Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Joseph’s Parish Bulletin September 8/9, 2018 THE HUMAN EFFORT TO HEAL Many times in the Gospel, Jesus works a miracle with a mere word. But sometimes he performs miracles with a physical act, as in this case, when he puts his finger into the man’s ears and touches his tongue with spittle. What are we to make of this? What can we learn from it? Many times, our healing requires a human effort. Action must be taken. We are not purely spiritual beings, but body and spirit woven into one. So our physical side plays a part. We kneel to pray. We go into the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. We make an effort to read Scripture. We do all of these physical things so that our entire being, both body and soul, can be healed of sin and grow closer to Christ. CONVERSATION WITH CHRIST Lord, I want to be your disciple. I want your truth and love to shine in my life. Open my intellect so that I can perceive your truth as it really is. Soften my heart to love you with a pure love that overflows into the hearts of those around me. Strengthen my will to choose you and your ways steadfastly. RESOLUTION I will make the effort today to set aside some time to pray away from the business of life. SPITTING, TOUCHED HIS TONGUE

To give his apostles a break from their missionary work, Jesus has taken them to Lebanon. Now he

returns, stopping at a Roman city called Scitapolis. Some

people bring him a deaf-mute and ask for a healing. Jesus does a strange thing. He sticks his fingers in the man’s ears and rubs saliva on his tongue. We might wonder why he did these unusual acts. Basically, he is using sign language, probably the only words that the man can understand. Instead of a casual "be cured", Jesus gives the man the dignity and personal care that he deserves: away from the crowd. (Father Richard Lonsdale)

Jesus, as you opened the ears of the deaf man, - open our ears to hear the cries of the poor. Jesus, as you removed the speech impediment of the deaf man. – give us the grace to speak of your love to others. Jesus, let your light penetrate into us, - transfiguring our opinion about ourselves and our attitude towards others.

PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL FOR HIS PROTECTION OVER THE CHURCH

O glorious St. Michael, guardian and defender of the Church of Jesus Christ, come to the assistance of this Church, against which the powers of hell are unchained right, guard with especial care her august Head, and obtain that for him and for us the hour of triumph may speedily arrive. O glorious Archangel St. Michael, watch over us during life, defend us against the assaults of the demon, assist us especially at the hour of death; obtain for us a favorable judgment, and the happiness of beholding God face to face for endless ages. Amen.

Everyone is invited to say the rosary during the month of October after the Mass and we will recite the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel for his protection over the Church.
