    FOUR (4) BODY STRUCTURES ARE

INVOLVED IN THE PHYSIOLOGY OFTHE MENSTRUAL CYCLE

    1.) HYPOTHALAMUS

    2.) PITUITARY GLAND

    3.) OVARIES

    4.) UTERUS

    HYPOTHALAMUS

-A part of the diencephalon of

    the brain.

--It activates, controls, andintegrates the peripheral

    autonomic nervous system,

    and many somatic functions

    such as the body temperature,

    sleep, and appetite.

    16/36

    PITUITARY GLAND

  • 8/3/2019 Every Woman is You

    17/36

The pituitary gland is a pea-sized gland

located at the base of the skull between theoptic nerves. The pituitary gland secretes

    hormones. Hormones are chemicals that

travel through our blood stream. The

pituitary is sometimes referred to as the

"master gland" as it controls hormone

functions such as our temperature, thyroid

activity, growth during childhood, urineproduction, testosterone production in

    males and ovulation and estrogen

    production in females.

  • 8/3/2019 Every Woman is You

    18/36

In effect the gland functions as

    our thermostat that controls all

    other glands that are

responsible for hormonesecretion. The gland is a critical

part of our ability to respond to

the environment most oftenwithout our knowledge.

    OVARIES

    The ovary is an ovum-

producing reproductive organ, often found in pairs as part of

    thevertebrate female reproducti

    ve system.

    UTERUS

    The reproductive function of

the uterus is to accept afertilized ovum which passes

    through the utero-tubal

    junction from the fallopiantube.

    LUTEINIZING HORMONE (LNRH)

    In Females, working

    together with follicle-stimulating hormone,

    stimulates the growing

follicle in the ovary tosecrete estrogen.

ESTROGENEstrogen is an important hormone for both men

and women, though it plays a more important

role in females. Estrogen is supplied by

primarily the ovaries in women, and in smallamounts in the testes of men.

Estrogen is also an important part of keeping the bones

healthy, especially in women. According to the Mayo

Clinic, as menopause occurs and estrogen levels

decrease, women have a much greater chance of

developing bone diseases such as osteoporosis. To

combat this, many menopausal women choose to have

    hormone replacement therapy.

    PROGESTERONE

Progesterone is a hormone that stimulates

and regulates important functions, playinga role in maintaining pregnancy, preparing

the body for conception and regulating the

    monthly menstrual cycle.

  • 8/3/2019 Every Woman is You

    26/36

The Role of Progesterone in Women

    - One of progesterone's most important

functions is to cause the endometrium to

secrete special proteins during the second

half of the menstrual cycle, preparing it toreceive and nourish an implanted fertilized

egg. If implantation does not occur, estrogen

and progesterone levels drop, theendometrium breaks down and

    menstruation occurs.

  • 8/3/2019 Every Woman is You

    27/36

If a pregnancy occurs, progesterone is

produced in the placenta, and levelsremain elevated throughout the

    pregnancy. The combination of high

estrogen and progesterone levelssuppress further ovulation during

    pregnancy. Progesterone also

    encourages the growth of milk-

producing glands in the breast duringpregnancy.

  • 8/3/2019 Every Woman is You

    28/36

    High progesterone levels are

believed to be partly responsible forsymptoms of premenstrual

    syndrome (PMS), such as breast

tenderness, feeling bloated andmood swings. When you skip a

period, it could be because of

    failure to ovulate and subsequent

    low progesterone levels.
