Prayer for Vocations
Compassionate Heart of Jesus, graciously listen to
our prayers. Give us generous hearts to respond to
your call in our lives. Lift up courageous men and
women willing to follow after your heart as priests,
sisters, brothers, and deacons. Help parents and
teachers to share the faith and to encourage young
people to explore religious vocations. Guide all
people, Lord, in your ways of compassion, truth,
and peace, that we may find happiness in fulfilling
our vocation. Amen.

Saints of the Week
January 17—Saint Anthony, Abbot
Saint Anthony or Antony, was a Christian
monk from Egypt, revered since his death as a
saint. He is distinguished from other saints
named Anthony such as Anthony of Padua, by
various epithets of his own: Anthony the Great,
Anthony of Egypt, Anthony the Abbot, An-
thony of the Desert, Anthony the Anchorite,
and Anthony of Thebes. For his importance among the Desert
Fathers and to all later Christian monasticism, he is also
known as the Father of All Monks. His feast day is celebrated
on January 17 among the Orthodox and Roman Catholic
churches and on Tobi 22 in the Egyptian calendar used by the
Coptic Church.

Catholicism: The New Evangelization
On Wednesday, September 5th, at 6:30 p.m.., and for the next few weeks, we will continue viewing and
discussing Fr. Robert Barron’s DVD series on “The New Evangelization.” This series will continue for the
next month, possibly longer. The New Evangelization explores the Church’s mission within the chal-
lenges of contemporary culture. Hosted by Bishop Robert Barron, the documentary focuses on the cul-
tural obstacles the Church faces today, such as the emergence of “the new atheism” and relativistic atti-
Bulletin Column for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord
The Christmas Season officially comes to an end with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, on January 13, 2019. The Bap-
tism of the Lord is a very significant event in the life of the Church for many reasons, but primarily because it begins the
public ministry of Jesus Christ and it seals our adoption as sons and daughters of God.
A family baptism is a very happy and joyous occasion. The infant is brought into the Church and is formally welcomed as
one of God’s children. He/she is recognized as part of God’s family. The Church welcomes the child with the same joy and
happiness with which the parents welcomed the child into their family. In a very real sense the family has now been ex-
tended through the Sacrament of Baptism.
Baptism means cleansing, renewing. Through the sacrament we are cleansed of the stain of Original Sin which we all inher-
ited from Adam and Eve. Jesus was baptized by John. Jesus is God. He is without sin. Then, why was Jesus baptized?
Jesus did not go into the Jordan to be made holy by the water of baptism. He went into the water to make the water holy.
This is what he meant when he said to John: “…Allow it for now,…so that all righteousness may be fulfilled…”
Righteousness means being made right with God; this could only be done by the righteous One, the very Son of God. And
so, in his humility, Jesus, the Man, makes the water holy and is recognized by the Father as “the beloved Son”, in whom, “…
I am well pleased…” By this act, we, sinners though we are, become adopted sons and daughters of God and brothers and
sisters of the Beloved Son.
God bless you,
Fr. Guy

Praying to Our Mother for others
Perpetual Candles at Sacred Heart
As May is the month of Our Lady, we are reminded that our greatest intercessor is Our Lady.
We are blessed to have three sacred spaces with candles at which we can light a candle for our
prayers and special intentions.
These candles can be used for weekly visits, as many of you already do. There is also the pos-
sibility to reserve a candle for a month(s) or a year. Some of the intentions for which a num-
ber of parishioners have reserved candles:
Deceased or living family
Condolence for friends or family
Anniversary of Marriage
Birthday
Automatically with the condolences, we send a letter to notify the grieving family of the candle
lit in our church for their loved one. We can also send a letter when requested for the others.
Visit one of our candle devotional spaces to light a candle. Fill out the form below to re-
serve a candle for a month or year.
Prayer to Saint Michael:
Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle, be
our defense against the wickedness and snares of the
devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do
thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of
God, thrust into Hell Satan and the other evil spirits
who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.
Amen.
Preghiera a San Michele:
San Michele Arcangelo, difendici nella battaglia; sii tu nostro sostegno contro la perfidia e le insidie del diavolo; che Dio eserciti il suo dominio su di lui, te ne preghiamo supplichevoli; e tu, o Principe della milizia celeste, con la potenza divina, ricaccia nell'inferno satana e gli altri spiriti maligni i quali errano nel mondo per perdere le anime. AMEN.

From the time that we were young kids growing up in Dorchester receiving First Communion, through our marriage, as we brought up our own four boys, and now as grandparents, Boston priests have been a guiding light that we reach out to in different situations that have come up in our lives. As parents, our faith life has helped us to guide our family. We are an ordinary family, and, like all families, things don’t always go smoothly. The priests we have known through the years, like Fr. Peter Martocchio, have helped us to learn to take things in stride and put our faith in God, and that there is always hope. While not perfect, ours has been a wonderful life, which has been enriched by many Boston priests who have helped us along the way.

Priests have been a constant presence throughout our lives. Boston Priests. Here for us.
