Rob and Camilla Paterson recently moved to Dunkirk after Rob built them their dream home. They are now enjoying this incredible la-bour of love and raising their family in their special home. Rob, you own a company in partnership with your brother-in-law called KR Projects. You have completed 13 houses in Dunkirk and you are busy with 3 more at the moment. Tell us about your career and how you became involved in construction.I never imagined I would end up in construction when I left school many moons ago. I grew up on and around boats in Simons Town, Cape Town, and couldn’t picture life beyond regattas and the thrill and adventure of travelling and sailing. I studied a marketing de-gree while working as a project manager for my dad’s engineering company. My dad was previously a Captain in the Navy so working

for him was no free ride. I learnt a lot from him about managing staff, client service and thinking outside the box. After completing my studies I went to work in Europe as a professional skipper and race crew. It was in Gatwick airport on the way to sail in Croatia that I met my wife (proving good things can come from plane delays). After we were married I managed to convince her that running a yacht as a captain and chef team would be great fun (I may have left out the part about long hours, hard work, fussy guests and Atlantic crossings). We did that for four years, sailing between the Caribbean, US and Mediterranean, before returning home to have our first daughter. Savannah was born and life was forever changed. There was no way I could be at sea for extended periods away from my girls. Having managed superyachts and overseen the build of a new boat I had skills that were transferrable to the construction industry particularly being attentive to detail. My brother-in-law, Karl Wang, had been in construction for many years and was planning a move to the North Coast and wanted to start a family run business with us. Karl is the most honest and upstanding guy I know and there isn’t anyone else I would have wanted to partner with. Our goal at KR Projects is not only to build homes that surpass the

client’s and architect’s expectations but to do it with integrity. It has been our mission to negate the bad reputation that builders seem to have and make the process as stress-free as possible, hopefully even enjoyable. Our Dunkirk clients are also our neighbours and, by the end of a build, friends that we can have a beer with while plan-ning their next building venture. Camilla, you are a physio by profession and can often be found at Alberlito Hospital helping new moms after they have given birth. How did you get into physiotherapy?I only decided between physio and architecture a few days before varsity started and now with a hubby in Construction and a building boom happening I often wonder if I made the right decision! But I do love what I do and luckily there’s a baby boom happening too. I worked as a locum physio in Women’s Health in the UK and I never dreamed it was an area I would grow to love and feel extremely passionate about (even more so after experiencing pregnancy and childbirth for myself). Most people just think about sports injuries and backache when they think of physio but many mom’s who have de-livered their babies at Alberlito will know there’s another side which includes advice and specific exercises to recover from childbirth as

T.well as helping with breast care, encouraging breast feeding and supporting new moms through an emotional and sometimes over-whelming experience. Cam, what is your favourite thing about your job (especially with you being so involved with new moms)? The first few hours and days of life with a new baby can be the most awesome surreal experience filled with extreme joy or panic or pain or all three. It’s usually a rollercoaster of highs and lows and I get to be a part of that excitement everyday. Thankfully most women only remember the joy and forget to tell new moms about cracked nipples, engorged breasts, painful stitches, weak muscles and jelly bellies. Providing some relief and hope especially on day 3 when hormones are wreaking havoc can be very rewarding. You are parents to two beautiful girls, Savannah and Willow. Tell us a bit more about your family. We are so utterly blessed to have the most delightful two daughters. Savannah is four going on fourteen and Willow is 15 months. They have us both totally wrapped around their pink, nail-polished fingers and enjoying princess-mermaid-dance parties on a nightly basis. They have a very special bond and have even worked out a way to conspire against us… They take turns to wake us up in the night so by 5am we are ready to concede to cartoons on TV for one more

hour of sleep! When this happens it is also very common to come through to 3 more children on the couch as they have somehow managed to relay this plan to their cousins who live next door. The five cousins get along beautifully for the most part but living in such close proximity can be confusing. Our one-year-old niece, Molly, is convinced her name is Willow! You are both very busy and run around all week. What do you and your family enjoy doing in your down time?Is there such a thing with kids??? In our BC (before children) days we would have been horrified if we had seen a flash forward to our weekends now. But times have changed and a perfect Saturday would probably be doing the Park Run, followed by a morning on the beach, an after lunch team sleep and then a braai with family and friends watching the rugby. What made you choose Dunkirk to build your home and settle down with your family? We love everything about Dunkirk. The forest and wildlife is magical (except when the bucks eat our plants), we make full use of the gym, pool, beach clubhouse and restaurant and we love the close proximity to everything. School, work, church, gym, shops, ballet,

beach is all up, down or across the road. We love that we can safe-ly walk, ride bikes or push a pram around even in the middle of the night. But the best part of Dunkirk is definitely the people. They say it takes a village to raise a child and Dunkirk is one of the nicest vil-lages around. We loved the building process and although we love our home, which is practical and inviting, we would also love to build again. The only problem is we wouldn’t want to leave Dunkirk and there’s no more land available. What is your favourite thing about living on the North Coast? What places do you frequent?Definitely the weather. Two weeks of cold wintery weather a year is more than enough for us. We light our fire when the temperature drops below 22 degrees. We love the slower pace, no traffic, casual laid-back people, outdoor places and we can just about wear flip-flops everywhere year round. With kids that scream and get carsick, venturing outside of the Salt Rock/Ballito Bubble only happens when absolutely necessary. Kid friendly places like Sugar Rush, Sage, Flag Farm, the Litchi Orchard, and the beach is where we can be found on a weekend or for free babysitting, food and a nap Gogo and Bumbie’s House!

What are the goals you and your family have set yourselves for the coming year?At the moment we’re on a mission to try and eat more healthily. Our daughter has celiac disease so we are all trying to align our eating with hers - organic, grassfed, gluten-, dairy- and sugar-free(we have become the fussy boat guests we once hated). It is proving quite a challenge and still doesn’t extend as for chocolate and wine.Long-term we would love to be able to take a sabbatical and go sailing with the girls in either the Caribbean or South Pacific or even attempt backpacking. We would love them to grow up being com-fortable around other cultures, languages and customs and try to instil that sense of adventure in them whenever possible.KR Projects is also hoping to assist Olive Tree Church in building a much-needed crèche at Wangu. A poverty stricken area only half an hour North of here. We would welcome any input from our fellow Dunkirk community.

Replace your

multivitamin

Recent research published in the Annals of Inter-nal Medicine found that multivitamins did nothing to stave off heart disease, cancer, or age-related cognitive decline. Even worse: Some findings sug-gest that high doses of beta-carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E may harm your health. Any way you look at it, the case against multivitamins is pretty strong. So, how do you get all the vitamins, miner-als, and essential nutrients you need? Here are 5 nutrient-dense foods that will provide all you need from A to zinc.

with these 5 foodswww.prevention.com

Page 10: ESTATE EMAG AUGUST 2016s3.amazonaws.com/gloportalemag/dunkirk-estate/20160901/issue_1… · It was in Gatwick airport on the way to sail in Croatia that I met my wife (proving good

10

1. Almonds

This tasty nut is a great place to start when replacing your multivitamin.

A new study found that adding 1.5 ounces of almonds to adults’ and

children’s daily diets raised levels of essential fatty acids, vitamin E, and

magnesium to the daily recommended levels. Plus, eating the nut daily

tended to crowd out empty calories from unhealthy snacks like chips.

2. Shellfish

Oysters, mussels, clams, and scallops offer the strongest concentrations

of vitamins and minerals of any animal. They pack a wallop of nutrients

while being low calorie, low fat, and high in protein. Unlike your

multivitamin pill, they’re also delicious. A handful of raw oysters offer 10

times the recommended daily allowance of vitamin B12, 15 times the

recommended zinc intake, 5 times the daily copper requirement, and

3 times our daily selenium needs. Iron? It’s got a full day’s requirement. A

serving of mussels offers 3 days’ worth of manganese. Shellfish are high

in omega-3 fatty acids and low in omega-6s—an outstanding ratio for

heart health and brain function. (Here’s how to get omega-3s if you’re

a vegetarian.) They’re filled with the minerals copper, magnesium, and

phosphorus. They also make an excellent source of vitamin D. Find a way

to squeeze shellfish into your diet at least once a week and you’ll cover a

good chunk of your nutrient needs.

3. Quinoa

This shelf-stable, inexpensive food is completely capable of replacing

your multivitamin on its own. Technically, quinoa isn’t a grain, but a seed

from a plant in the same family as beets, spinach, and chard. The tiny

seed provides heart-healthy fats and nutrients like folate, manganese,

magnesium, iron, copper, phosphorus, and zinc. It actually has a stronger

concentration of antioxidant phytonutrients than cranberries—publicized

as a superfood—and it offers a wide array of anti-inflammatory nutrients.

11

4. Lacto-Fermented Veggies

That weird-sounding label just refers to sauerkraut, kimchi, or some types of

pickles that have been fermented with bacteria known as lactobacillus.

The vegetables are kept in clean water and salt, an environment in which

only lactobacillus can survive. The process increases the levels of vitamins

and enzymes: A serving of these foods provides a full dose of vitamin

C, all of the B vitamins, and essential amino acids, especially lysine and

methionine. Lacto-fermentation also provides a ton of beneficial bacteria

to the gut.

5. Seaweed

Turns out that the slimy underwater plant that wraps around your ankle

at the beach is a nutrient powerhouse. Seaweed absorbs the ocean’s

minerals, which means it’s chock full of iron, calcium, potassium, niacin,

phosphorus, and magnesium; the aquatic green contains 56 minerals the

human body requires.

My Dad, Des Jamieson, and I have done a few things over the decades to tick off some of his life’s bucket-list. When he was 50 years old I took him in a double canoe down the Dusi Canoe Marathon, which we completed with some minor swims. At 60 years old we did the Otter Trail together with a few mates. Seven-ty was a bit quiet and for his 80th birthday he wanted to free fall, so I joined him and we did a sky-dive (tandem with instructor). My folks live 500m away from Dunkirk in Salt Rock overlooking Tiffany Beach. This was our family beach cottage some 30 years ago and they finally retired to live there. I have always been a bit of an adrenalin junkie and two things I have wanted to do were Bungee jumping (did so many years ago off Vic Falls) and sky diving. I have never got around to jumping from a plane, so when my dad said he wanted to do it for his 80th birthday, I liter-ally jumped at it and joined him. It was one of life’s most amazing moments.... Falling out the tiny plane at 10,000 feet then free-fall-ing for 40 seconds then out with the chute and gliding down to earth for 4 minutes. Absolutely amazing!!! A must do!

THANK YOUWe want to thank Dunkirk residents for supporting some of our kids on the Estate (Mia and Bella Howie, Nate and Jack Ross-Kent and Lola Wang) last month. They sold lemonade and homemade goodies in support of some wonderful organizations. They made over R1200 for Project 500, a Linc Sisterhood initiative raising money for Project Dignity and the Nkobon-go Crisis Centre. Residents were just so encouraging and supportive of their endeavor, it was really wonderful to see.

9 TIPS FOR GROWING A

SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS To succeed in business today, you need to be flexible and have good planning and organizational skills. Many people start a business thinking that they’ll turn on their computers or open their doors and start making money - only to find that making money in a business is much more difficult than they thought. You can avoid this in your business ventures by taking your time and planning out all the necessary steps you need to reach to achieve success.

www.investopedia.com

Page 19: ESTATE EMAG AUGUST 2016s3.amazonaws.com/gloportalemag/dunkirk-estate/20160901/issue_1… · It was in Gatwick airport on the way to sail in Croatia that I met my wife (proving good

19

1. Get Organized - To be successful in business you need to be organized.

Organization will help you complete tasks and stay on top of things to be

done. A good way to do this is to create a to-do list each day - as you

complete each item, check it off your list. This will ensure that you’re

not forgetting anything and you’re completing all the tasks that are

essential to the survival of your business.

2. Keep Detailed Records - All successful businesses keep detailed

records. By keeping detailed records, you’ll know where the business

stands financially and what potential challenges you could be facing.

Just knowing this gives you time to create strategies to overcome the

obstacles that can prevent you from being successful and growing

your business.

3. Analyze Your Competition - Competition breeds the best results.

To be successful, you can’t be afraid to study and learn from your

competitors. After all, they may be doing something right that you

can implement in your business to make more money.

4. Understand the Risks and Rewards - The key to being successful

is taking calculated risks to help your business grow. A good question

to ask is “What’s the downside?” If you can answer this question, then

you know what the worst-case scenario is. This knowledge will allow

you to take the kinds of calculated risks that can generate tremendous

rewards for your business.

20

5. Be Creative - Always be looking for ways to improve your business

and to make it stand out from the competition. Recognize that you

don’t know everything and be open to new ideas and new approaches

to your business.

6. Stay Focused - The old saying that “Rome was not built in a day”

applies here. Just because you open a business doesn’t mean that

you’re going to immediately start making money. It takes time to let

people know who you are, so stay focused on achieving your short-

term goals and give the rest time to come together on its own.

7. Prepare to Make Sacrifices - The lead-up to starting a business is hard

work, but after you open your doors, your work has just begun. In many

cases, you have to put in more time than you would if you were working

for someone else. In turn, you have to make sacrifices, such as spending

less time with family and friends in order to be successful.

8. Provide Great Service - There are many successful businesses that forget

that providing great customer service is important. If you provide better

service for your customers, they’ll be more inclined to come to you the

next time they need something instead of going to your competition.

9. Be Consistent - Consistency is key component to making money in

business. You have to consistently keep doing the things necessary to be

successful day in and day out. This will create long-term positive habits

that will help you make money over the long term.

Conclusion - Starting and running a successful business can be rewarding

and challenging. Success requires focus, discipline and perseverance.

However, success will not come overnight - it requires a long-term focus

and that you remain consistent in challenging environments.
