Dear Parents and Friends of ASD:
This past week the PTA held their first meeting of the school year. Thanks to all the parents and teachers who attended that meeting. This year’s executive members were elected. They are:
-Colette Le Gall – President -Madhumita Sengupta – Vice President -Ferol Ntuba –Secretary -David Fuller – Treasurer -Mildred Tanwi – Vice treasurer -Thérèse Vandenbon - Events Chairperson -Khadidiatou Tandiang – Events Chairperson
Congratulations to everyone. I look forward to working with you this school year. The parent teacher association is a vital part of a school. The PTA not only contributes to school events but it also acts as an important liaison between the parent community and the school. Without an open line of communication, it is difficult for us to know what exactly are the concerns and issues of importance for the parent community. To better promote communication with the family community and the school, the PTA will be sponsoring its first morning coffee with me during the second week of November. It will be a chance for us to chat informally about things that are meaningful to you. I also want to thank the mothers who spent this morning preparing the Hallowe’en decorations. They look fantastic! The reaction of the kindergarten and pre-k students when they came out of their classroom for break was priceless! Edward LANGLAIS Director High School Principal ASD

This week’s column focuses on College Planning for this year’s 10th graders.
Our current 10th graders are the class of 2019 which means you are less than 3 short years away from graduation. This list will get you focused on the college planning process:
Take the PSAT 10 in February or March. It provides valuable feedback on your college readiness and a free, personalized plan to help you start getting ready for the SAT and for college.
Be in attendance and listen carefully when Mrs. Fuller presents information to the class (which will be in October). She will be discussing course schedules and any prerequisites for Advanced Placement (A.P) classes offered in your Junior and Senior year.
Go on-line and begin researching colleges. Think about what field of study you are interested in and check out the colleges that may fit you best.
Participate in school activities or volunteer efforts. Extracurricular activities can help you develop time-management skills and enrich your high school experience.
Mrs. Fuller will be meeting with the 10th grade class in October to begin a discussion about their high school career and beyond.
THE NEXT SAT DATE IS NOVEMBER 5TH.
FINAL DEADLINE: OCTOBER 7th.

students collect candy in the fall tradition of
Halloween.
The PTA requests your support! Please
have your student bring a bag of candy to

on sleep on weekends. Ideally, teens should try to go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning. You can help by reminding your teen before bedtime to turn off their phones and limit video games and TV.
Take Attendance Seriously
Teens should take a sick day if they have a fever, are nauseated, vomiting, or
have diarrhea. Otherwise, it’s important that they arrive at school on time
every day, because having to catch up with class work, projects, test, and
homework can be stressful and interfere with learning.

Fragility is a solid piece of work, who gets easily hurt, when any one tries to compliment her. When the real bully Rudy, comes in sight, fragility realizes that she doesn’t always have to cry, and things changed for better for everybody.
Such a great lesson on self-esteem.

In 8th Grade science, students worked with electronic components, measuring devices, discovered how to create complete circuits and how to identify series, parallel, and short circuits. They observed the momentary flow of electrons -“Electric current”. Students acquired knowledge of electricity as an energy source that can be controlled and understood using components such as lamps, resistors, capacitors, diodes, light emitting diodes and measuring devices such as voltmeter, ammeter & ohmmeter. They are now able to draw schematic diagrams of circuits with different components and can build their own circuit and measure voltage drop between the components. The subject matter is universally interesting and fascinating along with the joy and satisfaction of discovering new circuits were shared by everyone in the class.

In 7th Grade Science, students have learned about elements and discussed about the periodic table. They are now able to identify some of the elements composed in a substance by analyzing the chemical formula. Students did a couple of investigations and understood that any chemical reaction will change initial substance into a new substance. In a recent investigation, students explored and concluded that gas is a matter that has mass and occupies space and gas can be compressed and expanded. Students also explored expansion and contraction of solids, liquids and gases. They are now able to explain the phenomenon in terms of kinetic energy – ‘the motion of particles’. We are getting prepared to go into the law of conservation of energy that says “Energy can neither be created nor destroyed”.
