Evaluation 2- How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

By Georgia Seth

Within both the DigiPak and the Magazine advert we were instructed to create, we felt that we needed to portray the artist in such a way which drew our target audience in and to produce an uproar into the single and album we were promoting. To do so, we ensured we used bright colours, vibrant effects and a range of locations within our Digipak in particular to promote this up-beat, fun image of the artist.

We used the idea of the title of the song, ‘Extraordinary’ to reflect this image with a wide range of shots, angles and filters to create this particular portrayal.

In making the magazine advert, we ensured this was a basic, yet effective reflection of the artist as we felt we could promote the artist as being an ‘ordinary’ young adult as this could connect with our target audience as these would be similar to the artist.

The Purpose of the Ancillary Tasks

DigiPak

In creating one of our ancillary tasks, being the Digipak we needed to fulfil, we ensured that this portrayed a wide range of shots and angles to reflect the artists personality and way of life, being ‘Extraordinary’. The intended effect we were aiming to create whilst making the Digipak was a cool, fun and urban vibe.

Analysis of individual images

The first image which we created was an a ‘selfie’ which the artist took, as we felt this was a cool, contemporary style. We have chosen to reflect upon within our Digipak. The rapid increase of the word ‘selfie’ within social networking sites in particular is why we chose to use the ‘selfie’ image and we also felt this would be a modern reflection of media in society today.

The second image we created was a contrasting image using a black and white filter in which reflected a sense of her dull, ordinary life which she lives on a daily basis. However, the highlighted red ribbon was used to contrast this ‘normal’ life and reflect a ‘extraordinary’ lifestyle.

The third image which we created was simply a pair of white block heels which we used to put across a star image as this reflects a classy, hip and modern vibe of the artist herself. I used a vibrant filter named ‘Avenue’ to highlight the vibrancy of the artists lifestyle which she with holds.

Analysis of individual images 2

The fourth image we created was a simple hair shot from behind with the artists hands featured within it. The shot was created for the sort of image it is in itself which is simplistic and feminine. We did this in order to reflect her image as a feminine, cool artist.

The fifth image we created was the actual front cover of the Digipak itself as we felt this came out the clearest and the black and white filter emphasised her dull lifestyle but also contrasted with the bright pink writing. A contrast with the artists happy nature within the photo and the black and white filter looked appealing and is why we chose to create this reflection.

The sixth image we created was based on the idea of portraying a modern, contemporary version of a picture to add to the Digipak. This was done by taking a picture of the artist taking a ‘selfie’ herself and was similar to the first image we created to fit in with the technological advances of the media world. The filter was also used to reflect a range of feelings/emotions of the developed personality of the artist herself.

Magazine AdvertWe used pink and black writing to create a stylish yet basic look for the magazine advert as we felt that keeping it simple would look more appealing.

The simplistic aspect to the magazine advert is reflected through the research we endured pre-making the music video, magazine advert and Digipak.

We also decided to use a vibrant, bright filter to enhance the colours of the artists pieces of clothing as this adheres to the conventions of a pop/dance music genre.

The five star rating was also used for the magazine to look realistic as many adverts we researched included this convention.

The Universal logo was also used for realism purposes and to make the advert look professional.

Branding is a key way in which we can create images and reflections of what the music video, magazine advert and Digipak is all about. In regards to how they link together, we used a range of costumes with a basic idea of make-up to establish a fun pact, entertaining and contemporary image. With the several changes of clothing we used, this was done to reflect the artists up-beat, fast-paced ‘extraordinary’ life along with a range of interesting and exciting locations to add to her action-filled life. The lyrics along with the costumes, locations and the artists general star-image all fitted in with the conventions of a typical pop/dance genre of music video as we explored through our research and planning beforehand.
