Chamber works with Franz Bakery to keep outlet in town through 2013

Thanks to the community’s reaction to news that it would be closing its doors on February

9, the Franz Bakery outlet store in Tillamook will stick around at least through the end of 2013. After seeing the response from the community and looking at all options, we decided to give it a good window of time to see if we could turn things around and be a positive for all,” said Steve Bradbury, vice president and general manager of the Franz Oregon division. Franz had opted to close the store after the outlet store had taken a financial hit related to ongoing construction on Third Street. Romy Carver, an employee at the Women’s Resource Center in Tillamook, lead a grassroots campaign to convince Franz to keep the outlet store’s doors open. Meanwhile, Tillamook Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Justin Aufdermauer met with Bradbury to help convince the

company to stay in town. “Justin reached out to us to have a face-to-face meeting,” said Bradbury. “We felt the effort was going to be there on the Chamber’s part to support keeping the store open.” To determine whether to keep the store open beyond 2013, “we will do the same expense-to-sales analysis we always do,” said Bradbury. “It will basically be the same as anyone’s individual finances – does the income meet the demands of the cost? With that said, our goal with this endeavor is to try to keep the store open, and we will work hard with the community to make that happen. “We did appreciate the communication from the community, the Chamber and the newspaper (Tillamook Headlight Herald) there. Everyone we talked to was very respectful with their input and opinions.” The Tillamook store, which opened its doors in the fall of 1980, is one of three Franz Bakery outlet stores on

the Oregon coast, with the other two located in Newport and Astoria. The Chamber organized a Cash Mob at the store in January.

During the Tillamook Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet, held January 19, Board President Jennifer Purcell offered a recap of 2012.

Purcell thanked outgoing board members David Lindstrom and Samantha Swindler and recognized Chamber Executive Director Justin Aufdermauer for his “tireless efforts” on behalf of the Chamber. “His creativity, coupled with a passion for the people and places of Tillamook County, have taken the Chamber into a new chapter,” she said. Reminding those attending the banquet that the Chamber’s mission is to promote tourism, business and economic development in the Tillamook area, she said, “as the Board of Directors guides the Chamber in achieving its strategic plan, we seek to be an organization that is accessible, relevant, creative, and responsive to the needs of its membership and the community.” Purcell said that the Chamber became even more valuable to its membership in 2012 as a result of implementing a number of projects, programs, and partnerships, including Aufdermauer’s election to the Oregon State Chamber Board of Directors, the annual Tillamook Bay Run showing an increase in runners from 125 to 189, revamped newsletter and website (both a result of hiring local creative firms), landscaping improvements to the Visitors Center, publication of a member benefits publication, and launch of the Tillamook Cash Mob. She reviewed a number of free training seminars and courses the Chamber either conducted or helped to facilitate, including Facebook Basics for Small Businesses, the local Business Symposium Series (held in partnership with Worksource Oregon and the Oregon Employers Council), and Building Your Killer Business Plan (held in partnership with OSU and a number of local agencies). Other highlights in 2012 included the Chamber’s

2012 Visitors Guide, copies of which were distributed in visitors centers from Astoria to Brookings, and from Roseburg to Pioneer Square, the Tillamook apparel line, which was launched at the Tillamook County Fair, the revamped Chamber website (www.gotillamook.com), and a GoTillamook Facebook page. Purcell thanked the City of Tillamook for entrusting the Chamber to use a portion of its transient room tax funding to promote area tourism. She introduced the 2013 Chamber Board of Directors: Whitey Forsman (vice president), Connie Green (secretary), Gordon Plotts, Dan Leuthold, Kelley Cook, Sam McRae, and Courtney Crist, noting “several new Board members bring fresh perspective, creative ideas, and a renewed commitment to serving our membership and our community in the coming year.” Purcell is the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality’s North Coast Regional Solutions Liaison. Prior to stepping into that role last year, whe was Tillamook County Sollid Waste coordinator for four years. In addition to serving as Chamber Board president, she is a member of the Tiillamook County Futures Council Board and the Tillamook County Parks Advisory Committee.

On January 25, the Tillamook Cash Mob descended on the

Tillamook Air Museum. Nine Cash Mobbers spent $161 during the event, which was the latest in a series of ongoing Cash Mobs organized by the Tillamook Area Chamber of Commerce. Cash Mobs are held throughout the country to help small businesses survive during tough times. The Chamber launched the local Cash Mob program to give

Tillamook County businesses a financial boost. The program has been so successful, it inspired others to organize regular Cash Mobs in north Tillamook County and Astoria, in neigbhoring Clatsop County. The Tillamook Area Chamber of Commerce recently launched a Lunch Mob program as well. The next Lunch Mob is scheduled for 11 a.m.-1 p.m., February 12. Visit www.gotillamook.com to learn more.

Garibaldi has seen a leadership renaissance in recent years that has

lead to a number of visioning efforts that are looking to revitalize Tillamook County’s working waterfront. We still have a ways to go, but there are a number of local efforts being made to diversify economic development opportunities in this unique corner of Tillamook Bay. The City created a Downtown Vision Plan in 2008 and adopted waterfront zoning this year that will allow for more diverse development. A significant capital project this summer also added sidewalks to encourage safer pedestrian access along Garibaldi Ave. (US101) between Ninth and Twelfth Streets. The Garibaldi Urban Renewal Agency (GURA) has also made downtown improvements primarily at Fourth Street. With a look into the future, these phased-in projects along Garibaldi Ave. include underground electrical conduit so that once the downtown core has been re-built, the majority of the power lines can be pulled underground. The Port of Garibaldi has been focusing on the

reconstruction of the Commercial Ave. wharf, the historic hub of commercial fishing in Tillamook County. This wharf has seen better days and once re-built will be able to support three 10,000 square-foot, multi-use buildings for seafood buying, boutique processing, food production and a farmer’s market complete, with locally caught seafood, meats and vegetables. One idea has been to include a viewing tower that would allow spectacular views

of Tillamook Bay. The Port will be looking to undertake a longer-term vision of the district’s property to fully market the waterfront development potential. In 2010, the City formed the Garibaldi Tourism Commission. The GTC looks to establish Garibaldi as the over-night anchor point for exploring Oregon’s authentic

fishing village, as well as the attractions and natural scenic areas of Tillamook County and the North Oregon Coast. The GTC has worked with Tillamook County Economic Development to create the now-annual Tourism Symposium to fully explore opportunities for tourism and recreation to add value to the County’s economic development portfolio. Fishing continues to be strong in Garibaldi with a long waiting list of commercial and recreational boaters looking for moorage. Though the crab industry has been set back this year, the last two years have been record-setters. We also have significant landings of tuna, rockfish and salmon. Tillamook Bay is the number one producer of commercial harvested clams in Oregon and the oyster production is right up there as well. Coupled with an increased interest by kayakers, birdwatchers, train aficionados and other naturalists, Garibaldi is uniquely positioned by its geography and diverse natural resources to raise the bar on development while being sensitive to its cultural roots. A month doesn’t go by when a tourist or visitor doesn’t stop to tell me that Garibaldi is a diamond in the rough. We do have a ways to go but with ample water and wastewater capacity, loosened waterfront zoning, room for growth and rehabilitated infrastructure in place, Garibaldi has an extremely bright future.

Let me start off my February Newsletter Report with great big

congratulations to the Chamber Staff and Board for a most excellent Annual Banquet. The place was packed to overflowing. The food was all from local restaurants and was outstanding! I’m sure glad I was not on the selection committee for the annual awards. There were some excellent candidates to choose from. Well done, to the Blue Heron for Business of the Year, Tillamook Meats for Small Business of the Year, Farm Power for Development Project of the Year and Ken Fallon for Business Person of the Year. A special welcome to Goodwill. I was at the ribbon cutting at 7:00 AM and I swear there 200 people standing in the very cold air waiting to get in. I understand 27 locals were hired. Thanks, Goodwill. Our roads continue to decline and the Headlight Herald put it well when they said we are on a Road to Ruin announcing the closure of the Cape

Meares Loop Road. We just don’t have the dollars or staff to constantly maintain this slide area until it dries out and we can get back in there and try and

find a fix to this continuing problem. On the same subject, I understand the Sustainable Roads Committee has completed their three public

meetings in North, Central and South County and will be coming before the Commissioners in early February with a proposal for the May election. Our roads continue to head toward ruin and I believe we will not see the feds or the state coming in on a white money horse to give us dollars given the state of the federal and state budget Senator Johnson recently came to the county with the new State Lands Director in tow. Mary Abrams toured the county and met folks who work very closely with State Lands regulators. In conjunction with the Soil and Water Conservation District, we are inviting her staff back to meet with more locals to get into the details of some the important matters regarding our farm lands, roads and waterways. Mark your calendar for Feb. 13th. Your Chamber will be hosting the first of several Legislative phone

conference calls with our Legislators. Be at the Chamber at 7:00 AM for coffee if you want to find out what’s going on at the Legislature and ask specific questions of our representatives. Why so early you ask? Well, they start legislative hearings at 8:30 AM and if we want to get any of their valuable time, this is when they have the time available to talk to us. Boy, we sure got a good nationwide plug when the Travel Channel aired a segment on the Tillamook County Fair and the Pig n Ford Races. I was very impressed about how much air time they gave the races and I believe it made us all look pretty good. Well done Pig n Ford Association! Mark Labhart is a Tillamook County commissioner.
