The event is set to attract major technology developers, licensores, and contractors to exhibit their offerings.

Technology TrendsThe event is set to attract major technology providers and contractors to exhibit their offerings and to participate in the conference sessions, to share their knowledge and expectations about market trends in the region.

“The chemicals industry overcame the crisis much better and faster than expected. People are looking to improve efficiency and, naturally, to save on operational expenditures,” says Jana Kurzawa, marketing manager,

Endress+Hauser Instruments International. “New process technologies and catalysts are only one aspect which has to be taken into account. Process instrumentation which is maintenance friendly and provides clear diagnostic messages plays a substantial role to save cost in daily operation and therefore to get a faster return on invest,” Kurzawa adds.

“Those countries which do not have the same feedstock advantage as the Middle East will either go on developing processes based on bio-feedstock or focus on

specialty chemicals which offer added value functionality,” notes Kurzawa.

Environmental legislations are also playing an important role in directing the technology trends which will make the biggest impact for many refiners in 2011. “Refiners today are struggling to keep pace with growing fuel demands and tighter global emissions standards due to an increase in heavier sour crudes and rising sulphur levels,” says Süleyman Özmen, VP licensing, Shell Global Solutions. “Uncertainty around future specifications of sulphur in marine or bunker fuels continues to stimulate interest in evaluating options to convert fuel oil to lighter high quality lower sulphur products,” he explains.

The type of the feedstock used within refineries and petrochemical plants is also playing a role in determining the trend. “We are noticing increased interest in our LC-FINING technology for upgrading heavy oil by hydrocracking of vacuum residues related to increased heavy crude exploration projects in the Middle East,” says Gerrit Polhaar, technology marketing area manager - Middle East & Africa, Chevron Lummus Global.

InnovationThe Middle East’s rise in prominence for downstream sectors has seen a shift in focus by technology providers aiming to tailor product offerings to suit local clients’ needs. “We are being pushed to increase the confidence and reliability of our temperature measurement solutions for critical applications,” says Robert

The demand for cleaner fuels and increasingly strict regulations on refi ned petroleum products are requiring refi ners to adapt to new operating environments. In addition to these pressures, greater use of heavy crude requires innovative technologies to remove contaminants from petroleum fractions. DuPont Sustainable Solutions helps refi ners address these demands and meet the “triple bottom line” targets of improving safety and reducing environmental footprint, while maximizing profi tability. Through its proprietary technologies and services—Belco Clean Air Technologies, Stratco Alkylation Technology and IsoTherming Hydroprocessing technology—DuPont offers integrated solutions that can lead to more effi cient operations, lower costs, and a smaller environmental footprint. DuPont operates ten sulfuric acid manufacturing plants and is recognised in the sulfuric acid industry as a leader in technology, operations and maintenance expertise. To expand upon these capabilities, DuPont recently announced the signing of a defi nitive agreement to acquire MECS, a leading global provider of process technology, proprietary specialty equipment, and technical services for the sulfuric acid industry. The acquisition will expand the DuPont clean technologies portfolio with complementary science-based offerings. During his presentation, Ronan Goff, Business Manager, Europe and the Middle East, will introduce DuPont offerings and technologies that are designed to improve safety management systems, asset productivity, capital effectiveness and the reliability of sulfuric acid plants.

Torgerson, marketing and corporate accounts manager, Gayesco International, a quality manufacturer of temperature measurement instruments specialising in multipoint thermocouple systems, tubeskins and other related applications.

Özmen adds that the fact Middle Eastern refiners are now providing significant product volumes – set to increase further in the coming decade - to Europe, refiners must comply with 10 ppm sulphur product specifications even when it is not required for their own domestic market. “Additionally, although still under debate, bunker fuel legislation is anticipated to tighten around 2020. This change in regulation would open up a tremendous opportunity for refiners who can adapt,” he says.

ME-TECH 2011 delegates will be presenting cutting edge technologies and innovations geared to help downstream operators to run their plants more efficiently and safely. “In the short future,

Elliott Group will release a compact high efficiency impulse turbine delivering superior reliability for direct drive un-spared equipment applications,” reveals Wendy Wang, marketing engineer, EMA at Elliott Group. “This turbine’s impulse design provides robustness over traditional reaction type designs by eliminating the need for very close tolerance seals which can have a history of

degrading over time,” she adds. From its part, Gayesco aims to take the

opportunity at ME-TECH 2011 to introduce its new service for its in situ verification of its reactor thermocouple assemblies. “The very best place to verify the accuracy of the thermocouples is after they have been installed. We have developed a process and equipment package that allows this to be done accurately, quickly, and safely in the field,” says Torgerson.

Meanwhile, Endress+Hauser will be introducing its first real 4-20mA 2-wire mass flow meter to the market. “Our new Levelflex for Interface measurement is the worldwide first combination of a guided wave radar and a capacitance probe,” says Kurzawa. “Both instruments - the 2-wire Coriolis and the new Levelflex series have the same concept regarding HMI (human-machine-interface), same smart diagnostics (according NE107) and same housings.”
