P2P

FTTH solutions

Fiber To The Home FTTH is a new and exciting market which will revolutionise the way people live, work and play. As an alternative to the traditional copper or indeed hybrid copper and fiber architec-tures, FTTH takes the fiber optic transmission directly into a people’s homes or offices. This eliminates the potential bottlenecks caused by using copper or coaxial cables in the last mile and offers a future proofed architecture unaffected by bandwidth hungry services such as high definition television (HDTV) or movies on demand. The vast bandwidth capability of fiber optics has opened new doors for operators, service providers and developers who are eager to capitalise on the service delivery and revenue opportunities only fiber can deliver. Users themselves are pulling through the demand for higher performance networks through the increase in video streaming, game playing, IP telephony and high definition television (HDTV). Whichever way you look at it, FTTH is the only architecture capable of delivering both the revenue and service packages demanded by operator and end users alike.

Point-to-Point (P2P)

The P2P topology utilises a single fiber directly from the central office to the end user. This approach requires a large quantitiy of fibers and subsequently high density Optical Dis-tribution Racks. The LISA system offers 2000+ fibers per Optical Distribution Rack (ODR) making it ideally suited to P2P topologies. Combined with the Equipment Distribution Rack (EDR) and the fiber containment system, customers can benefit from a turn-key solution dedicated to managing fibers between passive and active racks.

PON

wdm-PON

Passive Optical Network (PON) - BPON, GPON, EPON

The classical PON topology uses TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) to share optical transmission signals. A single fiber can be fed from the central office and then split up to 64 times making it a cost-effective approach that doesn’t rely on a fiber rich infrastructure. One advantage of PON’s is the ability to add an «overlay» signals to the fiber so that existing analogue TV signals can be maintained with minimum disruption to the End User. Focused on achieving highest bandwidth and maximum reach, HUBER+SUHNER offer high grade power splitters and Wave Division Multiplexers (WDM’s) capable of being deployed in a number of different configurations and packages.

Wave Division Multiplexing PON (WDM-PON)

The WDM architecture is a revolutionary new PON that splits wavelengths over multiple subscribers. This approach still benefits from fewer fibers in the long-haul links but allows unlimited bandwidth potential at the customer premises. HUBER+SUHNER is one of the first companies to embrace this technology and we can offer solutions which manage the WDM modules and also the high density connections between module and transmission equipment.

Central office

High density Optical Distribution Racks With a standard port count of 960 fibers and 1920 using small form factor connectors HUBER+SUHNER’s wide range of Optical Distribution Racks is industry leading for fiber density and easy handling. Ideal for central offices and POP stations, our unrivalled den-sity offers single rack solutions where others require double or even treble the number of racks to achieve the same performance.

Designed in collaboration with installers and operators, the LISA ODR incorporates many features not possible using conventional 19” cabinets and splicing panels. For example, the LISA ODR is only 300 mm deep and its «c-shaped design» allows unrestricted access to all internal elements from the front side. This not only reduces installation and servicing time, but offers customers the opportunity to position ODR’s back-to-back for double density within a 600 mm standard footprint. In addition, the c-shaped design also allows cables to be patched from the ODR directly to adjacent switch equipment without the need to enter the raised floor void or overhead containment system. This reduces CAPEX and OPEX especially in small POP stations where only a few racks are located.

LISA ODRs are configured using modular and scalable subracks. This «building block» ap-proach offers maximum flexibility with the option of matching fiber upgrades with customer take-up rates. LISA termination modules support all connectivity types and offer a wide array of ap-plications in a single generic footprint so that one product covers all existing and future customer requirements.

Bend radius control and dedicated fiber routing is fundamental to our design principle and helps to prevent unnecessary operational costs through poor traceability, long installs and periodic failures.

This combination of performance and handling makes the LISA system the number one solution for P2P or PON networks.

Central office

FTTH networks are naturally «fiber-rich» however P2P topologies in particular have led to an increased uncertainty as to how such high volumes of fibers can be managed in a central office environment. In response, HUBER+SUHNER has developed the EDR (Equipment Distribution Rack) to reduce cable chaos which occurs when high numbers of fibers are connected between Optical Distribution Racks and nearby switches or routers.

Many of the valuable features incorporated in our standard passive LISA ODR have been duplicated within the EDR to create better synergy across the complete passive and active system. In collaboration with various equipment manufacturers, HUBER+SUHNER has created a product which is compatible to all types of switch products regardless of depth, line-card orientation or density.

Based around a c-shaped construction, the EDR offers maximum fiber handling and storage space with the additional benefit of «in-rack cable routing» should multiple racks be bayed side by side. This ability to store patch cables in the equipment rack not only improves the quality of installations but also reduces the amount of different cable lengths required to link two or more racks.

The close family connection between EDR and ODR means that for the first time, FTTH customers can benefit from a truly optimised solution in their central offices and POP stations. The reduction of compatibility problems and resulting cable congestion will lead to a higher performance network with substantial operational savings over time.

Central office

Fiber containmentFiber containment provides a safe and effective routing system for fiber optic cables within FTTH central offices or POP stations, and ensures that Moves, Adds and Changes (MAC’s) are carried out in an organised and methodical way. Unlike conventional cable baskets, fiber containment encapsulates the fiber optic cables within a fire resistant material and ensures that a minimum bend radius of 30 mm is maintained at every junction point in the network. These features extend the recovery time in disaster situations but more importantly ensure that planning and installation costs are kept to an absolute minimum.

Dedicated containment provides planners with structured frameworks from which to plan new cable routes or lengths. This alone can contribute to dramatic OPEX savings over time especially in applications where individual patchcords are deployed between passive and active cabinets.

Snap together components make the LISA ducting range extremely easy to assemble with limited tools and training. New routes can be deployed overhead or under-floor to suit individual customer requirements and a portfolio of over 300 components ensures that every critical point in the central office is catered for whether high volume cable runs or in cabinet drop offs.

The LISA ducting system has been recognised for its broad range of components and its compatibility with other systems on the market. HUBER+SUHNER considers the LISA ducting system to be a vital element in achieving cost-effective future-proofed FTTH networks.

Cables and cable systemsHUBER+SUHNER design and manufacture a wide variety of indoor and outdoor cables with the highest quality materials and performance criteria. Each cable design is appli-cation driven and our focus is to produce high quality products which are both safe and easy to install. Our ability to produce cables and connectors in-house not only makes us more responsive to the market but allows us to optimise the manufacturing process of end to end cable assemblies such as pigtails, patchcords or cable systems.

To compliment our LISA installation products, HUBER+SUHNER also has a wide portfolio of installer-friendly «plug and play» cable systems called MASTERLINE and SMARTLINE. These cables can be fully customised and offer high density pre-connectorised links bet-ween fiber optic panels or fiber optic panels and equipment racks. The benefit of such cable systems is the fact that installation times can be reduced by 75% with a substantial reduction also in the need for costly splicing and testing.

Within the FTTH market, such cable systems are often used to create simple links between splicing shelves and nearby patch panels. Such a design not only provides a safe demar-cation point in the network but also creates a structured system whereby large quantities of fibers can be spliced and presented to a convenient patch panel at the beginning of the network rollout.

HUBER+SUHNER has also developed many cable systems specifically for FTTH applica-tions and we realise that although flexibility is important, cost too is an important driver. To address this cost issue, HUBER+SUHNER has developed cables which focus on reducing installation times and OPEX. The X-press PATCH system for example allows installers to splice ruggedised pigtails directly into the ODR and run these protected pigtails out to equipment ports. This system is very fast to install and reduces much of the cost present in systems where pigtails are spliced onto fibers and then patchcords routed to equipment racks.

Street cabinets and closuresLISA street cabinets offer the same degree of flexibility and modularity available from our central office Optical Distribution Racks. Standard subracks and modules can be integrated in many different configurations so as to construct customer-specific solutions independent of chosen network topology. The overall construction of the cabinet can be adjusted either in size or material type so that environmental constraints such as wide temperature ranges can easily be accommo-dated without compromising performance.

A number of different connection methods can be incorporated into the cabinet such as splitter solutions for PON, wave guides for WDM-PON or high density P2P distribution and customer premises terminations. Optical closures or high IP rated boxes can also be integrated into our cabinet solutions offering a cost effective and installer friendly alternative to conventional fiber management modules. Such systems have shown increased demand due to the high environmental pro-tection offered by the internal closure and the convenience for installers who may remove the closure for splicing work in a weather proof canopy or vehicle.

Our closure range is extremely compact and we offer single circuit management solutions for customers preferring subscriber separation and multi-circuit options where faster instal-lations and lower OPEX costs are the key drivers.

We will source and partner with other industry leaders to achieve the best-fit product for our customers, and because we understand FTTH, we can advise customers on different application types such as aerial, buried, in-line and terminal types.

Our innovative cable entry solutions have been specifically designed for high volume customer drop applications allowing new customers to be added with the minimum of too-ling and installation time. This combination of product design and installation focus reflect our company motto of «less complexity more speed».

Splitters and WDM for PON networks

SplittersHUBER+SUHNER offers a wide range of power splitters for P2MP networks from 2 to 64 output fibers. Aimed at the classic PON environment, our splitters can be supplied as components only or as LISA modules. Our pre-terminated solutions offer the fastest installations and maximum flexibility in the field. This factory tested approach eliminates much of the signal loss created by pigtail splicing and the presentation to adapters offers customers a flexible and simple connec-tion method using standard patch cables.

For those customers wishing to eliminate unnecessary cable links, HUBER+SUHNER offers a «park and patch» system whereby protected pigtails exit the splitter module for tempora-ry parking and subsequent patching to nearby subscriber ports. This approach represents the simplest and fastest method for adding new subscribers to the network and is ideal for outside plant environments where conventional splicing is difficult.

WDM devicesTo compliment our high performance power splitters, HUBER+SUHNER also offers WDM devices for combining multiple optical signals. Such devices are generally placed in the outside plant environment and can be used to combine analogue TV and data trans-missions over a single fiber to the end user. Generally placed in the harsh outside plant environment, HUBER+SUHNER ensures the highest optical performance through robust packaging and the widest possible temperature ranges.

Recent advances in technology mean today that it is now economically feasible to mul-tiplex and de-multiplex light as many as 32 times over a single fiber between the central office and the customer access point. This new topology known as «WDM PON» looks set to revolutionise FTTH networks and HUBER+SUHNER is one of the first companies to produce dedicated solutions for this emerging market. Our experienced gained in high-density P2P networks means that we can easily accommodate the high fiber counts made possible by «next generation PON» topologies.

The flexibility of the LISA system means that «PON» solutions can be combined with P2P solutions in the same optical distribution frame if required, making it the perfect choice for hybrid FTTH networks.

POP solutionsFTTH is quite unique in the sense that incumbents are no longer the only companies capa-ble of delivering triple play services to the end users. Of course network owners still play an important role due to their existing infrastructure, but it's increasingly common to see operators, service providers and municipalities driving the demand for fiber optics.

This shift towards a more «open access» network has led to some problems in terms of how and where a competing company will locate their hardware so as to be accessible to the end user and cost effective for their business model. Renting office space is always an option however high rental rates and poor availability has reduced its popularity in recent years. The more common approach especially for municipalities is to design and construct purpose-made cabins for housing their passive and active equipment close to the end user. Such cabins or POPs (Point Of Presence) can be pre-equipped with all of the necessary hardware, air conditioning and security features and then delivered to site as a turn-key solution.

Such cabins are low-cost and flexible, however in order to avoid complex building regulations they are also very compact and restricted in terms of fiber density. Because of their small size, HUBER+SUHNER’s highest density LISA ODRs are the perfect product for POPs because they can be easily adjusted to suit the limited space whilst providing the highest amount of possible customer connections.

In addition HUBER+SUHNER will work with customers to design the perfect POP, combi-ning passive racks, active racks and fiber containment to optimise the performance and serviceability of the building. Drawings will be provided showing how HUBER+SUHNER’s products function in proximity to other equipment such as air conditioning, battery back-up and duct entry points. This control of all elements also helps HUBER+SUHNER to calculate exact cable distances within the POP resulting in a standardised cable length where possible and a more consistent installation.

Customer Premises

Flexible, multi-functional wall box

The LISA OptiBox is a compact, multi-functioning wall box designed to simplify the instal-lation and servicing of fiber optics inside or outside a customers premise. The ergonomic design of the OptiBox means that it is quick and easy to install whilst remaining sympa-thetic to the domestic environment in which it is placed. Available in different IP classifica-tions, the OptiBox can be upgraded so that optical performance is maintained even in the harshest environments.

Understanding that our customers require a scalable product with maximum flexibility, HUBER+SUHNER have developed the OptiBox to suit all network topologies and scenarios. In PON networks it can be used to house splitters or WDM devices and in P2P networks, a wide range of termination methods can be facilitated such a fusion splicing, blown-fiber and pre-termination.

As with all LISA products, the OptiBox includes features which reduce installation times yet maintain the highest level of bend-radius limitation and fiber protection. Snap-out adapter plates offer on-site configurations and cone-shaped cable entry components ensure that fibers are protected even when they are routed to the inside of a house through an external wall.

Flexible cable entry grommets allow the OptiBox to be installed quickly regardless of cable diameter, quantity or type, and gas-block connectors can be fixed to micro-ducts in blown-fiber applications. For those customers requiring «plug and play» simplicity, the pre-connectorised MASTERLINE QUICK system can be accommodated providing the fastest installation

In apartment buildings where there are a number of floors, the OptiBox can be used to terminate a selection of fibers from a riser cable and then allow the remaining fibers to feed-through to the next floor. This approach is facilitated by a knock-out in the upper area of the box and provides a cost-effective alternative to fusion splicing at every junc-tion point.
