe was

    rejected 1,009 TIMES

    before a restaurant

    accepted it.

    IN 1930Harland was 40.

    He buys a roadsideMotel and Cafe inCorbin, Kentucky.Always an avid cook, heputs his talents to use and starts to serve his

    take on southern fried chicken to the public.Sanders opened a service station in Corbin,

    Kentucky where he cooked chicken dishes andother meals such as country ham and steaks

    for customers.Since he did not have arestaurant, he served customers in his

    adjacent living quarters. His local popularitygrew, and Sanders moved to a motel and 142seat restaurant, later Harland Sanders Caf

    and Museum. Over the next nine years hedeveloped his "secret recipe" for frying

    chicken in a pressure fryer that cooked thechicken much faster than pan frying. Sanders

    was given the honorary title "KentuckyColonel" in 1935 by Governor Ruby Laffoon.

    IN 1939Food critic Duncan Hines visited

    Sanderss restaurant incognito and wasso impressed he listed the place in

    Adventures in Good Eating, his famous

    guide to restaurants throughout the US.

    IN 1935The restaurant is doing well.

    So well that State Governor, RubyLaffoon commissions Harland as

    ''Kentucky Colonel'' for outstandingachievement in the community.

    IN 1955

    Disaster strikes: Interstate 75

    opens up and sucks awaytrade.

    The restaurant closes and at 65 Harland has to

    start again from scratch.Down, but not out, he takes his first social

    security check, pressure fryer and recipe, andsets out to sell the idea of southern fried

    chicken

    the US.Nine years later and with a growing networkof franchisees across the US, Harland feelsit's time to slow down. He is 74 after all.

    So he sells the Kentucky Fried ChickenCompany to a group of investors for $2million. But he keeps his hand in, making

    sure quality is still high and lending his image

    to the brand.
