August 2014 Volume II Issue 07 First Baptist Church of Smithville First Baptist Crossings View from the Pulpit Ministers always expect the Advent a n d Lenten seasons to be the busiest times of year, but I’d have to say that these last four weeks have been even more exhausting. But it’s been a good exhaustion! We finished o a great VBS to work on final preparations for youth camp and then last week headed out to join over 425 youth and adults at Unidiversity Camp at the University of Tennessee. While at camp I don’t think I ever slept more than 5 hours a night. I survived ocoee most mornings (and afternoons). And I gave my legs a pretty good workout hiking up the hills of the UT campus. But I also watched as our thirteen youth, along with hundreds of others, learned more about God and our shared humanity. They learned that we are all broken. That we are all forgiven. That we are all invited. That we are all powerful. And then we were challenged with our response to those truths: Would we be vulnerable with one another? Would we accept one another? Would we welcome one another? Wo u l d we be responsible with that power? We glimpsed the table of God and began to imagine how we can be a part of making that table a place where everyone can find t h e i r place. It was a memorable week and I am grateful to have spent that time with our youth. It was also a great opportunity for us to christen Cody Wilson as our new Youth Director! Having been a part of the FBC family for around 25 years, Cody has a deep love for our church and our mission. During the interim period Cody stepped up and helped out in many ways with our youth and we were pleased to o er her a staposition. Cody has already begun to build great relationships with each of our youth and is energized about the ways she can help our youth continue to grow in their faith. A BIG THANKS also goes out to the many others who volunteered over the last four months to help with our youth group, particularly Christen Doerzbacher and Courtney Jones who were two of our key leaders on Wednesday nights. I’m so very thankful for our youth and all the support our church has shown them and am looking forward to seeing how God continues to shape them! Pastor Stephanie
