OPEN HIGH SCHOOL COURSES Teacher contact: Mrs DowneyWhen there is insufficient demand for a particular Board Course at the school, students may request to do the course by Open High School (Languages) or Distance Education (courses other than languages). There is a restriction on the number of students who can access this mode of learning. Courses are delivered by correspondence and students are not in face-to-face contact with their teacher. While the standard of the lessons is excellent, Open High School and Distance Education courses are not encouraged. This is solely because students attempting the courses must work independently and can easily fall behind in their assignments. In order to succeed in Open High School courses, students must be motivated and organised. All applications are considered by a school selection panel before being forwarded.

SATURDAY SCHOOL OF COMMUNITY LANGUAGES Teacher contact: Mrs DowneyStudents wishing to study their Community Language may do so through the Saturday Schools of Community Languages. These courses are run at various centres (usually high schools throughout the metropolitan area). These courses may only be taken by students of the specific language background.Further details and application forms may be obtained from the Careers Adviser.

VOLUNTEERING Teacher contact: Mrs GrayAll Year 9 and 10 students are being encouraged to participate in the Premier’s Student Volunteering Awards program so that they will be able to receive official recognition for the work they already do within the school and the community. All employers and TAFE and University applications indicate the value and importance of students having evidence of their involvement in their own community, by volunteering. This valuable program enables official recognition to be given for such community involvement. All students can access the website through their student portal (“other sites”), providing them and their parents with all the information they need to begin to log their hours. It is vital, however, that the

parent/carer permission slip is filled out and returned to Mrs Gray in Room 15. Each student is responsible for printing the log sheets and having her hours of volunteering recorded and verified by a supervisor. She is also able to log her hours on- line. These sheets must be returned to Mrs Gray who will then verify the hours on- line in order for them to be officially recognised. There are many different volunteering activities which students may participate in to gain their Certificates. Within the school, the SCIP program fits the bill, as does the Duke of Edinburgh Service component, peer mentoring, carnival helpers, choral festival performances etc. Each year we actively promote the Red Shield Appeal.CONTACT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
