E-Parenting: Online SafetyThey connect to it. They download from it. They watch on it. They listen to it. They play on it. They surf on it. They converse with it. Do you know how to monitor it? It can be hard to keep up when today’s inventions are tomor-row’s antiques, but we want our kids to be safe online, and with the amount of time kids spend online, it’s crucial that you do what you can to keep them safe.

Did You Know?

* Kids who are educated in the importance of online safety are more likely to take steps to keep themselves safe online than kids who aren’t educated.* One out of five teenagers use their cell phones to go online. Of those who do, one out of five say their parents don’t know that they do this.* One half of all teenagers post their real age on social networking sites. Two out of five post the name of the city where they live.* While 25 percent of 13- to 15-year-olds think it’s unsafe to post personal stuff online, only 14 percent of 16- to 18-year-olds feel the same way.* Two out of five teenagers are exposed to pornography online* Two out of three teenagers say that cyberbullying is a serious problem.* One out of three say that online bullying is worse than being bullied in person.

Our Youth

For the first time in over 35 years, the Cloquet Bantam AA team qualified for both the Minnesota and VFW State Tournaments. The team qualified by taking 1st place in the Minnesota North Regional Tournament and 1st place in the District 8 VFW Tournament. The Minnesota State Tournament was held the weekend of March 11th-13th in Stillwater. Cloquet Beat #2 ranked Blaine in their 1st game 6-5 in OT and lost their 2nd game to #1 ranked Min-netonka 4-3 in triple OT. They went on to beat #3 ranked Wayzata 8-4 to claim 3rd place. The team will play in the VFW State Tournament in Moor-head the weekend of March 18th-20th.

DESTINATION IMAGINATIONThe Proctor Regional competition for Destination Imagination was held on Saturday, March 12. The tournament had a total of 56 teams from five area school districts participating. Esko Schools had six teams competing. All of our teams chose the “Get a Clue” Fine Arts challenge. To successfully complete this challenge, teams were required to present a mystery story set in a time period before 1990, develop three possible suspect characters and discover live, on stage which of the three is the guilty person, and include a TechniClue to help solve the mystery. Four Esko teams will move on to the state competition to be held at Champlin Park Middle School on Saturday, April 9.

“Wait For It” team members include Rose Jasken, Sawyer Forslund, Ashley Berg, Jodi Claflin, Paige McCoy and Nathan Sunde. Team Manager is Michael Jasken.

“The Case Chasers” team was made up of Ashley Aker, Kaitlin Lattner, Ava Korby, Ella Seboe, Natalie Greniger, Hanna Nooyen and Abby Deltano. Team managers are Jennifer Aker and Jody Greniger.

“The London Lemonators” team is made up of Jonah Laundergan, Mi-chelle Jokinen, Kirstin Wietman, Addison Lanthier, Eleanor Graddy, and Mikayli Marciulionis. The team is managed by AnnaMarie Jokinen.

“The Evil Pop Tarts” team members include Daniel Jokinen, Maddy Graddy, Michaela Olson, Chris Campbell, Dawson Broman, Jenna Sturm and Dylan Broman. Team managers are Jessie Graddy and Kim Broman.

Congratulations to all of our Destination Imagination teams and Good Luck to our state qualifiers!

One of our 6th grade Math Masters teams took second place at the regional meet. The team members were Ethan Fredrickson, Ke-one Anderson, Emily Hanson, Lexi Tester and Jack Johnson. Ethan Fredrickson took 6th out of 61 students in the Fact Drill. He also took

7th place out of 61 in the Individual Rounds. Chad Hart placed 5th and Ke-one Anderson 4th in the Individual Rounds.

Please congratulate these students on their success. Go Esko!!!

STATE GEOGRAPHY BEEHunter Eickhoff has qualified for the state Ge-ography Bee to be held at St. Cloud State Uni-versity on Friday, April 1. This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competi-tion, which is in its 28th year. Hunter was the Lincoln High School champion for 2016. He completed an online qualifying test and be-cause he placed in the top 100 of the top-scor-ing students in Minnesota, he has been invited to participate in the state bee. Good luck, Hunter!

Eskomo Activities

Please mark your calendar for the Esko High School ALL SPORTS MEETING on Thursday, August 4, 2016

at 7pm in the school cafeteria.

The meeting is required for parents and athletes in grades 7-9 and optional for returning athletes in grades 10-12.

During the meeting, we will be discussing school and athletic policies and conducting break-out sessions with coaches.

Parents with their son or daughter must register at https://esko-ar.rschooltoday.com/ prior to the meeting.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE 2016-2017 SCHOOL YEARStudent athletes will not be allowed to participate in a sport until they have a completed, current physical on file in the athletic office. Please utilize the summer months to schedule an appointment with your family physician to have a physical completed. Physicals are good for three years from the date of the physical exam. Blank physical forms can be picked up in the high school office, athletic office or online www.esko.k12.mn.us under the “Ath-letics” tab. Keeping a copy of the physical for your records is a good idea before you hand in the completed original to the school. Please note, that if the sport is combined with Cloquet (boys soccer, swimming, boys and girls hockey, nordic and alpine skiing, wrestling, golf, tennis) then CHS needs a copy of all paperwork as well.

Esko Wrestler Qualifies For State!Congratulations to Esko High School Sophomore, Tate Olson, who qualified for MSHSL State Wrestling meet. Tate, a qualifier at 120 pounds, wrestled his first State match at Excel Energy Center in March.

Pictured are Esko members of the Cloquet-Esko wrestling team: (L to R) Mitch Borchardt (12), Tate Olson (10), Braden Senarighi (11), Casey Kulas (12), Jon Stracek (9), and Devan Arntson (11).

Sir B.A.R.D. (Breaching And Recon Device) The drive team (Left to Right: David Pyrlik, Dominic Carr, Matt Lyden, and Karl Habig) concentrating hard during a match.

Our team accepting the Industrial Design Award sponsored by General Motors.

SubZero Robotics- Team 5690 walked out of the Duluth Entertain-ment Convention Center on Satur-day, March 5th with grins upon our faces because of what we accom-plished during our three day compe-tition. All of the troubles from build season finally came together and we came out as finalists and an award winner. To get to this point, our drive team had to undergo eight qualifica-tion matches. During these matches, we had randomly selected alliance members working with us. After the matches, SubZero came out ranked third and we were given the opportu-nity to select our alliance of two other teams with us for the playoff rounds. We selected Team 2052- Knight-Krawler and Team 2227- Tigers to be our alliance partners. From up in the stands our fan section cheered on the drive team as we made it through the quarterfinals, semifinals, and we then found ourselves competing in the final rounds. We were up against DNA Robotics- Team 4009, Hawai-ian Kids- Team 359, and Mystery Machine- Team 6175 to win the whole regional. DNA Robotics and Hawaiian Kids are both experienced teams and we were happy to even have competed against them. We

sadly lost to them in the finals and we came out at second place. How-ever, we did not know until after that was done that we still had the oppor-tunity to go to St. Louis, Missouri for the FIRST Championship happening April 27th- 30th. Luckily, this is be-cause DNA Robotics and Hawaiian Kids both won awards that automati-cally got them into the competition at St. Louis. So, wild cards were then offered to the captain of the second place alliance, SubZero, and the first chosen alliance member, Team 2052- KnightKrawler. We were ecstatic to find this out and following this great news we received more than the news of attending St. Louis. SubZero was then awarded the Industrial Design Award sponsored by General Motors that celebrates form and function in an efficiently designed machine that effectively addresses the game chal-lenge. We are honored by this award and we could not be more grateful for the experience we are going to have at the FIRST Championship. There will be more than six hundred teams in attendance at this event and as a second year team we would never have seen this coming. In the world of FIRST, we have improved dramatically when compared to last

year as rookies because of the team growth we have expressed. During the competition, we worked along-side Team 2512- Duluth East Dare-devils in a collaboration on the Blue Devil Press. This press covers the entire Double DECCer that includes two regionals. SubZero covered the Lake Superior Regional, the one we were competing in. While, on the other hand, the Daredevils covered the Northern Lights Regional which they competed in. We wrote blog sto-ries and submitted multiple articles to the Duluth News Tribune. In re-sult, we not only improved in the as-pect of the robot, but we improved in marketing and media as well. We are thankful for the opportunity that the Daredevils presented to us to help with the BlueDevil Press and it even widened our horizons more during the competition. With St. Louis in mind, SubZero will be working hard to raise money to pay for the finan-cial need as the FIRST Champion-ship event will require busing, hotel stays, and food expenses. We will be hosting fundraising events and activities over the next few weeks, and we ask for your support as we endeavor to St. Louis to compete. If you would like to donate to Sub-Zero, please contact [email protected]. We also have a GoFundMe account set up at https://

www.gofundme.com/subzerorobot-ics. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated - your support truly means everything to SubZero! SubZero is hosting a chili feed on April 7th in the school cafeteria from 5:00-7:00 pm. The money raised will go directly to our trip for the FIRST Championship. There will be STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) activities, robot displays, and also displayed infor-mation about our team. We will also be accompanied by (not associated in this campaign) two other North-land teams in St. Louis: Duluth Denfeld DNA Robotics- Team 4009 and the Hermantown Talon Robot-ics- Team 5232. Congratulations to these teams! SubZero would like to thank Rockwell Automation, Minne-sota Power Foundation, Alan R. and Eleanor A. Syverson Scholarship Foundation, discoverpc.net - Com-puter Solutions Center, Lake Supe-rior Carl Perkins Consortium, and Lakehead Constructors Inc. for being our sponsors and the reason why we were able to compete in the regional. We could not be more proud and ex-cited for this achievement of going to St. Louis and could not thank the community enough for the immense support that has been given. Thank you, our success has been hugely be-cause of all of you.

Esko Music BoostersESKO MUSIC BOOSTERS MINUTES OF MEETING HELD ON 3/7/2016.

A meeting of the Esko Music Boosters was held in the band room on Monday, March 7, 2016. The meeting was called to order by President Lisa Stracek at 6:35 p.m.

In attendance were: Lisa Stracek, AnnaMarie Jokinen, Lisa Robinson, Matt Wade, Shari & Buzz Acker, Jeff Laundergan, DeeAnne Hoffman, Sara Omberg & Rich Mowers. The minutes from the meeting of February 1, 2016 were distributed. A motion to accept the minutes as written was made by Shari Acker. 2nd by Lisa Robinson. Motion carried.Choir Report – Matt Wade:

• Broadway Caberet was Sunday, March 13 at 3pm in the caf-eteria. The students are working hard and are excited. Matt will try not to schedule future events in March due to conflicts. Conflicts March 13 include traveling basketball teams, among others. Students that will miss the concert can make it up with assignments: 1) sing the concert with Mr. Wade, or 2) a special project.

• Music Contest took place on March 7 & 8. Concert Choir re-ceived a Superior Rating by all three (3) judges. Mr. Mowers was in attendance and was impressed with the choir. As was a judge Mr. Mowers spoke with.

• Tuesday, May 10 is the spring concert.Band Report – Rich Mowers:

• Jazz Sweetheart Dance was Monday, February 15. Rich was sick and couldn’t really hear or enjoy the performance. Those in attendance said it sounded good. Professional clinicians coaching the students during the performance is a good learn-ing opportunity, and a good environment to learn in. That’s the spirit of the event. One downside was the lack of dancers. That changed the atmosphere and affected the energy. For future concerts, we need to have a dance component. The students showed a lot of improvement from Holiday Concert. Maybe look at using a singer again. Another downside was (some) parent backlash on social media about the use of clinicians during the performance. Does this need to be addressed?

• The pep band has been busy, as they are every year. The stu-dents are troopers. Even the younger students have stepped up. Chad Stoskoph (AD) would like the pep band for the boys’ basketball state send-off on Tuesday (3/8) at 6:30pm. Hoops Club may make a donation for that performance. Any pep band donation could be used for end of the year/season party. Boys Basketball State – Wednesday, Friday (possible) & Saturday (possible). Girls Basketball Section – Thursday & Saturday (possible).

• Music Contest took place March 7 & 8. Jazz took on some challenging music and scored 39 out of 40. Rich Mowers felt good about the performance. The Esko choir was in the audi-

ence. Saxophone group scored 39 out of 40. Other performers include: bassoon solo, clarinet solo, woodwind trio and horn section. Seth Bergstedt was a star at the contest. Both choir & band had an outside accompanist join them for the contest. Senior High Band performed at 10am on 3/8. Jazz II is not ready for contest, but are working on other projects & items.

• Head of the Lakes Jazz Festival changed their dates this year to the weekend band leaves on their spring trip. The cost for the Jazz Festival has been going up. Rich is entertaining the idea of hiring a (professional) guest to come into school, rather than going back to the Jazz Festival. In past years, Jazz Festi-val was a good prep for the Jazz Band for contests.

• The band trip is all paid, except for 1 student. Music Boosters will need to refund money to some students who sold fruit, even though their trip was already paid in full. 41 students. 3 chaperones. The Broadway Show tickets were hand delivered. Rich has been meeting with the students. They have forms they need to read & sign, including: medical, code of conduct and things to bring/not to bring.

Old Business:• Final numbers aren’t yet available on the fruit fundraiser. 3

orders weren’t picked-up. We ordered too much grapefruit (9 boxes). Looking at options to sell the extra, or donate it. It’s the Music Boosters opinion that parents (students) are just willing to pay for the trip and are less interested in fundraising. One suggestion is marketing ahead of time (Esko Corner) for those residents that don’t have a student connection at the school, but would still like fruit. We also need more volunteer help with pick-up. Maybe make an incentive by putting money in their child’s account. Notification via e-mail & Canvas. Music Boost-ers will create a volunteer list at the 1st meeting of each school year.

• We received a $275 estimate/quote from Tracy Bockbrader for the ongoing & updatable plaque/trophy to go in our trophy case. Now we need to request an estimate/quote for the elec-tricity & wiring.

• Fine Arts Awards Night is Sunday, May 15. Music Boosters need to get the committee going.

New Business:• The Esko Community Education Advisory Council, along with

the Community Education Director, Elementary Principal and Elementary Parent Group (PIE) are asking Music Boosters to partner with them to replace the Esko School community sign. We are still seeking more information and clarification. Tabled until April meeting.

There being no further business, Lisa Robinson made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Sara Omberg. The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.Next meeting will be Monday, April 4, 2016.Respectfully submitted,Jeff LaunderganSecretary, Esko Music Boosters

HISTORY DAYOn Saturday, March 5, sixteen Esko students participated in the History Day Regional competition at UMD. Esko students designed exhibits, developed websites and prepared performances to share what they had learned about their chosen history topic related to this year’s theme of “Exploration, En-counter and Exchange in History”. National History Day creates opportunities for teachers and students to engage in real historical research. Students choose their topics and con-duct primary and secondary research. They then analyze and interpret what they have learned from their sources and present their work in original pa-pers, exhibits, performances, websites and documentaries. The program is geared to 6-12 graders. Esko had three groups of students qualify for the state competition to be held at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities on Sunday, May 1.Abigail Rud, Sophia Klaphake, Lilly Mae Rud and Maiya Klaphake quali-fied with their Senior Division performance on Jim Elliot.Samia Anderson, Ed Fuller and Eli Rud qualified with their Junior Division website on the Black Death: Sanitation.
