Welcome

It’s easy to register. All you need to do is call786-596-8748 weekdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., [email protected] or log on tobaptisthealth.net/childbirth for a class schedule andto register online.

We recommend that you register as early as possible during your pregnancy. Class size is limitedand enrollment is accepted on a space-available basis.

PreadmissionWhen it’s time to have your baby, paperwork

will be the last thing on your mind. Baptist Hospitalhas a preadmission packet containing all you’ll needto arrange for your maternity stay. You can obtainthis packet from your doctor or by calling thematernity preadmitting coordinator at 786-596-5959.The packet is also available online at baptisthealth.net/childbirth. Please read the materialcarefully, complete all forms and mail them, alongwith a copy of your insurance card, to our maternitypreadmitting office. It’s best to register as early aspossible during your pregnancy.

Know your health planHealth insurance plans are not alike, so it’s

important that you understand what your healthplan covers before you are ready to deliver. Mosthealth insurance plans require a written request forchange of coverage within 30 days of your child’sbirth. If you don’t enroll your newborn according toyour insurance company’s policy, you will likelyhave to wait until the next open enrollment periodof your health plan to get coverage for your child. We urge you to contact your employer or healthinsurance company as soon as possible to ensurethat your newborn is covered.

Selecting a pediatricianIn the excitement of pregnancy, some

parents forget a very important task: choosing apediatrician for their baby. You can get referralsfrom friends and family, your health insurance planor your obstetrician. Or, you can call the BaptistHealth Physician Referral Service at 786-596-6557.(Outside Miami-Dade County, call toll-free 1-800-228-6557.) We also offer our referral serviceonline at baptisthealth.net.

Education helps ensure Healthy BeginningsSince it’s likely you will stay in the hospital

only a short time after the birth of your baby, you’llhave little time to ask all the questions you mighthave about your infant’s care. Because of this, weencourage you to learn in advance all you can aboutcaring for your baby.

Our Healthy Beginnings program for expectantparents offers a full range of classes and a wealth ofknowledge that will ease your journey to parent-hood, or, for experienced parents, refresh yourmemory. Certified childbirth educators provide asupportive learning environment and feature topicson childbirth preparation, breast-feeding, newbornparenting, epidural anesthesia, Cesarean births andCPR. You can even participate in our online child-birth education program in the comfort of your ownhome. Detailed information about these classes andprograms, along with their fees, can be found in thePrograms for Expectant Parents brochure. We alsooffer a video tour of the Family Birth Place at baptisthealth.net/childbirth.

When it’s time to be admitted Your doctor will discuss with you when to

come to the hospital. Please go to the Family BirthPlace (not the Emergency Center). The comforts of homeOur private birthing suites were designed to

create a relaxed atmosphere with minimal disruptionsfor your baby’s birth. Yet, despite the homelike setting, our qualified physicians, specially trainednurses and technologically advanced equipment willprovide you and your baby with the highest qualityobstetrical care. Each suite also has a separate sleeperso that an adult support partner can spend the night. You will be taken to a conventional delivery roomonly if complications arise or you are scheduled for a C-section.

Labor and deliveryDuring labor and delivery, our nurses will assist

you in every way possible. They will keep youinformed of your progress and administer any medications ordered by your doctor. Three familymembers or friends are allowed to stay with you inthe birthing suite (this includes the father or adultsupport partner). If you have a C-section withepidural anesthesia, only one person (the father oradult support partner) is permitted in the area bothduring and after the baby’s birth. Family and friendsmay be asked to leave at any time, depending onmedical circumstances. During labor and delivery, all other family members and friends will be askedto remain in the waiting area.

After the baby’s birth, you’ll be able to spend ashort time with your newborn before the baby isadmitted to the nursery. There, your baby’s heartrate, temperature and other important indicators of anewborn’s health and well-being will be monitoredfor a few hours. The father or adult support partnermay visit with the baby in the nursery at the discre-tion of the charge nurse.

You’ll be taken to a private room where youand your infant will be cared for together. By having your baby with you throughout your stay, you’ll get to know his or her patterns and prefer-ences. Since some babies tend to sleep a lot the firstfew days, it’s the perfect time for parents to learnabout their newborn and ask questions. Your nursewill answer those questions and offer guidance sothat once you’re home, you’ll feel more confidentabout taking care of your newborn.

Grandparents and siblings are also encouragedto get acquainted with the newborn at this time. However, we ask that you limit visitors to the fatheror adult support partner and four guests.

Progressive Care Unit (PCU)This unit has been designed to accommodate

mothers who are in need of frequent monitoring. Those with preeclampsia will remain in the unit forapproximately 24 hours after delivery. Your babywill be brought to you for a visit at the nurse’s discretion. During that time, family assistance isencouraged for the care of the baby. After your doctor approves of a transfer, you will be taken to amother/baby room for two or three more days. Yourbaby will remain with you in this room until youare both discharged to go home.

Family and friends visitationA phone is located in the waiting area so that

family and friends can call your room or the nurses’station for updates during labor and delivery. Sincespace is limited in the waiting area, we suggest thatmost family and friends stay at home until after thebaby’s birth.

Your family and friends will want to meet yourbaby as soon as possible; however, during these firstfew days with your baby, it’s important to spend some
