Behind the Words

Annie Gilbert

This latest version of Ulysses Québec City was updated by Annie Gilbert. A longtime former Québec City resident who returns there frequently, Annie is the perfect guide for your tour of the capital of Québec.

Following her studies in tourism, Annie joined the Ulysses team, where she has held several different positions. She start-ed as a bookstore worker before joining the editorial team, where her in-depth know-ledge has been invaluable in preparing our guidebooks.

Born in the Abitibi region, she is equally at home fishing on a tranquil lake or shopping in a trendy boutique in Paris, New York, or London.

Annie has contributed to several Ulysses guides including Boston, Croisières dans les Caraïbes, Hawaii, and On va où aujourd’hui?

Whether you wish to enjoy a gourmet meal, experiment with creative international cuisine, grab a light healthy snack or simply savour an espresso, your only difficulty will in be choosing among Québec

City’s great selection of romantic restaurants and charming cafés.

This chapter recommends the best places to eat. The selections were made with all budgets and tastes in mind. For the very best, look for the Ulysses label to find our favourite res-taurants.

Although you may have learned differently in your French classes, Quebecers refer to breakfast as déjeuner, lunch as dîner and dinner as souper. Many restaurants offer a “daily special” (called spécial du jour), a complete meal for one flat price, which is usually less expensive than ordering à la carte. Served only at lunch, it usually includes a choice of appetizers and main dishes, plus coffee and dessert. In the evenings, a table d’hôte (same idea, but more substantial and slightly more expensive) is also an attractive option.

Reservations are prudent and in some cases essential. If you are travelling by car to Vieux-Québec, check with the restaurant to see if they offer valet service when you make reser-vations. This will save you a lot of trouble. If they do not provide this service, you should try to find an indoor parking garage. They are usually easy to locate.

h Prices and SymbolsPrices in this guide are for a meal for one person, excluding taxes and tip.

$ less than $15$$ from $15 to $25$$$ from $26 to $50$$$$ more than $50

To find out more about the Ulysses label ù, see p. ***.

h Bring Your Own WineMany restaurants here allow you to bring your own bottle of wine, a practice that often seems unusual to visitors. This tradition stems from the fact that, in order to serve alcohol, an establishment must purchase a rather expensive liquor licence. Consequently, restaurant owners who wish to offer their clientele a more economical solution prefer a licence that allows customers to bring their own wine. In most cases, a sign in the restaurant window indicates whether alcohol has to be purchased on the premises or if you can bring your own (apportez votre vin). This guide identifies restaurants that allow customers to bring their own wine with the symbol V. A complete list of bring-your-own-wine restaurants is included in the index at the end of this chapter (see p. 20).

h Index by Type of CuisineTo choose a restaurant according to its specialty, please refer to the index on page 20. An alphabetical list of all restaurants can be found in the index at the end of the guide, under “Restaurants.”

with a simple decor. The innovative dishes are a feast for the senses. In the basement of the inn is another small restaurant, the charming Bistro-Bar, which offers the same menu and prices as upstairs. Equipped with a fireplace, it is a cozy spot for après-ski, and is open in the evening for drinks.

Île d’Orléans

Sainte-PétronilleCafé Resto Chocolaterie de l’Île d’Orléans$-$$150 Chemin du Bout-de-l’Île, 418-828-0382This little place has a chocolate shop and ice cream parlour. On the ground floor, the res-taurant becomes a pasta bar in the evening. Attractive, unpretentious ambiance and an inviting terrace.

ùPanache Mobile $-$$Vignoble Sainte-Pétronille, 1-A Chemin du Bout-de-l’ÎleLittle brother to Auberge Sainte-Antoine’s Panache restaurant (see p. 9) in Québec City, Le Panache Mobile is much more than your average chip wagon. It’s a deluxe lunch counter that serves customers from May to October on the terrace of Vignoble Sainte-Pétronille. You can enjoy a guedille au homard (a local variation on the lobster roll) or bison hamburger while admiring the vineyard and the beautiful countryside. Accompany it with a glass or bottle of wine from the winery boutique. Open summer lunchtimes only.

The food is well presented and varied. On sunny days you can sit on the terrace, which has a view of the waterfalls beside the mill.

Unusual ingredients are also on offer, such as birch syrup and smoked sturgeon from the last traditional fisherman on Île d’Orléans. This poultry farm teaches its guests about eco-logical agriculture and the health benefits of goose grease; you can also see the animals and buy delicious products made on site, such as goose rillettes and duck breasts pre-pared various ways. Reservations required.

Saint-Pierre-de-l’Île-d’OrléansLe Vieux-Presbytère $$$$1247 Avenue Monseigneur-d’Esgly, 418-828-9723The dining room in Auberge Le Vieux-Presbytère (see p. ***) specializes in unusual meats such as ostrich, guinea fowl and espe-cially caribou.
