project timeframeSeptember 2013 - June 2016
the partnership between the eidgenössische technische Hochschule Zürich (etH), State Secretariat of economic Affairs (SeCo) and inter-American Development Bank (iDB) for integrated urban sustainability in Colombia is an applied research project that will run from September 2013 – June 2016. it was initiated by etH with the support of SeCo and in collaboration with iDB.
iDB launched the emerging and Sustainable Cities initiative (eSCi) to help intermediate cities make more informed planning decisions and take immediate actions towards smart and sustainable urban development in latin America and the Caribbean. the focus is on cities with populations of 100,000 to 2 million, fast growing economies and urban growth.
this partnership builds on the ongoing collaboration initiated in August 2012 by etH Chair of Architecture and Urban Design of Prof. Alfredo Brillembourg & Prof. Hubert Klumpner with iDB eSCi.
We aim to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for one emerging Colombian city within the eSCi network. Based on the eSCi Action Plans, local Development Plans and Swiss research expertise, we will work in Barranquilla, Colombia. to do so, we have formed a trans-disciplinary research team, which will work in collaboration with SeCo experts, iDB specialists, local government agencies, local universities, architects and civil society organizations.
the outcome will be an innovative and sustainable urban prototype that contributes to an integrated urban regeneration strategy of a specific site. the urban prototype will include the implementation of innovative technologies, ecological systems, and construction methods. it will address the city’s most pressing urban, social, and environmental challenges. in parallel, our research team will explore the application of integrated urban sustainability and conduct a trans-disciplinary teaching program. the project will contribute to a pre-existing toolbox of urban prototypes, which can be scaled and replicated in other cities within the esci network.
Currently, the project is in the launching phase. this involves concluding contracting arrangements between the partners, mobilizing etH resources, and establishing working relationships with local stakeholders. through the research and development phases we will procure and deploy resources to develop an urban prototype, conduct analysis and contribute to the toolbox. During the phasing out, we will hand over the design for an urban prototype to a local team of architects and engineers. We will ensure coaching and monitoring plans are in place and that project has been transferred effectively (until June 2016).

the Swiss Federal institute of technology (etH Zurich) is a state university, mandated to conduct research, development and innovation. With the financial contribution of SeCo, we set up an interdisciplinary group of researchers and experts. our team consists of the Department of Architecture and Urban Design, Department of Civil, environmental and geomatic engineering, and Department of environmental Systems Science. our problem oriented research will be translated into integrated urban prototypes for Barranquilla, Colombia.
our competencies are:
Architecture, landscape and Urban Design• Urban design of marginalized and
disconnected urban zones • landscape design of public spaces
and green areas• Social infrastructure for cultural,
educational and recreational uses (music, sport, community centers, school or learning centers)
• low cost housing typologies and strategies
• Sustainable and energy efficient building and construction systems
mobility and Urban transportation modes• Alternative systems and modes of
public transportation (cable-car)• Soft modes of transportation
(pedestrian and bicycles)
Water – energy – Food nexus• renewable energy systems and
environmentally viable infrastructure • energy, water and food security• Alternative food systems (urban
farming and hydroponics)

the project is composed of three methodological tracks that provide complementary means of contributing to esci:
a. Development of an innovative sustainable prototype
b. analysis of integrated urban sustainability strategies
c. trans-disciplinary learning platform
track a: Development of an innovative sustainable prototype
As starting point, we will investigate the case study city’s key urban, social, economic, and environmental challenges and potentials. We will map the priorities underlined in the eSCi Action Plan and Development Plan onto the city.
A priority perimeter of intervention will be defined in collaboration with local authorities. For this specific site, an urban prototype will be developed and designed. it will be informed by applied research on integrated urban sustainability and a trans-disciplinary teaching program, both in collaboration with a top Colombian university.
We will conduct fieldwork, collect data, and develop tools of comprehension
track b: analysis of integrated urban sustainability strategies
leading experts from various disciplines in the field of sustainability will explore the conceptual framework of sustainable integrated development. this track will seek to address the key issues at stake. What are the criteria needed to define urban sustainability? What are the processes, structures, and means
prOject metHODOlOgy
needed to attain integrated sustainable development?
the analysis will be structured through a series of lectures, workshops and seminars by researchers and international practitioners. results will be published in two consecutive issues of the journal S.l.U.m. lab (Sustainable living Urban model).
track B will enable our design team in track A to incorporate an informed understanding of integrated urban design.
track c: trans-disciplinary learning program
the teaching program will build upon our pre-existing curriculum incorporating design studios, field visits, elective courses, and lecture series. During the field visits, students from etH will engage with students from the partner university in Colombia.
in coordination with the trans-disciplinary lab (tdlab) the teaching program will be supplemented with three-week summer schools. Students from multiple disciplines and from the partner local university will participate, bringing together young talent from the architectural, engineering and environmental systems departments. Summer schools will run in Colombia and Switzerland.
the teaching activities will provide a unique opportunity for european and Colombian students to train together in zones of high urban vulnerability and enable transfers of knowledge between Colombia and Switzerland.

our point of departure for research is architecture’s failure to define informal urbanism and the effects of its urban growth. We have worked in cities in latin America for the last 20 years, investigating the urban, social, environmental, and economic challenges of marginalized areas and risk zones withing these cities.
as a response to these challenges we have developed a toolbox of innovative urban prototypes - social infrastructure. these include: metro-cable, Dry toilet scheme, vertical gymnasium, music school, growing House typology and street children’s shelter.
the project we will develop for Barranquilla will be added to the pre-existing toolbox of sustainable prototypes to be diffused within the eSCi cities.
