DevelopmentArch + UD Career Services continued to grow this year, offering an unprecedented amount of programming, with 9 events during the fall semester and 13 events during the spring semester. A few key developments this year include:
1. Alumni Mentorship ProgramWith the help of the GSAPP Alumni Board, CS launched the Alumni Mentorship Program in fall of 2015. The program matches current students with GSAPP alumni for the course of one academic year. 35 alumni participated and were matched with 41 students (some alumni mentored two students). At the end of the year, critical feedback was collected from both students and alumni to help further develop next year’s program.
2. Elective Internship Course This new course allows students the opportunity to apply their expertise and skills in a real world setting, while further exploring their interests and working environments. Curriculum Practical Training (CPT) is provided to international students, allowing them to work in the United States without using their year of OPT time. Between Fall 2015-Summer 2016, 23 students took the course.
3. Re-organization of Professional Portfolio Review and Career Fairs This year, the Professional Portfolio Review was held during the Fall semester. The event allowed students the opportunity to receive critical feedback on their professional portfolios from GSAPP alumni, while practicing their interviewing skills, and expanding their professional networks. Holding the event in the fall rather than the spring gave students more time to implement the feedback they received before the spring career fairs.
The career fairs were renamed to the Internship Career Fair, held in February, and the Graduating Student Career Fair in April. All M.Arch, AAD, and UD students were invited to participate in the Internship Career Fair, while the Graduating Student Career Fair, as the name implies, invited only graduating students to participate. This new format was more effective and lead to higher student attendence at both events.
Career Services:
MissionCareer Services for Architecture and Urban Design programs is a student-driven organization that aims to reflect the experimental nature of GSAPP by engaging the broader professional community through workshops, professional development panels, info sessions, alumni networking and career development events.
Additionally, Career Services strives to create opportunities for students to leverage their unique skills and strategically position themselves within a profession that is radically shifting and growing.

Provided Services: Arch + UD Career Services offers students a variety of resources to assist them with the transition from GSAPP and into the work force, including:
• Career CounselingCS Officer meets with students to discuss career goals, job searching resources, salary negotiations, interview preparation, and any other concerns.
• Resume, Cover Letter, and Work Samples ReviewA strong resume, cover letter and work samples are crucial to the job search process. During one-on-one meetings with students, the CS Officer reviews and edits their application materials. After the initial meeting, students often send their updated materials to CS for another round of edits. This year, 92 students and recent alumni met with the CS Officer for assistance with their application materials.
Additionally, in summer 2015 CS published a short booklet called, “How to Get a Job: A Career Planning Guide for Architecture and Urban Design Students,” which includes an instructive essay by Paul Segal about the job searching process, interview tips, and how to negotiate your salary. Subsequent sections provide students with detailed information regarding successful resumes, cover letters, work samples, interview skills, and networking. To view the booklet, please click here.
• Peer-to-peer Professional Portfolio ReviewEach year Career Services hires a student Portfolio Mentor to review and edit students’ professional portfolios. Over the course of the 2015-2016 academic year, CS Portfolio Mentor, Eugene Chang, meet with 60 students.
• Mock InterviewsCS Officer offers one-on-one mock interviews, providing students with the opportunity to improve their skills through practice. One student took advantage of this service this year. CS hopes to increase student awareness of this resource.
• Biweekly Newsletter Career Services biweekly newsletter is e-mailed to students and highlights exciting employment opportunities, upcoming Career Service events, and features engaging off-campus events to encourage students to explore the larger architectural community in New York City.
• Student Job BoardThe student job board is unique to GSAPP, since it lists only employment opportunities that are directly submitted to the CS Officer. The board is password protected and listings are updated daily.

PANEL DISCUSSIONS
Professional Development Panel Discussions invite GSAPP alumni and experts to speak to students about a range of professional topics. Each hour-long event consists of a moderated conversation between 4-5 panelists followed by 15 minutes of student Q&A.
This year CS held three panel discussions: The Entrepreneurship Question, a critical discussion regarding the role of entrepreneurship in architecture; Diversity in Design, which discussed the progress women and minorities have made in the field while also acknowledging the persistent challenges; and Perspectives on Practice, which discussed the role of licensure in the rapidly changing field of Architecture.

INFO SESSIONS/WORKSHOPS
Info Sessions and Workshops provide instruction to students on a range of professional topics. For example, the workshop Designing Business Models focused on how to develop successful business strategies, understanding operational processes and infrastructure, among other topics, that provide students with practical entrepreneurial skills.
This year, four additional information sessions were introduced into CS programming that prepared students for the portfolio review, career fairs and alumni networking events. These short presentations were led by the Career Services Officer, and helped to improve student performance during these events.
