bridging the confluence (In Progress)River Des Peres, Saint Louis, MOI examined the confluence of the River Des Peres and the Mississippi River, and how varying bathymetry and water levels change the site. I applied this system of flow and continuity onto the traffic patterns and connectivity of the greater Saint Louis area. My proposed project for the River Des Peres connects the existing roads, bike paths and parks through additional networks of walking/biking paths and waterways, and expansion of the riparian edge to promote ecological growth on a formerly engineered waterway.

Urban Master Plan: Cascine park

Florence, Italy (Collaboration with Alexander Clouser)My partner and I re-designed the East end of the existing site to improve circulation and increase the site’s connection to the larger urban fabric of the city. The site, located between the historic center and residential areas of the city, is an important connecting space between the past and the future of Florence.

The new plan creates a series of interconnected green spaces, plazas, riverfront development and additional infrastructure that will revitalize the area and capitalize upon a growing cultural hub surrounding Cascine.

Digital morphology

Parametric Design for Digital FabricationUsing Grasshopper, I explored different ways to create the same modular variation as a natural system by changing a variety of parameters such as size, number, and height of mapped objects onto a surface.

I then used this definition to create a ribbed frame, surface, and tabbed “bubble structures.”

Research Facility, Chain of Rocks BridgeThis project focused on the intersection of technology and the environment through the creation of an observatory for environmental effects. Based on the concepts of liquid tectonics and the properties of bubbles, this observatory acts as both a residential space for the scientist as well as investigatory and public spaces.

This wind mapping center would collect data from the site through large ‘sails’ that channel and manipulate air flow over the site.

Concordia Seminary, Saint LouisThis multi-step project began with the creation of a clustered module capable of manipulating light and texture. The module design became the basis of a play-space on a local community site.

The playground design included a restroom and storage structure, seating throughout the site, and multi-level landscape features for climbing and exploring.

Natural PhenomenonsOrganizations like the National Oceanic and atmospheric administration (NOAA) map changing pressure systems and wind patterns to locate tropical storms and severe weather. The hand-held bubble tracker machine maps the pressure changes in the user’s breath through ink plots, similar to a barometric weather device. The adjustable lenses of the bubble wand are dipped into the ink well, and the resulting bubbles are plotted onto the adjustable easel.

Adaptive spaceMulti-functional project designed for local ‘abandoned’ lot in St. Louis Soulard district. Programming included three-story greenhouse with perforated roof to allow controlled light conditions. Partially below-grade restaurant allowed for the structure to be integrated into the landscape with a walkable roof. Positioning of complex within site and contouring of the landscape encourages traffic flow from heavily populated areas into greenhouse landscape.
