The Foundations of Catholic Health is pleased to present our 2015 annual report as we demonstrate how our five Foundations – Continuing & Home Care Foundation, Kenmore Mercy Foundation, Mercy Hospital Foundation, Mount St. Mary’s Hospital

Foundation and Sisters Hospital Foundation – continue to make an impact on the lives of people throughout Western New York.

Each Foundation is guided by our Mission Statement as we are called to reveal the healing love of Jesus Christ to those in need.

This mission…our ministry…our passion…would not be possible without the contributions of each and every one of our generous donors. We are truly grateful.

The Foundations are critical to ensuring that Catholic Health facilities in communities across the region continue to offer the highest quality health care for all God’s children – our neighbors, families, seniors, and the disadvantaged. To give to any of our Foundations is to care for others as you will see in the stories included in this report. Our stewardship of the gifts our supporters provide enables new technologies in patient care, while building on the Catholic Health legacy of caring for the whole person, mind, body and spirit.

On behalf of the Foundations of Catholic Health, I extend sincere thanks to all who give of their time, talents and treasures -- our Board Members and Trustees, dedicated staff, physicians, nurses, generous donors and many supporters. May this collaboration in care continue to strengthen the healing love that infuses our ministry.

and surprising, one of John’s sisters from Savannah, Georgia, noted that he was an astute investor who gave to charities according to his principles as a devout Catholic.

“I think he recognized something special in Kenmore Mercy and wanted to leave a gift that would have a major impact on the care we provide,” says Susan Jandzinski, Executive Director of the Kenmore Mercy Foundation.

“We cannot express how grateful we are for his kind decision to support Kenmore Mercy in such a significant way,” concludes James M. Millard, president and CEO of the hospital.

Donor SpotlightGENEROUS GRATITUDEDonor Spotlight: John Repetski

John Repetski was a longtime supporter of Kenmore Mercy, having been a patient as well as a neighbor, residing in Buffalo’s Riverside

area, a short distance from the hospital. The Marine Corps veteran of both World War II and the Korean War worked for 34 years at General Motors, retiring as a chief metallurgist.

It seems appropriate then that his gift to Kenmore Mercy shows he had a heart of gold.

John passed away in 2015 and left a $2.3 million bequest to benefit Kenmore Mercy – the largest gift from an individual donor in the hospital’s 65-year history. While the gift was unexpected

COOLING TRENDTherapeutic Hypothermia System

It is called a Therapeutic Hypothermia System, one of the latest advancements in cardiovascular care. Now, thanks to the support of the Kenmore Mercy Foundation, this advanced technology is available to help patients at Kenmore Mercy recover after sudden cardiac arrest.

A $50,000 grant from the Foundation helped the hospital to establish the Therapeutic Hypothermia System this past summer. It is a non-invasive treatment technique used to prevent brain damage in patients who are resuscitated after cardiac arrest. After a patient’s heart stops, events can occur that may cause swelling and injury to brain tissue.

The Therapeutic Hypothermia System is used to lower the patient’s body tempera-ture for an extended period of time, reducing the risk of injury to the brain.

According to Kristen Parisi, Nurse Manager at Kenmore Mercy, the system provides an evidence-based best practice and gives cardiac arrest patients the best chance of survival with a positive outcome.

“The system allows our nurses to concentrate on the patient and not on regulating temperature,” explains Kristen. “Our team would like to thank the Foundation for making this therapy possible in the ICU – we are using the system one to two times per month on average.”

Funding from the Mercy Hospital Foundation enables the cardiac program to continue its progress, with the addition of two more hybrid operating rooms designed for increased efficiency. A new cardiac cath lab is also in the design phase, adding flexibility to care for more patients.

“The sobering fact is that Erie and Niagara counties have the highest rates of cardiovascular disease in New York state,” explain C.J. Urlaub, president and CEO of Mercy Hospital. “Donors to the Mercy Hospital Foundation play an important role in ensuring that we can provide the full continuum of cardiac care.”

CARDIAC CAREHearts Changed & Lives Transformed

The cardiac program at Mercy Hospital continues to grow, with more cardiac procedures performed there last year than ever. In fact,

Catholic Health cardiologists treat 45% of all cardiac patients in Western New York and the majority of those patients receive care at Mercy Hospital.

The “Hearts Changed & Lives Transformed” project couldn’t have come at a better time as Mercy Hospital expands cardiac care to meet this growing demand.

The project resulted in a 25-bed interventional unit which opened this past April. The unit brings together all cardiac interventional procedures in one place, and offers greater comfort and convenience to patients and their families.

Donor SpotlightEMPOWERING PEOPLEDonor Spotlight: William G. McGowan Fund

The Mercy Comprehensive Care Center (MCCC), a division of Mercy Hospital, serves the primary medical needs of children and adults in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the City of Buffalo. A culturally diverse patient base continues to grow, resulting in more than 38,000 visits to the Center last year.

To help educate the Center’s neighbors and patients on the importance of preventive care, Mercy Hospital Foundation secured a grant award of $37,750 in 2015 from the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund. The funds will support a program that provides patient-centered education and outreach called “Empowering Buffalo: Nurturing a Healthy Neighborhood.” The aim is to improve health and reduce visits to the Center by encourag-ing families to seek preventive care, follow good nutrition and make healthy choices.

The William G. McGowan Charitable Fund was established by the family of the late William McGowan, renowned head of MCI, the former telecommunications giant. Mercy Hospital sought funding for the outreach program from this fund because of its commitment to support organizations with proven success in changing and improving societal conditions.

When I first learned about MCCC and their outreach efforts, it seemed that all the right services were finally under one roof,” explains Marianne Rosica Brand, board member at the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund. “Their efforts have hit the nail right on the head.”

guardianship, as the boys’ mother struggled with substance abuse.

“Our goal is to help those in need receive the services they need, while taking responsibility for improving their own life situation,” says Sister Nora Sweeney, a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul and social worker at the Center. “Mary and her grandsons have worked so hard to get to where they are today – their story shows how we offer a hand up, not a hand out.”

FAMILY MATTERSNeighborhood Health Center

As Mary talks about her three grandsons, the boys sit quietly reading some favorite books. It is a far cry from when Mary first came with

them to Mount St. Mary’s Neighborhood Health Center in Niagara Falls.

Each grandson has a form of autism, a term for complex disorders of brain development. When Mary turned to the Center for help, the boys could not speak and were unable to sit still for more than a few minutes. Today, the boys are in school, they love to read, and play music.

The Center, located in the poorest area of Niagara Falls, connected Mary with the services the boys needed, including occupational and speech therapy, and reading instruction. The Center also helped Mary attain

Donor SpotlightADDED SMILESDonor Spotlight: Robert A. Minicucci and Robert J. Travis

Bob Minicucci and Bob Travis smile just thinking about it. The Caring Smiles dental program at Mount St. Mary’s Neighborhood Health Center has helped so many underserved individuals and families obtain dental services that they otherwise would not be able to afford.

These services are critical to the overall health and well-being of the patients, improving their ability to eat, speak and make facial expressions. Most importantly, the services give the patients back their self-confidence. “It warms your heart to see what a difference the dental care makes in the lives of the patients served – not only for their health, but in giving them the self-assurance to be part of the community,” Bob Travis explains. “It is very rewarding to know we are helping the whole person.”

Both men serve on the Board of Directors for Catholic Health and together, the “Bob Team” set a record by helping raise over $30,000 directly for the Neighborhood Health Center and more than $135,000 for Caring Smiles during the Annual Good Works Gala in 2015. The additional funding helped expand dental provider hours for the Neighborhood Health Center’s partnership at Empower, where nearly 400 patients receive treatments each year. Bob Minicucci has been a major driving force behind the Center since it expanded in 2010 and Bob Travis is grateful his friend asked him to get involved too.

the Daughters of Charity instilled in our hospital,” says Peter U. Bergmann, president and CEO of Sisters Hospital. “We are forever indebted to these remarkable women and the Heritage Corridor inspires us to continue advancing their ministry of service.”

Over the years, more than 850 Sisters of the Daughters of Charity served Western New York in many different capacities. The Heritage Corridor serves as a lasting tribute to their grace, determination and compassion on which the hospital continues to build.

HONORED HERITAGEHeritage Corridor

Sisters of Charity Hospital dedicated its Heritage Corridor this past year in honor of the legacy of the Daughters of Charity, who founded

the hospital nearly 170 years ago as Buffalo’s first hospital.

The Heritage Corridor at Sisters Hospital is a permanent historical display that chronicles the founding of the hospital in 1848 by the Daughters of Charity and ensures their legacy of care in our community will never be forgotten. Made possible by the support of Sisters Hospital Foundation, the exhibit includes displays, historical photographs and a timeline.

“The Heritage Corridor is not a museum, but rather a visible reflection of the spirit of unselfish service, especially to the poor and disadvantaged,

Donor SpotlightTWIN TRIBUTEDonor Spotlight: Keith & Dawn Vona

Keith and Dawn Vona went through an unimaginable loss when in 2015 their twins – Zander Paul and Whitney Elizabeth – passed away in the womb. The couple says the care they received at Sisters of Charity Hospital through the Footprints on the Heart program was a Godsend in helping them heal during this traumatic experience.

“We were touched by so many caring individuals, and they made this trying time at least a little more bearable,” explains Keith.

“Our gift is meant to help other parents who face a similar situation, and hopefully bring some comfort,” adds Dawn.

The Vona family donated more than $20,000 to Sisters Hospital Foundation, directing part of the funding to be used for training of staff to help parents and families who suffer the loss of a child.

The money was raised when Keith decided to create a fundraising effort around competing in an Iron Man event last summer in Canada that included a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike course and 26.2-mile run. With the support of family and friends, Keith not only completed the competition, he carried the birth hats of their twins – provided by Sisters Hospital – over the finish line of the run in tribute to them.

Some examples include an innovative, web-based program called Linked Senior Adaptive Technology. The technology utilizes tablets and kiosks that enable residents at Father Baker Manor to engage in more meaningful activities for learning, socializing and entertaining.

Foundation funds have also supported a blood testing system that utilizes a simple prick of the finger, not a needle, to reduce pain and increase comfort. Additionally, the facility was able to install automatic door openers leading to outdoor green space, increasing resident safety and making access easier.

SENIOR SUPPORTFather Baker Manor

Father Baker Manor is a Catholic Health, 160-bed skilled nursing facility in Orchard Park, providing for long-term care needs as well as short-

stay rehabilitation care for patients after surgery.

Administrator Mark Wheeler notes that the support of the Continuing and Home Care Foundation enables Father Baker Manor to provide programs and services that enhance the quality of life for its senior residents. “Donors should understand their generosity enables us to offer the extras to make our residents and patients as comfortable as possible,” he explains. “We provide so many patient-centered activities, programs and items that would not be possible without the Foundation’s help.”

Donor SpotlightFAITHFUL FRIENDDonor Spotlight: Magdalene M. Klingenmeir

Magdalene Klingenmeir was a devout Catholic who dedicated her life to supporting the care of others. A lifelong resident of Lancaster, NY and a parishioner at St. Mary’s, “Madge,” as friends called her, worked as a legal secretary, never marrying or having children. She loved spending time with her two sisters and their families and was active in countless volunteer roles, from the Catholic Women’s Guild at her parish to St. Elizabeth’s Adult Home in Lancaster, a Catholic Health long-term care facility.

Madge would later live at St. Elizabeth’s and spend time at another Catholic Health facility, Father Baker Manor in Orchard Park, for rehab care following an injury. The care she received at both centers so impressed her, she created a Planned Gift as part of her estate to support St. Elizabeth’s and Father Baker Manor when she passed.

Madge passed away in 2014, and in 2015, the Continuing & Home Care Foundation received her $120,000 planned gift to be divided between the two facilities to support their ongoing ministries.

“Madge was very faithful and frugal,” said a long-time friend and executor of her estate. “I knew her for more than thirty years and always admired her care and concern for others. She would be very proud knowing her life’s vocation continues to support seniors in our community.”
