2. NOVEMEBER 13 PARIS ATTACKS

On the evening of 13 November 2015, a series of coordinated terrorist attacks occurred in Paris, the capital of France, and its northern suburb, Saint-Denis. 129 people died in the attacks.

3. SYRIAN CIVIL WAR & REFUGEE CRISIS

4. NEPAL EARTHQUAKE

The April 2015 Nepal earthquake (i.e., the Gorkha earthquake) killed 9,000+ people and injured more than 23,000. The earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing at least 19, making April 25, 2015 the deadliest day on the mountain in history.

5. GREEK DEBT CRISIS

After five years of bailouts, budget battles and a battered economy, Greece was on the brink of becoming the first country to leave the euro zone in the summer of 2015. Everyone watched in horror as the first democratic country in history was struggling to get rid of its debt and make payments.

6. MARRIAGE EQUALITY

In a landmark decision, a divided Supreme Court in June, 2015 ruled that same-sex couples can marry nationwide, establishing a new civil right and handing gay rights advocates a historic victory.

8. Charlie Hebdo Shooting

On 7 January 2015, two brothers, Saïd and Chérif Kouachi, forced their way into the offices of the French satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris. Armed with assault rifles and other weapons, they killed 11 people and injured 11 others.

9. BALTIMORE PROTESTS

The day Baltimore planned to lay Freddie Gray to rest, the city went up in smoke. Riots have broken out throughout Baltimore less than three weeks after a 25-year-old man died in police custody.

10. CHARLESTON SHOOTING & FLAG DEBATE

The Charleston church shooting was a mass shooting that took place at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, on the evening of June 17, 2015. During a prayer service, nine people were killed by a gunman, including the senior pastor.
