Winterquist Elementary News

By BRIAn HARKeR

*Open House- CancelledWith the building project mov-

ing along, we are monitoring the progress and looking at timelines. Once the project is completed, the custodial staff will need to come in and clean the classrooms and teaching spaces. Then the teach-ing staff will have to unpack their materials and supplies and prepare their classrooms for the upcoming school year. With so many variables and unknowns regarding the proj-

ect and timelines, we are going to cancel our Open House which was scheduled for Thursday, August 31. We know this is disappointing. Our open house event is an exciting chance for your family to meet your child’s teacher and talk with family friends. We apologize for any in-convenience.

Building projectWith the end of August fast ap-

proaching, the excitement of a new school year begins to set in. Our elementary building has gone through a great deal of construction this summer. The first area that was upgraded were the univents. Many of the univents were original to the building and were at least 20 years past their expected usefulness. New rooftop air handling units were in-stalled that will move air through-

out the buildings. This new HVAC system is more efficient and will provide more fresh air. We also up-dated plumbing, sinks and cabinetry in the the elementary classrooms.

early Release schedule for the 2017-18 school year

Esko Public School District will continue with the 1 hour early re-lease for students each Wednesday of the school year. Just a reminder that on Wednesdays throughout the school year, students will be released 1 hour early from school at 2:15p.m. instead of 3:10 in the elementary and 3:15 in the high school.

First Day The first day of school always

brings feelings of excitement and nervousness to all that are entering

the building. To help relieve any nervous feelings, we will follow the same morning procedures for students in grades 1-6. When the children get off the bus, they are to go to the playground (or cafeteria in case of inclement weather). From there, they will be met by staff and will be organized into their assigned rooms. Parents of kindergarten stu-dents will receive a letter informing them of the details regarding the opening days of school.

new FamiliesWinterquist Elementary extends

a warm welcome to all new fami-lies to our community. Parents play a large role in the educational op-portunities offered throughout our school. If you need information or would like a tour of the school please feel free to call 879-3361.

summer projectsThe school has been under construction all

summer. The entire elementary school and part of the high school were torn apart to make room for the new duct work for the new air handling units. During the tear down of the ceilings we encountered many challenges. Our construction teams have been able to work through the chal-lenges and have continued to make progress. We are very hopeful that the project will be complet-ed on time. By the time you read this article you will know if it was done on time or not.

When the project is completed we will have

new air handling units bringing in fresh air. We will have new heating units that are substantially more efficient and will save the district in ener-gy costs. The classrooms in the elementary will have new water lines to them and new valves and faucets. We have also replaced our very old lights with all new LED lights that again will save us money in energy costs and in maintenance costs.. Modern equipment and updated plumbing will be in place and should enable the community to use this facility for many years to come.

I want to thank the School Board for having the vision to address the issues that were present in the older buildings. I want to thank the custo-dial staff for their extra efforts in getting things moved this summer and working tirelessly to get the school ready for the first day of school. I would also like to thank the teachers and sup-port staff for working through the challenges that come with a construction project.

new Families Welcome to the Esko School District. I still

remember being new to the community and the school. I can still remember the first day of school for my own children like it was yesterday. It was a nervous time for my wife and I, and yet very exciting. I anticipate that you will find out the same things that I did those first years.

I believe you will find that the teaching staff is first rate. The staff is very committed to seeing your child succeed. I believe you will find that the other staff members are incredibly friendly and very professional in how they do their jobs. I know that my boys were greeted everyday with a smile as they boarded the bus, which was com-forting to us.

I believe you will find other families that have the similar interests and will end up spending a lot of time with them at games and other school events. I believe your child will find wonderful friends that they will spend time with them as they learn and play together.

I also believe that your child will make new friends and will be an Eskomo forever!

A new display featuring furniture, artifacts, photos and other objects of interest from Esko’s churches opened this summer at the Esko Historical Society’s museum com-plex next to the Post Office. In this July 16 photo, a Cloquet visitor, David Grund, left, was provided a museum tour by society member Reynold Sunnarborg. The museum also has a second new display this year, “Guns and Knives, Essential Tools of the Pioneers.” The muse-um is open from 2 to 5 p.m. each Sunday from June through August and any time by appointment. Emily started working in Cool Kids at the end of June. She loves going on the summer field trips with the kids. She is a graduate of Cloquet senior high school and she graduated from Northwestern with a degree in Journalism/Communi-cations.

Emily lives with her husband Dar-rell in Cloquet with their twin girls who are 2 ½ years old. Avery and Quinn are very busy and super fun! She had lived in the twin cities area for five years, and is now excited to have moved back to the area where she grew up.

She loves to sleep when she can (having twin 2 ½ year old girls will do that to a person). She also loves to cook, bake, and do arts and crafts with her children.

Her favorite colors are pink and green and her favorite food type is Mexican. She would eat chips and salsa for every meal if she could. One thing very few people know about Emily is that she has never been on a roller coaster.

We welcome Emily to Esko Com-munity Education!

Say hello to Emily Davey!

Free and Reduced Lunch InformationDear Parent/Guardian:

Our school provides healthy meals each day. Breakfast costs $1.10 all grades; lunch costs $2.30 grs. K-6, $2.40 grs. 7-12.

Your children may qualify for free or reduced-price school meals. To apply, complete the enclosed Ap-plication for Educational Benefits following the instructions. A new application must be submitted each year. At public schools, your appli-cation also helps the school qualify for education funds and discounts.

State funds help to pay for re-duced-price school meals, so all students who are approved for ei-ther free or reduced-price school meals will receive school meals at no charge. State funds also help to pay for breakfasts for kindergarten students, so all participating kinder-garten students receive breakfasts at no charge.

Return your completed Applica-tion for Educational Benefits to: ESKO PUBLIC SCHOOLS,Attn Dawn, 2 East Hwy 61, PO Box 10, Esko, MN 55733

Who can get free school meals? Children in households participat-ing in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Min-nesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) or Food Distribution Pro-gram on Indian Reservations (FD-PIR), and foster, homeless, migrant and runaway children can get free school meals without reporting household income. Or children can get free school meals if their house-hold income is within the maximum income shown for their household size on the instructions.

I get WIC or Medical Assis-tance. Can my children get free school meals? Children in house-holds participating in WIC or Med-ical Assistance may be eligible for free school meals. Please fill out an application.

Who should I include as house-hold members? Include yourself and all other people living in the household, related or not (such as grandparents, other relatives, or friends).

May I apply if someone in my household is not a u.s. citizen? Yes. You or your children do not have to be U.S. citizens for your children to qualify for free or re-duced-price school meals.

What if my income is not always the same? List the amount that you normally get. If you normally get overtime, include it, but not if you get overtime only sometimes. For seasonal work, write in the total an-nual income.

Will the information I give be checked? Yes, and we may also ask you to send written proof.

How will the information be kept? Information you provide on the form, and your child’s approval for school meal benefits, will be protected as private data. For more information see the back page of the Application for Educational Bene-fits.

If I don’t qualify now, may I ap-ply later? Yes. Please complete an application at any time if your in-come goes down, your household size goes up, or you start getting SNAP, MFIP or FDPIR benefits.

Please provide the information requested about children’s racial identity and ethnicity, which helps to make sure we are fully serving our community. This information is not required for approval of school meal benefits.

If you have other questions or need help, call 218-879-2969 op-tion 3.

Sincerely, Aaron Fischer, Supt. of Schools

sports Hall of Fameseeks nominations

The Esko Sports Alliance welcomes public nominations of candi-dates for induction into the new Sports Alliance Hall of Fame.

Nine charter members were selected by the Sports Alliance executive board a year ago with the understanding that future selections would be based on a public process. The charter members were inducted this past February at a dinner with a capacity crowd at the Buffalo House Junction.

Project chairman Davis Helberg said this year’s nominees will be screened by the executive board before a list of finalists is submitted to an awards committee composed of two Sports Alliance representa-tives, Athletic Director Chad Stoskopf, two coaches (at least one of whom shall be a former coach), a member of the School Board and a member of the general public.

Deadline for receipt of nominations is October 31. Nomination forms and candidate criteria are available at the athletic director’s of-fice.

Helberg said the new honorees will be announced in December, fol-lowed by an induction dinner at a date to be determined.

Exceptional athletes and teams are not eligible for consideration un-til they have been out of high school for at least 10 years while coaches and athletic directors are not eligible until five years after their service in Esko.

Last year’s charter members were Les Knuti, Walter Maunu, the 1955 basketball team, Harold Bergstedt, Eleanor Randels, Darrell McKibbon, Anna (Townsend) Tool, Gina (Perich) Zezulka and Mi-chelle (Maunu) Peterson.

you want a slice of pIe?

The start of school begins a change of seasons- Autumn colors, pumpkin pie spice latte, nights cool enough to see your breath, apple pies, football, soccer, and volley-ball games and, of course, the back-packs hung at the door for the start of the 2017 school year.

One way to make the fall even more meaningful for your family is to become an essential part of your child’s education by attending PIE meetings and volunteering for school activities.

We welcome parents to join us around our table on Sept 11th at 6:30 in the Elementary library. Childcare will be available. Come and hear about how much this group contrib-utes to the school, have some fun with amazing parents and teach-ers, and maybe you will get to taste some of our parents favorite pie rec-ipes. We can’t wait to see you there!
