Season Preview

Based upon the end of Fall Semester 2009

Welcome to the 2010 Lacrosse Season where we anticipate another fun year of lacrosse at Trabuco Hills. The team returns ten players from the previous season where the girls won a team high 14 games. Joining the returning lettermen will be ten additional players who are poised to improve upon last season’s success. Trabuco looks to play a very challenging schedule as nine of the fi fteen scheduled games are against 2009 playoff teams, which includes Orange County Finalist Foothill and Semifi nalist El Toro (both schools are in the highly competitive Sea View League).

On the defensive side of the fi eld, the Mustangs will look to the leadership of defensive players Brittani Nagy (Second Team All-SVL), Lauren Thews, and Jess Tveit. All girls return with a signifi cant amount of experience from last year. The team’s defense will be solidifi ed by the added depth of Varsity newcomers Sarah Bacopulos, Ashley Brewer, and Rachel Lansner. Junior Jessie Vuozzo will bring her experience as a successful Water Polo Goalie to Trabuco’s goal circle this season.

The midfi eld will be much deeper and quicker this season as returning players Chelsea Martin, Lizzie Moore (Second Team All-SVL), Kayla Heaviside, Taylor Nunez, and Lexi Witkin are joined by Danielle Leong, Hope Dodd, and Jessie Papageorge’s. This added depth will allow our starters a few minutes of rest enabling our team to play at the highest level for the entire fi fty minutes.

Finally, the offensive side of the fi eld will be led by Varsity returners Veigh Redwine (First Team All-SVL) and Morgan Chaney (First Team All-SVL). Together they combined for over ninety goals as Juniors. Joining the attack will be Varsity newcomers Sohee Ki, Stephanie Keider, and Hannah Redwine who are expected to be large contributors in the settle offense.

With many experienced players and the addition of newcomers who have worked extremely hard in the offseason, this year’s lacrosse season looks to be quite exciting as we will challenge Foothill, El Toro, Northwood, and Woodbridge in the competitive Sea View League.

What is Girls Lacrosse?

The objective of the defense is to keep the offense from scoring by causing

turnovers with disruptive defense or legal checks on their opponent’s stick, intercepting passes, or forcing

poor shots. Aggressive physical contact is not permitted.

Defense.

Lacrosse is a fast-paced game involving good passing and running to maintain

possession of the ball. Cradling is when the player runs down the fi eld while having possession of the ball. The objective

of the team on offense is to move the ball down the fi eld by cradling or passing to open teammates with the ultimate

purpose of creating an open shot on goal.

Offense.

History of the Game. Lacrosse may be the fi rst sport in North America, introduced by Native Americans as early as the fi fteenth century. The sport would be played with goals spaced miles apart with thousands of participants. Modern-day lacrosse was traditionally an East Coast sport, but has seen a great deal of growth at the high school and collegiate levels across the country.

Purpose of the Game. Using a stick to throw the ball into the opponent’s goal. The team with the most goals wins the game.

Length of the Game. High school games are fi fty minutes in length, divided into two twenty-fi ve minute halves. Halftime may be no longer than ten minutes. Teams switch sides for the second half. Overtime may be played when agreed upon by the local governing board.

The Start of a Game. A game begins with a draw at the center of the fi eld between two players. Draws occur at the start of each half and after a scored goal. Only one player may be allowed inside the circle for the draw and four additional players are allowed to move around the circle prior to the umpire’s whistle.

The Field. The dimensions of a lacrosse fi eld are between 110-120 yards in length and 60-70 yards wide. Restraining lines divide the fi eld into thirds, and only seven players from each team are allowed on the goal side of the restraining line. The goalie does not count towards the team’s total of seven. Offsides is called when a team has too many players over the restraining line and this foul may be called on the offense or defense. The goal is six feet tall and six feet wide. Only the goalie may enter the goal circle to block a shot. The eight-meter arc prevents defenders from standing in front of the goal unless an offensive player is within a stick’s length of the defensive player. The arc is lined with hash marks used to space players during penalties. A free shot is administered when a foul is committed within the arc.

The twelve-meter fan (semicircle) is used to administer minor fouls and spread out a team’s offense. The circle in the center of the fi eld is where the draw is taken. Typically, two teams compete with eleven players and one goalie per team. Traditionally, there are three defenders, fi ve midfi elders, and three attack players. The attack (originally referred to as fi rst, second, and third home) are responsible for setting up a team’s offense, but are also the fi rst line of defense after a missed shot or turnover. Midfi elders (attack wings are closest to the opposition’s goal, the center takes the draw, and defensive wings) are responsible for gaining possession off of the draw, transitioning the ball from defense to offense, and slowing an opponent’s scoring opportunity. Defensive players (originally referred to as point,

coverpoint, and third man) are responsible (with the midfi elders) for marking the other team’s attack players when a scoring opportunity is available. Defensive players are the fi rst players to start a team’s scoring opportunity by receiving a pass from their goalie and quickly transitioning (by passing or running) the ball down the fi eld. The goalie attempts to save every shot with her stick and clears (passes) the ball to her teammates for a potential scoring opportunity. Traditionally, defensive players do not advance beyond the opponent’s restraining line, attack players do not drop below their team’s restraining line, and midfi eld players run along the entire fi eld, but all players must be able to advance to any location at any time as long as the offsides rule is not violated.
