A mix of generic and technical skills is crucial management, leadership, communication, entrepreneurship. adaptability, co-ordination skills systems analysis (primacy of design), holistic approach, technical inter-disciplinary knowledge (engineering, electro mechanics, esp. science) financial approach (ROI) languages

short term demands exceed capacities (e.g. buildings/energy efficiency)

general labour market weaknesses (lack of scientists and engineers, languages, multiskilling recquirements, …)

Attractiveness of the sector

The complexity of these skills increases with the complexity of the jobs


Schools need to consider offering entirely new study fields and majors due to technology development.

Up to now, we identified in Belgium about 45 programs providing environmental technologies learning contents.


Without suitably qualified and skilled green workers and without a better balance

between job supply and demand, companies will not be able to fully exploit

their green growth potential.

Why a competency model?

The Energy Industry Competency Building Block model is designed to provide a consistent definition of the competencies required to work in the industry. Themodel builds from basic fundamentals to more industry and career specific competencies.

The Competency Model consists of stacked tiers increasing in specificity and specialization as the pyramid ascends. Each tier is divided into blocksrepresenting content or the skills, knowledge, abilities and other factors that are essential to successful performance in the industry.

Not all competencies are required for all of the jobs in the energy business; for example, all competencies on the lower tiers are not necessarily needed to achieve the competencies needed on upper level tiers.
