September 2014 Volume II Issue 08 First Baptist Church of Smithville First Baptist Crossings View from the Pulpit One of the beautiful things about a church is the way a family of faith is connected across the generations. Our past, our present, and our future come together as we continue to serve the name of the Lord through the ministries of First Baptist Church. In the last two years our church has experienced several losses in the passing of many beloved church members. We h a v e continued to remember them and honor their part in our church’s story as we’ve spoken their names, shared memorable stories, and embodied the teachings we learned from them. In recent months our church has been greatly blessed by the use of several of their memorial funds and it is yet another way that their legacy lives on in our church. Through the memorials given for Loren Foster we have been able to tint the sanctuary windows which has improved lighting in the sanctuary and security for the building. Loren’s memorials will also be used in the upcoming month for projector and screen tune - ups in our sanctuary. Memorials for Mary Pigg (Dorothy Huntley’s mother) were used to purchase new kitchen items and, combined with memorials for Powell Keeney and Warren Gerren (Tammy Kelly’s father), two new rockers were purchased for the sanctuary foyer. These rockers are for parents of y o u n g children who would like to still be a part of worship, but would prefer to sit in the back as they rock or feed their child. We also have two beautiful, hand- crafted, wooden shelves for the children’s worship bags which were purchased with some of the memorial funds given for Joe Swaney. I have no doubt that these additions and updates to our church will be a constant reminder of our church’s story and the members who have gone before us, but have left their mark on this congregation. Our church’s story is also about what is happening now - in the present. There are so many wonderful things happening in our church that fill my heart with joy, but one in particular was in August when we took part in ordaining eight new deacons, three of whom are our church’s first female deacons. ( David Chiles, Linda Frazier, Randy Holmes, Carol Sha er, Andy Bettis, Donna White, David Petty, Joel White) These eight are a part of our story and through their servant leadership, I look forward to the many ways that God will use them to care for and guide our church family today and tomorrow. May we remember that we are tied to one another in Christian love - our past, our present, our future. “Blest be the tie that binds.” Pastor Stephanie
