Final Ideas for my Final Opening Coursework Task

Genre The chosen genre of my film and film opening is the a sub genre of thriller, mystery thriller. Mystery thriller is characterized and defined by the moods they elicit, giving viewers heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, genre that focuses on the unstable emotional or mental states of the characters. I am for the genre of my film to be full of mystery and keep the audience engaged and genuinely interested in the film. Narrative & Plot The film opening will be about a male character who has given up on everything and wants to start new. It will begin with a male character packing up his belongings and start to make his way out of this hometown. From the different shots we get to see as the audience the journey he is going on, travelling by himself, then suddenly we see him spinning around stuck in a busy town to then spinning around in a desert lost in his thoughts. As he is making his way out into the desert he experiences flashbacks of the good and bad memories with school, family and friends and the audience see this from his facial expressions. This will also inform the audience about the life he had in the town he grew up in.

Title Sequence The title sequence will begin after the first few initial opening shots which will all be establishing shots to inform and give awareness to the audience of the location the character is in or will face, such as the desert. The title sequence will consist of a series of fast cutting transitional images of the central character. This will keep the audience engage and allow them to connect with the character shown.

Characters Main character: The main character will be a man who is struggling to handle stress, school and his social life. From the various camera shots The audience will get to be drawn in with this character as they will get to understand the emotions he is going through with the facial expre. Visuals To make my film opening look like it ‘fits in with my chosen genre’, psychological thriller, I will be using my skills on the different lighting and sound techniques which will then create a certain emotion that the audience will feel. For example, I am considering on filming a few shots that may be darkened more than others doing this will excite the audience and will grab their attentions as they will want to see clearly on what is about to happen later on. This will fit in with my genre as it is full of mystery and allows the audience to then focus on the mental stages of the character.

Locations These are the two main locations which I would like to focus on in my film opening along with the main character. I thought of these two specific locations as they are completely different to one another. The streets are busy with cars and people moving in every direction and we see from the main character that he is struggling to find his way around, then suddenly we see him in a stranded peaceful desert.

Sound and Soundtrack The sounds I plan on using in my film opening won’t be taking too much attention away from what the message the actor is trying to give across to the audience but will be making the whole story a lot more interesting and exciting to look at. As soon as the character is spinning around with confusion in the middle of the busy streets, the soundtrack will speed up adding tension and should engage the audience even more as they will want to know what is going to happen. Summary of Idea and Audience Considerations At the end of this task I hope to produce a film opening which will be successful. This being that I have interested the audience and kept them engaged throughout the whole film sequence. I think this is something I am able to do, as the storyline is something that is relatable, however, it is also something that wouldn’t usually happen e.g. travelling to one place to the other in seconds. This is what keeps the storyline interesting, as the two locations are completely different to each other which adds contrast.
