Notch is a step back from the cloud and a step forward in file sharing simplicity. Notch with it’s external USB drive allows for simple file sharing across devices. No chords, no clouds no confusing photo streams. Just load what you want on the flash drive and plug it in.

Sketchbooks are the my favorite. When I was introduced to Scientific Glass Blowing I couldn’t stop thinking about the possibilities. La bouteille is my first experiment with the craft. But what started out as an experiment soon turned into much more.

Page 13: Slade portfolio nov 2014

Scientific Glass Blowing is a unique craft that requires both the skill of the human hand and specialized machines to make almost perfect scientific and chemistry equipment. The stopper aparatus allows for no metal mounting parts and a fully enclosed tube.

La Bouteille was shown and sold at the Milan Design Week 2014. I look forward to experiementing further with both tradtional and scientific glass blowing.

As a group e we started exploring folding and Polycarbonate with the end goal of creating a luminaire. There was a question from the very beginning whether or not we should pursue a pattern based shade or use the folding to make a form. We ultimately decided to do both.

Page 17: Slade portfolio nov 2014

We used a laser cutter to scor the folds and then each lamp was folded individually by hand and each base was milled out of walnut. We manufactured a total of 17 lamps.

After designing and manufacturing our lamp we didn’t stop there. Joining with other designers we organized a public show and sale. Each lamp was sold for $30. We sold out in under an hour and took several orders.

IMPACT

With regular feedback from the masters at TREK I set out to design a fresh aesthetic for a bike helmet with the daily commuter in mind. Air vents are both functional and graphic. So thats where I started.

Most often inflatable furniture is seen as ciche, immature and cheap. It’s functionality however intrigued me and I wanted to see if I could somehow change the way we look at inflatables.

Page 27: Slade portfolio nov 2014

Internal structure is the key to forming an inflatable. By making some baffles smaller and some larger you can manipulate the form and in the case of a chair make it more or less stable. I went through many iterations on a miniature scale before I moved on to full size.

Page 28: Slade portfolio nov 2014

The cover is the real game changer. By adding a padded upholstery cover the inflatable doesn’t feel like the usual sticky, cheap pool toy. Now it;s like any modern lounge chair. Ch-air is great for those who move often or live in small apartments.

Page 29: Slade portfolio nov 2014

Ch-air was shown at Le Lieu du Design in Paris, France 2014 and at the Milan Design Week 2014.
