Welcome to my portfolio.

This portfolio documents a selection of work from my undergraduate at DeMontfort University, where I graduated in 2010, through to my professional experience. I have been very lucky to have a varied experience, both working in London and Melbourne and have enjoyed my time in both locations.

Throughout the portfolio endeavours to show a clear progression from student to working graduate and I am passionate to continue this improvement. There is a selection from academic and professional experience, along with competition projects and photography.

Student accommodation and communal facilities are to be ‘shielded’ from the public realm by planting and landscaping and by a recessed foot print.

Ground floor retail area pushed into the public realm, suitable for small grocery shops; available to both the student and office population.

03 Greater open green space to reflect Cambridge’s parks and gardens and create a welcome tree lined to the city. The trees would also act as a screen to a large area for cycle parking.

04 An enclosed garden provides seating and dynamic landscaping to create a space of rest for the surrounding office occupants and student residents. It also detracts from the vehicle parking.

Close proximity to the train station creates a direct path past the building, offering good opportunities for retail and food and beverage.

[concept]As there was a clear lack of city identity to a train passenger’s entrance into the city of Cambridge, I felt that this was something that could be represented through the building and landscaping. My concept started as a stack of books and through the development and requirement of the uses in the building, the shape of the floor plan transformed from there.

I used the precedence of the Habit 67 in Montreal by Moshi Safdie as a basis for creating a communal space with private balconies and modularised apartments to achieve a simultaneously public and private environment. I also took the example of a prominent landscaping at the front to reflect a socially private space, whilst a more open square would be suitable for the public.

[stage 01]The concept begins as a simple, straightforward stack of books....

[stage 02]But, if we twist these stacks we can create overhangs and balconies, promoting a communal feel and extra living space...

[stage 03]The need for separation between public and private at the ground floor defines the recessed footprint, this can then be reflected in the floors above. We can then push out and pull in walls to create a modularised form.

[layout]From the original concept of a primary symbol of education, the building evolves to provide socially inclusive and exclusive spaces. By utilising a modular geometric arrangements, making use of both setbacks and voids, I aim to create a series of spaces with their own identities.

Disabled accommodation and communal areas are kept to the ground floor, with access to bicycle storage for residents situated at the rear. The remaining 4 floors contains double and single rooms in contained flats, whilst a glazed atrium gives natural light to the corridors of the first 3 floors using roof lights. Again taking inspiration from the modest book, the floors are accessed through a central spine of vertical circulation.

As the area is lacking in any green space for the surrounding offices a modern courtyard is proposed to mimic those of the universities, but with it’s own personality. I have set a space surrounding this garden that would be suitable for future development into restaurants, which would benefit the surrounding community.

[conclusion]The site needs reasons to draw passers-by onto the site. There should be something that could provide for the local community and city as a whole.

01 Canal-sideCanal-side walk running past the site could be put to good use with an existing route past the the site provided.

02 Car parkThere is currently an underused car park in this area, that the garages use.

03 UsageThe use of the dismantled railway is made up of garages and industrial storage.

04 SchoolThere is a school close by which has very little outdoor space of its own and would benefit from a grassy area.

05 Green spaceThe area is currently a concrete jungle with very little green space to break up the monotony of grey. Grass would make the area welcoming.

06 ClubsThese clubs bring activity to the area on a weekend, when the area would otherwise be quiet.

Can I create a solution that incorporates these issues, whilst providing a hub for recent graduating design students to set up their own

business?


New designer hub.

[concept]As my research shows there was a need for green space and a building that students could use as a kick-start for their career. The units would be a temporary, central hub, providing all the needs of an aspiring, entrepreneurial, design student:

• A workshop private & social (lower floor)

• An office space (mezzanine)• And, an area to exhibit their produce.

To draw passers by in, the workshop frontages would be fully glazed to display the student at work, whilst a coffee shop and toilets would be provided as additional reasons to enter onto the site. The outdoor area be suitable for events or a market.

[water drainage]There is always an issue with water ingress in old bridge arches and the way I propose to resolve this issue, is to use copper sheet over any specific problem areas. The water would drain down behind the sheet, onto a liner and would eventually direct water flow into a drain running along the arch wall. In turn this water will be drained out the back of the unit. Over time the water will react with the copper and turn it into a blue green, therefore reflecting the ever changing nature of the design hub.

[workshop and plant]Due to safety and ventilation, there would be a section of the workshop, on the ground floor that would be sectioned off by a glass safety screen. This would only be accessed by the occupant, but still provide visibility to the student at work, at the same time keeping dust, and dangerous machinery away from the public. As each arch will be self-contained, there is a need for a space for individual plant rooms. This will be allocated to the rear of the arch and completely sealed from water ingress

Performing Arts Theatre.

[brief]The brief for this project was to design a performing arts theatre that encompassed a performance area, recording studios, workshops, meeting rooms and editing suites. The sloping of the site towards the canal side was specified as an important consideration.

Site analysis was undertaken in a group and displayed good visibility from a busy road with a sharp descent down to the rivers edge. This drove the location of form of the building.

[site concept]I broke down the brief requirements into 3 distinct areas;

Public:Taking in the performance areas, booking office and a restaurant.

Backstage:Including admin areas, stage storage and dressing rooms,

Workshops:Rehearsal areas, editing suites and recording studios.

The usage dictated the size of each area and the location was moulded by the shape of the riverbank. My preferred layout was option 1 as it took the site context into consideration more than the others and would be more suitable for the space usage.

[interior concept]The concept of the interior came from the need for subtle separations between the public and private spaces within the complex. I did not want to provide a partition wall to completely screen each area, but at the same time I wanted to prevent direct passage from one space to the other, unless by a purposeful route. A member of public would be able to view the inner workings of the performance, but not distract and impede the performers work.

The concept of a translucent partition is derived from strands of a loom. Leicester has a rich textile history and I wanted to reflect that in the core of the building.

This maquette study shows different ways this loom could be represented. Red was chosen to create a vibrant contrast to the monochromatic feel of the rest of the space. There is a section of wavy thread, regular spaced thread, crossed over cotton and half-spaced strands. The study shows the contrast between each, and how they would appear from certain angles. This maquette displays how each formation of strands would act as a partition and if they would create an effective translucent separation.

“Ceres is an award winning, not-for-profit sustainability centre located in East Brunswick (Melbourne). Ceres run environmental education programs, urban agriculture projects, green technology demonstration and a number of social enterprises, including a market, café and grocery.”

Along with other resolutions to site issues a more permanent band stand design is required for the site. The organisation is not-for-profit so therefore all the resolutions need to be cost effective. This competition has been opened to the office for anyone who is interested in taking part. The competition is an individual submission and it is currently on-going.

The new luxury precinct is an impressive arcade for passengers departing Melbourne, designed to create a lasting memory of the city through distinctive architecture that is evocative of the city’s atmosphere, and thoughtfully curated portals that showcase the best of Melbourne’s design.

It is an opportunity to present luxury brands in a serene, and highly opulent retail space which has been designed with a decadent ceiling to encourage footfall through the generous and tall shopfront portals in which retailers can display their bespoke window displays.

The luxury precinct is the first new space in the T2 retail redevelopment, and seamlessly intermeshes with the adjacent precincts to maximise its presence to the airport’s diverse clientèle. It is an important last point of engagement between the city and its visitors, leaving a rich and vibrant flavour of Melbourne that endures.

This area of the refurbishment in the airport has a very complicated ceiling form. As you can see from the 3D section the ceiling is held using a complex arrangement of structural hangars. Sitting above this is a maze-like array of mechanical and electrical services which are provided to the tenants of the units.

The ceiling extends down into the plenums sitting in the shopfront portals. These frame each shopfront. The driving desire behind the luxury design is to keep the feature ceiling uncluttered by services, so the panels over the plenums are perforated to provide outlet for wifi and ventilation.

We want to welcome the intricacies and beauty of Islamic art through cut out partitions and lighting. These areas are often avoided in airport prayer room design.

The palette would be warm but subtle and purposeful, in built shelving would create a sense of belonging.

To avoid offending specific faiths the feature of the room would be texture and a focus on materiality. Timber will focus heavily, with well thought out, simple furniture. A simple altar can provide a focal point and subdued earth tones will compose a meditative atmosphere.

The lighting in these rooms is absolute key. Taking inspiration from Tadao Ando, recessed lighting and lit cut-outs can provide central focal points. The absence of stark lighting will remove the user from the feeling of being in an airport. Also, there are not windows so diffused lighting could offer this illusion.

One aspect of the project has been to design a multi-faith area for the terminal. Due to the restrictions of the existing build the location chosen by the client is a difficult footprint, along a back of house corridor.

This design exercise was undertaken by myself and overseen by the interior designer. This small project took a great deal of research and precedent studies due to strict rules around religious spaces. In this case

the client gave the chaplain of the airport the task of listing requirements. These are the resulting outcome from the studies and the client has been happy with the options report.


London Railway Arches.

Throughout my time in Chapman Taylor I have worked on five separate arch schemes within London. Each project has had the focus of the immediate community, in conjunction with an increased rental potential for the client. The projects have been individual in their own right but, have included very similar approaches. The client wanted a sense of coherency with the shop front design, whether the use is retail, office, leisure or food and beverage. To achieve this we designed a recognisable industrial styled shopfront that would suit all the arch shapes, with modular changes to adapt to different usages. Public realm outside the shopfronts was to be considered with the collaboration of Grimshaw Architects. The vision in refurbishing these arches is to promote the areas as safer and more accessible to the community.

The concept for this arch front has taken the privacy of office use in mind. There is still a signage zone that can be used if needs be, but the overall design is for a discrete frontage that still allows light to enter both the lower and upper floor. This specific set of arches are able to provide a mezzanine and so the upper set of glazing will provide ventilation out the front using louvres and a plant room.

Another arch height capable of access to a mezzanine floor; this design would provide access to a food and beverage unit. The louvres can be expanded through the modular division to allow for more ventilation, depending on unit area The glazing would be seamless, through the use of spider fixings and signage can be placed at a vertical angle beside the door. The modular aspect allows for double or single door installation where needed.

This is a single storey arch. The shopfront layout is for a retail usage. The maximum zone for signage and a large surface area of glazing provides a clear advert for the tenant. The upper glazing will be sectioned using steel mullions and a brick infill against the glazing’s frame that will provide a stability to the shopfront. This is a modular system to allow for either double or single doors.

Three of the London railway arch schemes that I have worked on have been delivered in Revit. We were sent a 3D survey model suitable for Revit use and used this to incorporate our proposed options.

Each scheme came with it’s own specific constraints. This particular project had deep basements with difficult access and in dire need of waterproofing. The exterior also had issues as there was very little public realm surrounding the building, which had a great impact on the fire escape routes and planning. In another area of London we had the issue of the platform above being in use; this made it particularly difficult for ventilation. Therefore, as shown in the concept drawings above, the louvres are located within the shopfront itself.

[design concept]Many of the arch projects we worked on had a similar design concept, with changes due to the shapes of arches and to locations of entrances. As previous we had to consider the use of louvres for food and beverage units.

The client decided on the concept option of an industrial look to coincide with the recognisable features of the rail industry. The central beams would imitate structural I beams and railway tracks. These split up a glazed shopfront which, in turn is sectioned into 5 or 6 modules, with the movement of the lower vertical beam to either create a single or double door access.

The central beam was dedicated to a signage zone. The idea was to keep a continuity throughout each unit. So either the sign could be hung below the zone, behind the glazing or an individual cut-out, backlit sign could be used in the tenant’s required font.

Mega Structures.

[brief]Working immediately under my director I assisted in coming up with a design concept. Under client instruction, we utilised a super structure system from Geometrica to create a coherent theme through each of his company’s buildings as a unique branding. There was a row of out-dated headquarters buildings, a proposed aeroplane hangar, and 2 heavy industrial sites.

Geometrica is a world-wide company working primarily with unique shaped mega structures, through a seemingly simple system of steel poles and fixing. This technique means that the structures can span great distances without the use of structural columns. The system is then usually combined with a rain-screen cladding or some sort of glazing. In this circumstance we wanted to combine the bare-bones structure with a repeating cladding. The concept was to create a ‘brand’ to these buildings, using sinuous designs covered in similar coloured scale like patterns through layered tiles . The vision was for the scales to be seen as one colour block from far away, if you step closer you see the subtle changes in colour and then closer again you would see the scales themselves.

Photo Competition.

One of my hobbies is amateur photography. I enjoy documenting my travels and interesting environments. This year I entered the Chapman Taylor photography competition. There were three different categories. Here is my final selection photographs for the competition.

This photograph was taken during a safari in South Africa. I liked the contrast between the barren of the foreground to the greener background and hills. I felt the sparseness of the tree that the rhino were sheltering under was particularly poignant.

We were on the road quite early and were able to see the cloudy haze still sitting on the tops of the mountains.
