Featuring...

On Tuesday, March 4, 2014, sixteen of our young outstanding Junior High band students participated in the University of Minnesota Dulu-th’s 46th Annual Junior High Honor Band Festival.Participants were Kiana Asbell, Chase Bergstedt, Dylan Carlson, Alyssa Granholm, Zach Kangas, Ai-yanna Klaphake, Eric Meysembourg, Gretta Moores, Brita Mowers, Eric Newman, Ian Rossetti, Kirsten Rye, Caden Salo, Declan Sinnot- James, Corra Thomson, and Judy Wage-maker. The Honor Bands were composed predominately of outstanding 8th and 9th grade students from over 500 nominations from 52 schools throughout the region. There were three bands this year with a total of 330 students. The Gold Band was conducted by guest Michael Swee-ney, the Maroon Band was conduct-ed by Dr. Daniel Eaton (UMD) and guest Laura Goucher conducted the White Band.Michael Sweeney is currently Di-rector of Band Publications for Hal Leonard Corporation in Milwaukee,

Wisconsin, one of the largest pub-lishers of printed music in the world. Michael is directly responsible for the development, production, record-ing and marketing of new publica-tions for school bands. In addition, he contributes as a composer and ar-ranger in all instrumental areas, and is particularly known for his writing at the younger levels for concert band and jazz. Since joining the company in 1982, Hal Leonard has published over 500 of his compositions and arrangements. Mr. Sweeney is a 1977 graduate of Indiana University (Bloomington). Prior to working for Hal Leonard he was a band director in Ohio and Indiana.Mr. Sweeney wrote a commissioned piece of music for this festival en-titled Due North and it received its world premier by the members of the Gold band during the afternoon con-cert.The students received their music at 9am and learned as much as pos-sible over the course of the follow-ing 5 hours in preparation for the 3:30 concert. Playing to a capacity crowd of 550 people in the Marshall

Performing Arts Center, the bands were entertaining to witness and they sounded impressive. During the con-cert, Mr. Sweeney spoke of the im-portance of having and maintaining a quality music education program for our youth because it teaches to the whole person. He said that much of what music teaches us cannot be measured on a test but has a direct and lasting effect on the success for the individual over their lifetime. The Esko students found this to be a very rewarding experience. Some of

the comments expressed were, “This really boosted my self confidence.” “It was really weird, but cool, play-ing for an entirely different conduc-tor.” “It was an educational and enjoyable day of learning and playing music with new people.”And, “It really made me appreciate how good our band is in Esko.”

Esko Book Needs Another Chapter? The conclusion of the boys basketball story in the recently published Esko’s Corner, An Illustrated History of Esko and Thomson Township, recaps the 2013 season and ends with this: “Did someone say, “Wait ‘Til Next Year?” Well, 2014 did, in fact, prove to be the dream season every longtime Esko basketball fan has longed for. And as a Duluth News Tribune reporter noted after the Eskomos won their first state championship, the Esko Historical Society’s new book might suddenly require another chapter. Moreover, as of this writing, the Esko girls were also on their way to the state tournament. While a separate Esko all-sports history is under serious consideration, orders continue to pour in for Esko’s Corner. After two months, nearly 1,000 have been sold. Retail outlets in the immediate area are as follows: Esko—A Shear Thing, Barnes Care Assisted Living, Esko Self Service, Eskomo Pizza Pies, Finn & Feather Hair Design, Hair Designs by Sherri, Widdes Feed & Farm Supply, Wirtz Service.

Cloquet—Bearaboo Coffee Escape, Bergquist Import & Gift Shop, Carlton County Historical Museum, Kamari Gift Shop.

Scanlon—Trapper Pete’s.

Books are also available in Duluth at The Bookstore at Fitger’s and Gannucci’s Italian Market. More Duluth outlets are expected soon.

Esko’s 1st Annual Wood Shop Sale

Esko School’s Business and Tech Ed classes are coming togeth-er to sell handmade, unfinished wood products made by students in the

recently added construction tech classes. The Accounting class is handling transac-

tions and records; the Intro to Business class is in charge of advertising and sales; and the Construction and Wood Tech class, as you might guess, is creating the products. It is a really interesting, hands-on way for the classes to learn about and experience their classes in a real-world setting.

The products featured will include quality, handmade, unfinished end tables, step stools, shelves, and cutting boards. A limited number of specialty products such as serving trays and napkin holders will also be available to purchase. All proceeds will go back into the Industrial Tech program for new materials and continued maintenance of the machines.

This, first ever, sale will be held on conference night, April 3rd from 3:30-7:00. Students will be available to provide customer service, sales and product support, and carry out servic-es to your vehicles.

This opportunity would not have been possible without the support of our community and school bringing our Technical and Indus-trial Tech Program. Join us in celebrating the student’s efforts!

MCA TestingThe MCA testing season is among us for grades 3-6. Our students in grades 3-6 will take the MCA Reading Test on April 28-May 2. The MCA Math Test will be administered on May 5-9. The MCA Science Test will be on May 14 for 5th graders only.It is very important that the students get a good night’s sleep each night and that they eat a healthy breakfast in the morning. Please help ensure that your child is rested and prepared for each and every school day. Also

avoid appointments or family trips on these testing dates. It’s imperative that the students are here on these days.

Elementary Teacher RequestsWe will follow the same process as we did last year for Teacher Requests. There is a Teacher Request Form that will need to be filled out if you wish to request a teacher for your child for next year. This form can be picked up in the elementary office. One form will need to be completed for each teacher request (one per student). This form must be completed in full and turned into the office by Thursday, May 1st. There may be some cases in which a teacher request cannot be accommodated. Requests made after May 1st will not be granted.

Morning Drop-offPolicy under School Hours in the Elementary Student Handbook states:Students are not to be in the school buildings before 7:45 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m. unless they are under the direct supervision of a teacher or coach. Students are not to be in the hallways or school commons area after 3:30 without staff supervision. Student rides should be arranged accordingly. The buildings are closed to students on weekends and vacations unless a teacher or coach is present and has scheduled the use of the building through the Community Education Office. One of my favorite activities

in my role as elementary counselor here at Winterquist Elementary is de-livering classroom guidance lessons. When I am in the classroom, all the students get to meet me and become familiar with me and what my role as counselor is here at school. I also get to reach the entire grade level with important information that they can use throughout their lives. In the months of March and April, I will be spending time with the Kindergarten and Fifth grades.

In the Kindergarten class-rooms I am delivering classroom les-sons using the Second Step curricu-lum. This curriculum is designed to teach skills in empathy, impulse control and calming one’s self down during times of anger or frustration. One of the goals of the program is to help children identify feelings in themselves and others, and ulti-mately teach them pro-social skills so they become more skilled in their interactions with others. Another goal of the curriculum is to help the Kindergartners become healthy and independent problem solvers. By learning these skills, the Kindergart-ners will affect their learning here at school in a positive manner.

In the Fifth grade classrooms the curriculum is Life Skills Train-ing. The goal of this curriculum is to promote health and personal de-velopment. The curriculum includes lessons on topics such as self-esteem and goal setting, decision-making, communication, dealing with stress and smoking information. While the majority of the lessons are focused on general life skills, intent of the cur-riculum is to prevent youth from us-ing tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. At the Fifth grade level, the health consequences of using tobacco are taught. The curriculum does not specifically address the health risks of using alcohol or other drugs. The topic of alcohol or drug use is dis-cussed by letting the students know that the techniques they could use to refuse tobacco can also be used to re-fuse alcohol or other drugs.

I am excited to be given the opportunity to present these valu-able lessons to the Kindergartners and Fifth graders. I appreciate the classroom teachers for allowing me to take some of their class time to present this information. If parents have any questions about the curricu-lum used in the classroom, they may contact me with their questions.

Upcoming are the following very important dates to know for you and your students:

March 14---End of Quarter 3

March 24 - 28 -Spring Break (No School)

April 3---High School Conferences (3:30 to 7:00)• March conferences will take place in the varsity gymnasium.

April 21--- Student Make-up Snow Day

This spring, Esko High School will be practicing campus-wide lockdown drills. Like fire drills, lock-downs are designed to train students and staff on emergency procedures, and they are required by law. The

following school policy outlines our procedures:LOCK DOWN DRILLS—Minnesota Law requires public schools to practice school-wide lock down drills. When students are informed via intercom that a lockdown is in effect, they must:• P r o c e e d immediately to the nearest open classroom. • Proceed to the nearest office if they are locked out of classrooms (or are in the high school commons area).• Remain quiet to ensure that adults can get their attention if necessary and to simulate what would be required in the event of an actual lock down.• Remain in lock down mode until “All Clear” has been announced via intercom.Staff will lock doors, pull shades, turn out lights, and move students away from windows. Other policy for review:PHOTOGRAPHS--- No photographs/audio/video are to be taken at Esko High School without

the consent of school administration. All photographs taken on school property or at school events are subject to administrative review. Where applicable, any student who takes a photograph or records audio/video during the regular school day, without appropriate permission, will be disciplined.

STUDENT DRESS—Students are expected to use good taste in their dress. Students will not be allowed to present themselves at school in any manner which causes a disturbance or distraction. Shirts that expose the waist and midriff, or muscle shirts, and tank tops are inappropriate. Items of clothing that promote alcohol, tobacco and drugs, or are sexually or are anti socially suggestive will not be acceptable. Students will not be allowed to wear caps, bandannas, hoods or head coverings during the school day. The only exception will be on specified dress up days, or an allowance for illness resulting in hair loss. Our school policy does not include specifications regarding minimum

length of shorts and skirts or maximum depth of necklines on shirts. The policy is designed for flexibility in accommodating changing fashions and the appropriateness issues that come with ever-changing student dress. Please be mindful of what your child is wearing to school each day. Outfits that may be cute and appropriate for out-of-school activities may not be appropriate for school. As the temperatures in Northeastern Minnesota rise, please be mindful in monitoring your student’s dress, especially for excessively revealing apparel and questionable t-shirt subject matter (two issues that commonly lead to problems for teens). Students are not permitted to carry backpacks to and from classes, nor into the cafeteria. Backpacks are to be left in student lockers between the hours of 8:15 and 3:15, with exceptions made for transporting clothing to and from physical education class or by special permission of the high school principal.

Around TownMINUTESTOWN BOARD MEETINGFEBRUARY 6, 2014Present: Terry Hill, Tony Compo, Ruth Janke, Bill Gerard, Rhonda Peleski, David Pritchett Absent: David SunnarborgChairperson Hill called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. in the Town Board Room at the Town Hall. Compo made a motion to accept the minutes of the previous meeting. Second by Gerard. Motion carried. Compo made a motion to approve the current vouchers in the amount of $ 14,783.45 (Check #’s 39118-39156) to pay payroll and due bills and electronic payments in the amount of $ 6,242.00. Second by Janke. Motion carried. Ellen Pillsbury, ARDC, and Mike Tardy, County Engineer, were present to discuss the recent Safe Routes to Schools grant application. The local match amount originally listed on the application was incorrect. The 20 % required match will be $90,000 to extend the walking path from Maple Drive to Korby Road. A motion was made by Gerard with a second by Compo to amend resolution # 14-01 to change the local match amount from $70,000 to $ 90,000. Motion carried. Discussion continued on other grants that can be applied for to help with the required local match. The Carlton County Board has already approved the agreement with the Township to act as fiscal agent. Tardy outlined some of the other requirements in the agreement. Carlton County provided construction engineering on the 2013 walking path project. They will not do that this time. The agreement also requires that the Town provide snow removal on the trail. Tardy will verify that snow removal is required as part of the grant and report back to the Board. Peleski requested the Board review the wages for the janitor/building maintenance position. A motion was made by Janke with a second by Gerard to approve an increase of $ 1.00 per hour for that position. Motion carried. Two applications were received for the Saturday shift at the recycling shed. Both applicants will be interviewed. A meeting is being planned with State Representative Mike Sundin and a representative from Representative Rick Nolan’s office. The purpose is to discuss the possibility of bringing municipal water to the area and funding assistance. Compo reported that the fire department will be testing applicants for future hiring. Compo reported on the Recreation Council meeting he held. The hockey association is in need of storage space and is looking for funding to construct a storage building. A DNR outdoor recreation grant will be looked into. Financial reports were received from the Esko Soccer Association. A motion was made by Compo with a second by Janke to approve the allocation of $ 1,500 for the Esko Soccer Association from the Recreation Fund. Motion carried. A motion to adjourn was made at 7:40 p.m. by Gerard with a second by Janke. Motion carried.

FEBRUARY 20, 2014Present: Terry Hill, Tony Compo, Ruth Janke, Bill Gerard, Rhonda Peleski, David Pritchett Absent: David Sunnarborg Chairperson Hill called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. in the Town Board Room at the Town Hall. Janke made a motion to accept the minutes of the previous meeting with a correction. Second by Gerard. Motion carried. Gerard made a motion to approve the current vouchers in the amount of $ 60,052.14 (Check #’s 39157-39192) to pay payroll and due bills and electronic payments in the amount of $ 3,517.22. Second by Janke. Motion carried. January receipts in the amount of $ 64,984.19 and January fund balances were reviewed. Discussion was held on the Safe Routes to Schools grant. The grant does require that a reasonable effort is needed for snow removal. Discussion was held on building a trail without the grant and about the possibility of making a gravel trail to be paved at some point in the future. This would eliminate most of the engineering fees as well as the snow removal requirement. Gerard will arrange a meeting with County Commissioner Marv Bodie to discuss the Town’s concerns. Peleski provided a draft of the 2013 Annual Statement along with the 2014 tax levy and capital improvement plan. It was asked that the Board review the information before the budget meeting on Monday.

Hill reported on a meeting he and Peleski attended at the Esko School. Others present included representatives from Representative Rick Nolan’s office and Senator Al Franken’s office. The purpose of the meeting was to ask for their assistance in finding funding for a municipal water supply. Compo reported that the fire department interviews and testing of applicants is complete. The department will be presenting a list of new members soon for the Board’s approval. Peleski provided an update on parties interested in lots in the business park.A motion to adjourn was made at 7:02 p.m. by Compo with a second by Janke. Motion carried.Respectfully submitted, Rhonda Peleski, Clerk/Treasurer Terry Hill, ChairpersonTown of Thomson
