2017 was an incredibly productive year for us here at the Coalition. We spent a lot of time evaluating our services, what drives our work, and the impact we have for those we serve.

As we look forward to 2018, we have high aspirations of continuing to grow and build innovative programs that help us further our impact, methods, and vision. Our family of websites has been updated with a new engaging and mobile responsive design, and we will be creating an all new site—No Matter What: Stories of Resilience for Foster & Adoptive Families. Additionally, our team will be growing, with the addition of Journey Partners—moms and dads with lived foster care and adoption experience, who will serve as peer mentors to other parents.

We thank you for your continued support and look forward to what more we can do, together, for Wisconsin’s children, youth, and families.

Oriana Carey Dennis Krakau Chief Executive Officer President of the Board

THEORY OF CHANGEA special task force made up of board members, staff members, and key stakeholders, spent several days engaging in the work of creating the Coalition’s Theory of Change. Working with Katie Pritchard from Data You Can Use, this team was looking to uncover the true impact of the Coalition’s work.

“No matter what” families are flexible, practice acceptance, celebrate each victory,

and endure lifelong.

BRAND MESSAGINGFor an organization such as the Coalition, explaining what we do can sometimes be a complex process. A work group of key staff members, dedicated supporters, and board members spent time exploring the topic of brand messaging with Doug Diefenbach of Diefenbach Communications Strategies. We could all agree that the Coalition exists because, first, there are too many children and youth waiting for stable and nurturing connections, and, second, we need more families who persevere and persist no matter what. Simply put, the Coalition exists because:

Every child needs a champion. Every champion needs support.

Our unique role is to advocate for the children most in need of connection,

to coach foster and adoptive families to achieve resilience, and to lead

the viability and success of Wisconsin’s foster care and adoption ecosystem.

Within this report, you will see and read more about how the work we do every

day embodies these roles.

Created a series of brief videos with

Green Bay Packer Ty Montgomery and his

mom, Lisa, a foster parent. The video

series, Montgomery Moments, highlights

key reasons to consider becoming

a foster parent.

ADVOCATING FOR THE CHILDREN MOST IN NEED OF CONNECTIONSThe Coalition specializes in understanding the needs of those kids most in need of a supportive home environment. We take an innovative approach to inspiring more Wisconsin families to consider foster care and adoption by using billboards, social media campaigns, and memorable public service announcements. For those children in foster care and available for adoption, our strengths-based descriptions, engaging photographs, and personal videos bring to life their true personalities.

Responded to over 18,000 families seeking information about “becoming foster or adoptive families”

Provided support to the Wisconsin Youth Advisory Council for their first annual advocacy event, Hands Around the Capitol

Engaged 42 Wisconsin counties and 99 foster parents in a specialized targeted foster care recruitment training initiative

Provided training opportunities and conferences to over 900 foster and adoptive parents on a variety of topics designed to strengthen their knowledge of parenting their children

- 96% of participants left feeling as though the training they attended increased their knowledge

7

The variety of trainings available at the Coalition is simply unbeatable.

COACHING FOSTER AND ADOPTIVE FAMILIES TO ACHIEVE RESILIENCEWhen a family is feeling overwhelmed, they need to know that there is a compassionate, responsive, and safe place for them to turn – and that place is the Coalition.

Supported 28,126 families who contacted us via telephone, email, online, or social media - 75% of families served say that the Coalition has helped them build their networks of support

Hosted three “Parent Talk” events, giving over 50 adoptive parents the chance to meet, connect, and talk with others who have had similar experiences

- After these events, 80% of the participants shared that they felt more confident in their role as an adoptive parent

Hosted a “Mom to Mom” dinner for 20 adoptive mothers all parenting children of color. Participants spent an evening talking openly about the challenges they and their children face, race and parenting, and raising strong black children

I’m so glad I called today. Thank you so much for the information and resources!

LEADING THE VIABILITY AND SUCCESS OF WISCONSIN’S FOSTER & ADOPTION ECOSYSTEMFrom children, families, and caseworkers, to agencies, advocates, and policymakers, there are a lot of people and parties involved with the foster care and adoption ecosystem. While all of those involved work for what is in the best interest of the child, it is also true that each party has their own needs, as well. The Coalition helps to balance the needs and interests of all those involved.

Cultivated 192 resources such as informational articles (tip sheets), newsletters, training opportunities, and family networking events

Updated our family of websites to give them a fresh, streamlined, mobile responsive look

Provided testimony for the Speaker’s Task Force on Foster Care, which ultimately resulted in the Foster Forward package of legislation

90% of families feel that the Coalition has equipped them with the tools and resources that they need to build, grow, and sustain their families

I’m so grateful to know there is a resource like you out there for all families. I am going to share what an amazing and helpful organization you are!

Each year, the Coalition hosts two fundraising events—our Golf Outing and Gala. While the goal is always to raise funds to support the mission of our organization, we hope our guests and participants also have a wonderful time while doing so!

The 9th annual golf outing was held in June and was a day filled with laughter, raffles, and fun. 76 golfers joined us at The Bull at Pinehurst Farms in Sheboygan Falls. They, along with our dedicated board, staff, sponsors, and supporters, helped raise $44,000 for the Coalition.

Our 22nd annual gala, Family . . . A Harmonious Symphony, was held in November. Nearly 300 guests helped us honor The Family Blend Band, an adoptive family that makes beautiful music together, Graphicolor Printing, a local company that has generously supported the Coalition for over 10 years, and Jameelah Love, a former youth in care who now advocates for positive reform in the foster care system. The evening included raffles, auctions, a giving appeal, and more. All told, this celebration of family brought in $104,000 for the programs, services, and work of the Coalition.
