ABC’s Shark Tank investor and fashion mogul Daymond John wowed a full house of 800 people at the Chamber’s 126th Annual Meeting on January 21, 2014—sharing through music, humor, and iconic style his personal story and five tips for swimming with the sharks.

After an invigorating video, Daymond took the stage accompanied by an upbeat musical interlude from his in-person D.J. who cranked the tunes throughout Daymond’s keynote presentation. He launched by joking about the Michigan artic cold and reminding the packed crowd that entrepreneurs are the life blood of America.

“We’re all born thinking like entrepreneurs, but unfortunately, we get chains and binders placed on us,” Daymond said, adding that we may have countless people who contributed to our successes but we can blame only one for our failures—namely, ourselves.

Amidst his all-American entrepreneurial story of hardwork, trial-and-error successes, and mistakes along the way, Daymond interwove his five key S.H.A.R.K. points:

Set a goal. You cannot hit a target you cannot see.

Homework. Do your research. Know your market, your industry, your business. Amore. You must do what you love! Don’t let business for the sake of business get in the way.

Remember you ARE the brand. Can you express your personal brand into 2-5 words?

Keep on swimming. The end of every race is the start of a new one, so keep going!

The standing ovation after his presentation was just one cue that attendees found renewed spirit. We had a lot of positive feedback in social media, including one GRACC follower who tweeted “TheSharkDaymond is giving one of the best speeches I’ve ever heard at the J.W. right now… the man is a legend and a business inspiration.” Sara Sherry, President of MixedMI LLC, a boutique staffing firm in Grand Rapids, tweeted that she: “Enjoyed the 126th Annual Meeting hosted by GRACC! Daymond John was very inspirational and motivated me as an entrepreneur!”

The Chamber extends appreciation for everyone who came to the Annual Meeting and our thanks to this year’s sponsors who helped make the event a success. As Jeff Connolly at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan noted, “We’re so proud to be a corporate supporter of one of the best chambers in the state.”Exclusive Presenting Sponsor Event Underwriters

Grand Rapids’ entrepreneurial Culture (continued from cover)

February 2014 | Issue Sponsor: Blue Cross Blue Shield Michigan

For Vander Vliet, being an entrepreneur means being the decision-maker, but that doesn’t mean she goes it alone. She readily points to the many available networking opportunities, community activities, and media outlets in Grand Rapids that have helped her business directly reach consumers as well as other area businesses. “It’s definitely a win-win for the economy here,” she said.

Recent research into Grand Rapids entrepreneurship supports Vander Vliet’s business experience. According to the most recent “Empowering Entrepreneurship” study commissioned by Grand Valley State University’s Seidman College of Business and Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the entrepreneurial environment in West Michigan has indeed made great strides forward.

“We are now embracing entrepreneurship as a goal. That wasn’t the case four years ago (in the 2009 study),” noted Paul Isely, Professor of Economics and one of the authors of the 2013 report who spoke to CBS Detroit last summer.

However, the numbers also showed that we still need to do a better job fostering a diverse population and an educated, creative talent pool as well as retaining young workers and attracting outside talent—areas many Chamber initiatives focus upon. A workforce that has more creative workers—such as architects and engineers—will be more likely to generate entrepreneurs, the report said. Similarly, education breeds entrepreneurial success and makes it easier to find the necessary talent for an entrepreneur to start a new venture.

On the positive side, the improving local culture favors entrepreneur-ship and that means access to more professionally controlled venture

capital. “West Michigan has made significant progress in developing structures and resources to support entrepreneurship,” Isley told the Grand Rapids Business Journal previously.

Venture capital is a critical step for many entrepreneurs who need pre-seed funds, startup capital, and growth funding in order to see their ideas and products come to fruition and be profitable in the marketplace. Yet, sometimes getting that capital can still be difficult—something Lori Baker, CPA and Owner of Baker Holtz, has observed and the GVSU study supported.

“Funding is an age-old problem for entrepreneurs, and it’s the area I see the most struggle,” Baker told the Chamber. “There are a lot of people with great ideas who have a hard time getting the capital they need as they are starting out or trying to grow.”

Baker said her accounting firm helps business owners who are currently re-evaluating their banking relationships and financing options. Luckily, she points out that there are many new ways of accessing funds besides traditional banking—local places like StartGarden (www.startgarden.org) and GROW (www.growbusiness.org) who help entrepreneurs with angel investments and microloans respectively. There are also online crowd funding opportunities from places like KickStarter (www.kickstarter.com) that can help get entrepreneurial ideas off the ground.

“Grand Rapids is an extremely good place for people interested in starting a business,” Baker added. “I think it’s so great because people are so helpful here.”

Each year, the Grand Rapids Area Chamber helps entrepreneurs grow their businesses by providing the confidence, connections, and resources they need. Over 80% of our 2,700 members operate companies with 50 or fewer employees. How can we help you?

Boost Business with ChAMBEr MEMBErShip CrEdiBilityA national survey of 2,000 adults recently revealed that businesses benefit from chamber of commerce membership because of a boost in credibility and consumer confidence.

The Schapiro Group, an Atlanta-based market research firm, found strong association between positive attitudes towards businesses and their membership in the local chamber. Even better, positive perceptions of chamber members have been increasing since the first study in 2007.

The study showed chamber membership translates into:• 73% increase in consumer awareness of a business – 78% increase in B2B awareness• 68% increase in local reputation among consumers – 65% increase in B2B reputation• 80% of consumers more likely to shop or buy there – 74% more likely to buy B2B

Additionally, a further breakdown of the data by industry found that Chamber membership improved credibility and positively impacted business outcomes across the board from restaurants to insurance to automobile sales.

A Global look At entrepreneurship By Cindy Droog

Perhaps no other industry is more reliant on the success of its people than direct selling—a $153 billion global industry comprised of more than 91 million salespeople. That’s why Amway, the world’s largest direct seller, recently sought to capture an up-to-date view on self-employment potential and obstacles hindering entrepreneurial activities in 24 countries: Australia, Austria, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States.

Now in its fifth year, the Amway Global Entrepreneurship study is advancing dialogue around American entrepre-neurship—a topic that’s always timely, but particularly in times of uncertainty.

Led by global research firm GfK and a second scientific partner, the Entrepreneurship Center at the University of Munich in Germany, the study gathered data from

among 26,000 global citizens in 24 countries. The study’s findings apply well above and beyond direct selling and have been presented at the United States Chamber of Commerce, Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, European Retail Conference, Polish Confederation of Private Employers Women’s Congress, Annual Conference on Remote Trade in Russia, and more.

Study results revealed:

70% hold positive attitudes towards entrepreneurship. Denmark leads this pack of positivity with 89 percent. And the numbers increase when age and education are thrown into the mix—showing 77 percent under the age of 30 and 82 percent holding a university degree see entrepreneurship as a good choice.

65% of Americans expressed the greatest need for independence. That’s 22 percent above the global average—a statistic that’s equally matched by our fearlessness of failure, which is also the strongest across the 24 countries.

46% consider their country’s environment to be entrepreneur-friendly. Again, the United States leads the pack here with 73 percent rating our country as very or rather friendly.

42% consider public funding and start-up loans as indispensable to their success. Entrepreneurship education and a network of support follow closely at 33 percent and 27 percent respectively.

The most appealing aspects to starting up a business are independence from an employer and being one’s own boss; self-fulfillment and realizing own ideas; and second income prospects.

Cindy Droog, APR, is a global public relations supervisor at Amway, a passionate advocate for entrepreneurship,

and a 2005 graduate of Leadership Grand Rapids (LGR).

“The report applies scientific thinking and analysis to three areas of what drives fear in would-be entrepreneurs: the social, psychological and financial realms,” said Amway Chairman and 2013-2014 U.S. Chamber of Commerce Chairman Steve Van Andel. “Because so much economic and personal growth stems from entrepreneurship, it’s important to us to have a deep understanding of what actions we can take to keep the entrepreneurial spirit healthy.”

The study reinforces a collective responsibility to engage in more public discussion on entrepreneurship and to ensure that decision-makers in the realm of politics, economics and education have real data to inform actions that encourage the foundation of new businesses.

Since its founding in 2006, MyWay Mobile Storage has successfully navigated through the recent economic downturn to emerge as the premier mobile storage and moving company in the area, according to Gary Schuler.

As co-owner of the Grand Rapids franchise market for MyWay Mobile Storage, Schuler and his partner Dale Plowman are just one of seven franchised operations stemming from the parent company that still bases operations and a national call center in Grand Rapids. Advantages of using MyWay Mobile Storage are plenty—including onsite drop off/pick up at a customer’s home or business locations and secure, climate controlled storage facilities.

“We make moving and storage more convenient and affordable for individuals or companies which need to move or store in the Grand Rapids area,” said Schuler. “Our unique service eliminates the need for moving truck rental or making multiple trips to a self-storage facility.”

MyWay Mobile Storage is now poised for future growth, although Schuler is clearly proud that the company continued to grow and add employees even during the economic downturn. “Building a business in the difficult times like we experienced the last six years sharpens your skills, value offering, and operations,” he said. “If you can stay in the game long enough, when you emerge from the ‘ ‘fog’ and the economy starts to gain momentum, you are that much better off to capitalize on the opportunities.”

A Chamber member since 2010, Schuler said MyWay Mobile Storage joined to support business growth within the city as well as capitalize upon the right connections and customers that enabled MyWay to grow. “I would encourage other companies to engage the Chamber and the resources early in their development and growth stage,” he noted. “We got caught up in ‘critical’ day-to-day operational issues and failed to see the really ‘important’ issues, like long-term growth through developing key business and community relationships.”

This year’s annual survey of more than 700 Chamber members shows the business environment is improving with West Michigan businesses experiencing growth over the last year.

With almost half of the responses from owners and employees of small businesses and another 30 percent coming from employees of large businesses, the Chamber survey revealed 77% of respondents said their firm hired and/or added new positions in the last 12 months.

Nearly 60 percent also noted that their firm had difficulty finding qualified applicants, and as a result, two-thirds with job growth reported their firm had to increase recruiting efforts in the last year. This is an issue the Chamber will be working to address in 2014.

“We are excited about the growth our members experienced in 2013,” said Rick Baker, President and CEO of the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce. “Last year’s survey showed that overall confidence in our state was growing among the business community, and these figures of job growth confirm that sentiment. We are encouraged to see this continue through 2014.”

While businesses are experiencing encouraging growth, the rising cost of health care and Federal spending continue to be members’

top concerns for the second year in a row.

“Our members continue to be concerned about the uncertainty in Washington and the impact rising costs of health care has on their business,” said Andy Johnston, Vice President of Government and Corporate Affairs. “We will continue to advocate on behalf of our members at the state and federal level to address these issues, and the talent and workforce development needs of West Michigan businesses.”

Other top issues that garnered support in the survey include: health care utilization and prevention, early childhood funding, state and local investment in infrastructure, and reducing onerous regulations and taxes.

A summary of the survey can be found at www.grandrapids.org/government-affairs.

What kind of leader do you want to be?

According to Bill Manns, President of Mercy Health Saint Mary’s, leader-ship is more than making decisions or having a title; it’s about bringing people together through relationships and “call and response” listening in order to solve problems and meet high expectations.

In August 2013, Manns returned to Michigan to serve in his new post at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s after building a successful turnaround as chief operating officer at the Alameda Health System in Oakland, California. Manns recently commented on his own path to leadership resulting from

his skill as a consensus builder and analytical problem solver, and he encouraged those who aspire to lead with his story and leadership insights.

A native of Detroit, Manns learned his early lessons in leadership as well as a strong foundation in character development from Father Richard Polakowski at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy:

• Say what you know.

• Say what you don’t know.

• Question what you believe.

• Label accordingly and examine fearlessly.

Manns also shared with the Chamber that he really took to heart the mantra “be a man for others” and learned to practice a “call and response” method of communication that has since enabled him to provide due diligence in the business world.

There is a need for leaders to question and reserve judgment, to listen actively and provide constructive feedback, Manns pointed out. He also noted the need for executives to have balance in their life—not to take work too seriously and to find ways to “learn to chill.” For him, that means tinkering with his collection of nine cars and keeping up an active social life with his wife and 13-year-old son. He also believes that you have to take the time to personally invest and give back to the community.

“I could work 24 hours a day, and the job would allow for that with all that needs to be done,” Manns said. “But then I don’t smile as much and people notice. I get irritable when tired and stressed from overwork…and that affects my effectiveness as a leader.”

For Manns, leading is like being the coach of a team—harkening back to his youthful days playing basketball. “Think about it,” he said. “When is the last time you saw a coach hit a last second winning shot?” According to Manns, it’s not the leader’s job to make the shot, but it is his/her job to prepare the team and draw out excellence.

This information is taken from Bill Manns’ presentation, titled “Journey to Leadership & Lessons Learned,” as shared at the Chamber’s Business Matters Series in January 2014.

PAID GRAND RAPIDS, MI

This unique Chamber series provides members and their employees the opportunity to network, advance relationships with Michigan legislators, and to voice opinions on the key issues in Lansing.

Our facilitated question and answer sessions offer a chance for candid conversation and a direct channel to voice opinions on issues moving forward in Lansing. It’s your chance to learn about the legislative process, share your voice directly with elected officials, and establish relationships with key people in the legislature and the Grand Rapids business community.

In 2013, we met with an average of nine legislators each month to discuss policy issues and to advocate for specific issues such as transportation funding, reforms that support student learning, and streamlining regulation and licensing in Michigan.

We know the value of a strong Chamber of Commerce comes from having a collective voice that speaks on behalf of small business. What will you add to the conversation? Join us and find out!
