1. “Dear brothers and sisters, let us begin our Lenten journey with joyful confidence. May we feel deep within us the call to conversion, to “return to God with all our heart”, accepting his grace which makes us new men and women, with that astonishing newness which is a share in the very life of Jesus. May none of us be deaf to this appeal, which also comes to us in the austere rite, at once so simple and so evocative, of the imposition of ashes, which we are about to celebrate.” – 2013

2. “Lent reminds us, therefore, that Christian life is a never-ending combat in which the “weapons” of prayer, fasting and penance are used. Fighting against evil, against every form of selfishness and hate, and dying to oneself to live in God is the ascetic journey that every disciple of Jesus is called to make with humility and patience, with generosity and perseverance.” – 2006

3. “This is our responsibility, following in St Paul’s foot-steps, a further reason for living Lent fully: in order to bear a witness of faith lived to a world in difficulty in need of returning to God, in need of conversion.” – 2011

4. “Prayer is a crucible in which our expectations and aspi-rations are exposed to the light of God’s Word, immersed in dialogue with the One who is the Truth, and from which they emerge free from hidden lies and compromises with various forms of selfishness (cf. Spe Salvi, n. 33). Without the dimension of prayer, the human “I” ends by withdraw-ing into himself, and the conscience, which should be an echo of God’s voice, risks being reduced to a mirror of the self, so that the inner conversation becomes a monologue, giving rise to self-justifications by the thousands.” – 2008

5. “…Ashes are one of the material signs that bring the cosmos into the Liturgy. The most important signs are those of the Sacraments: water, oil, bread and wine, which become true sacramental elements through which we receive the grace of Christ which comes among us. The ashes are not a sacramental sign, but are nevertheless linked to prayer and the sanctification of the Christian people.” – 2012

6. “Precisely due to the richness of the symbols and of the biblical and liturgical texts, Ash Wednesday is considered the “door” to Lent. In effect, today’s liturgy and the gestures that mark it, together form, in anticipation and in a synthetic way, the very physiognomy of the entire period of Lent.” – 2007

7. “This absolute certainty sustained Jesus during the 40 days he spent in the Judean desert, after he had received

Baptism from John in the Jordan. For him that long period of silence and fasting was a complete abandonment of himself to the Father and to his plan of love. The time was a “baptism” in itself, that is, an “immersion” in God’s will and in this sense a foretaste of the Passion and of the Cross. Going out into the desert alone to remain there at length meant exposing himself willingly to the assaults of the enemy, the tempter who brought about Adam’s fall and whose envy caused death to enter the world (cf. Wis 2: 24). It meant engaging in battle with him, with nothing but the weapon of boundless faith to challenge him, in the omnipotent love of the Father.” – 2010

9. “Fasting, to which the Church invites us in this particular season, certainly is not motivated by the physical or aes-thetical order, but stems from the need that man has for an interior purification that detoxifies him from the pollu-tion of sin and evil; it educates him to that healthy renunci-ation which releases the believer from the slavery to self; that renders him more attentive and open to listen to God and to be at the service of the brethren.” – 2007

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul will be holding

our monthly collection on March 14th and 15th, and

our volunteers will be at the church doors after all of

the Masses. During the last month, we were blessed

to receive $3,651 from our collection boxes and many very generous

benefactors. With your gifts, we provided $7,249 in assistance to the

needy in the last month. Our volunteers were able to bring God’s love

and mercy to 30 families, providing: $4,965 in rental assistance; $625

in utility bill assistance; $699 in food assistance; and $460 in

miscellaneous assistance. We also donated $500 to help the St

Vincent de Paul conferences in Puerto Rico to provide food for those

impacted by the earthquake. Those who benefit from your donations

are most appreciative of your generosity. In the Gospels we see how

Jesus encouraged his followers to treat those in need with mercy. In

the winter, many people who have never needed help in the past,

become overwhelmed with increased heating bills, unexpected

medical bills, car repairs and many other large bills. To make the

situation even worse, many people have reduced income due to work

schedule cutbacks. You can treat those in need with mercy by giving

to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, so that we can help those who

come to us for help to avoid eviction, avoid utility shutoff and avoid

hunger for themselves and their children. We gratefully acknowledge

your generous contributions of money and time to help those in need

in Salem.

Spiritual Corner - Growing in Our Faith “Come to Me all you who Labor and are overburdened,

and you will find rest” (Matthew 11:28)

Eucharistic Adoration, The Space of Rest - Eucharistic Adoration takes place every Thursday in the Chapel beginning at 9:30 am (after the 9 am Mass). The Blessed Sacrament will be displayed from 9:30 am to 7 pm. The Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 pm. Please consider spend-ing an hour with the Lord in quiet, prayerful time. We in-vite a minimum of two (2) people commit per hour to en-sure that someone is always present with the Lord (Could you not watch with me one hour? Matthew 26:40). Sign-up sheets will be available each week in the Chapel on

Monday through Friday and in the church on Saturday & Sunday. This is an opportunity to take time from our busy lives and spend quality time with the Lord.

First Friday Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus will begin on Friday, March 6, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. Devotions will begin with the Way of the Cross. During that time there will be an opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. A Healing Mass will be offered at 7:00 pm.

O glorious St. Ann, you are filled with compassion for those who invoke you and with love for those who suffer! Heavily burdened with the weight of my troubles, I cast myself at your feet and humbly beg of you to take the present intention which I recommend to you in your special care. Please recommend it to your daughter, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and place it before the throne of Jesus, so that He may bring it to a happy issue. Continue to intercede for me until my request is granted. But, above all, obtain

for me the grace one day to see my God face to face, and with you and Mary and all the saints to praise and bless Him for all eternity. Amen.

Sacrament of the Sick: One of the gifts of the Second Vatican Council was the renewal of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. This beautiful sacrament is no longer reserved for a person in danger of death, but should be celebrated by anyone with a serious illness, a person facing serious surgery, or a person in a weakened condition. The next celebration of this sacrament will be fol-lowing the 4:00 pm Mass on March 21st . The sacrament is also available for people in their homes by calling the Parish Office at 978-744-1930. Anyone terminally ill or beginning Hospice Care should receive this sacrament as soon as possible.

We would love to increase the size of our Bell Choir. If you are interested and would like to see how the handbells work, please stop by church on Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. We will be happy to give you a demonstration.
