Energy is a hot topic in the media today, it is a major cost issue heavily influenced by geopolitical changes at international level. The government plays a very important role, through regulations, taxes and subsidies.

It’s crucial that we keep on top of energy issues, which has not always been easy as such matters are being issued on various levels. So everyone is searching for partners to address today’s energy issues, and meet the challenges that lie ahead.

In addition, we’re all keen to pursue more environmentally friendly sources of energy, and we must think in terms of sustainability and renewable energy. Finally, energy suppliers and energy consumers must work together to optimize energy consumption and keep energy affordable.

At Energy Forum, all these angles will be discussed in seminars, forums, plenary sessions and, last but not least, at the fairground. The emphasis will be on gathering and sharing knowledge, and on networking.

Energy is indispensible for everyone and deserves our full attention during this crucial two-day energy event.

INFRABEL During the Energy Forum seminars, I’d like to learn more about ’third-party access’, especially energy market regulators or lawyers specialised in this field might be interesting.

The event is also an excellent opportunity to learn from testimonials on completed projects, as they’re a great way to discover something new that you could potentially apply later at your own company. n

Johan Liekens, Energy Coordinator,

BP Chemicals

To ensure that Energy Forum becomes the event for the energy market, it is important to keep in touch with key issues. That is why we are currently mapping the needs of large energy consumers by performing in depth interviews. Our goal is to come up with a fresh and modern concept that, supported by the entire market, meets the interests of professional energy consumers.

MUSTS FOR VISITORS

BP CHEMICALS The government is trying to encourage companies to use energy more sparingly. But which subsidies currently exist and have to be requested? There’s certainly an urgent need for information regarding energy subsidies.

Energy Forum brings companies offering the latest energy technologies and developments under one roof. This makes it very easy to quickly assess the different energy solutions available, including the investment optimisation and payback period. One of the latest trends in the energy market is the Organic Rankine Cycle. More and more companies are trying to process their own electricity by using this thermodynamic process. I’m looking forward to exploring this topic with other Energy Managers during a network opportunity at the event - this would make Energy Forum a successful event for me. n

UMICORE The energy issue is universal, but it is viewed in different ways.

Energy Forum is an opportunity to bring the different branches of the industry together and create a type of benchmarking, from which ideas and solutions ideas can be formed. n

JANSSEN PHARMACEUTICAThe impact of promoting energy manage-ment awareness among employees is often underestimated, and this can certainly be highlighted at Energy Forum.

In addition, we’re very interested in testimonials on proven technologies and ways to address energy issues. It’s a useful way to quickly judge whether something would work for us or not.Like most energy managers, we welcome insight to any new developments regarding regulations, and one topic that we’re particularly interested in is ISO 50001. n

IKEA BELGIUM

For a company like IKEA that has several branches in Belgium, moni-toring, controlling and benchmarking energy are essential elements of energy management. It’s important that we continuously measure, store, identify and evaluate the energy consumption of our buildings.

At Energy Forum we hope to find solutions for integrating various building management systems (at national level for our different sites), which will result in a smooth and continuous benchmarking process. The event is also a good opportunity to exchange experiences with other companies. Case studies where we can see the return of specific energy related investments would be an excellent inspiration. n

A BROAD SPECTRUM OF PLAYERS 1 / What is OVED? What are the objectives?

The aim of OVED, the Belgian consultative platform for energy experts, is to defend the interests of its members before the main stakeholders (i.e. the government and other associations). Our members must sign a code of ethics and act independently of energy suppliers and product vendors. Our members are consultants active in three areas: efficient use of energy for industry, renewable energy and low-energy building. OVED aims to continue to meet the clear need for high-quality training.

2 / What do you think are the needs in terms of energy and what kind of solutions can Energy Forum offer?

There are many needs but OVED is working on three main areas:· Low-energy building towards nearly zero-energy building. · Renewable energy technology is evolving very quickly.· Ongoing developments in energy-efficient production.

For Energy Forum, the main expectation is for the training programme to address those three areas. Today, the energy market has a broad spec-trum of players, including a variety of businesses, suppliers and service providers. Besides offering a strong substantive programme, Energy Forum should attract a representative sample of those companies.

3 / Should Energy Forum focus more on financial issues or other issues?

OVED does not deny the fact that there are financial issues in the energy market. However, for OVED, the financial aspect is equally important as the technical one. From the consultants’ point of view, it is obvious that having the most up-to-date knowledge is vital. Expertise and knowledge management are concepts that should be embraced by each expert.

4 / What will make Energy Forum a success for you?

1. Having a strong seminar programme supported by stakeholders and associations.2. A large turnout of quality visitors.3. Participation of innovative players on the exhibition floor.

Energy Forum can count on the support of more than twenty trade federations.

These represent exhibitors as well as visitors.

The fast-moving energy market needs a platform where energy suppliers and energy related companies can exchange their knowledge and expertise. Energy Forum is the right place to meet the largest energy consumers who are looking for ways to optimise their energy consumption and efficiency.

PLATFORM FOR EXHIBITORS

Jean-François Potelle, Managing Director,

Dapesco

DAPESCO Energy is a domain that is in constant evolution. It is important for a player like DAPESCO to focus on the expectations of it users, the technical achievements, the new financing opportunities, the evolution trends and the statutory opportunities.

For us, it is important to follow the conferences of the invited experts. It would also be of interest to set up round tables focusing on the needs of the users, on funding issues and on European regulation-related projects. We need to meet buyers specialized in “utilities”. We need to meet maintenance experts, real estate agents, people in charge of energy issues and local and international experts. n

LYDIAN LAWYERS Energy is an essential part of society. The liberalisation of the energy market has not had the desired effect, so it’s crucial that the government develops a long-term vision – a ‘master plan’ for energy.

Besides the need for unfailing supply and sustainability, the predictability of energy prices is increasingly important to large companies. Everything indicates that energy prices will continue to rise, but assessing prices on medium-to-long-term use will provide users with a better insight to their cost structures.

Moreover, price, unfailing supply and sustainability cannot be viewed as separate topics. The challenge is to com-bine these when debating energy, which will lead to more affordable and rational energy consumption. These market circumstances will further require regulatory anticipation and sound contractual support.

BOOK NOW (see page 12)

Through active participation at conferences and debates during the Energy Forum, we were able to explain the importance and the benefits of signing an Energy Performance Contract.

Technical and financial directors of both public and private sector, as well as facility and sustainability managers of industries were often amazed to see that energy efficient solutions do exist, without additional cost implications, but with guaran-teed energy savings. n
