Over the past month Sydney Girls

High has seen some truly remarkable

successes, even in the context of a

school where excellence is the norm

and diverse programs regularly pro-

duce impressive achievements. Many

of these follow from the examples

and role models who have come be-

fore. This is gratifying for students in

previous years who, having invested

so much in reaching the top, can rec-

ognize that they have set the bench-

mark for others to aspire to. While

we know this to be true in academic

results and high scholastic achieve-

ments, it is also clearly evidenced

across the range of the co-curricular

programs.

The selection in the NSW All Schools

Debating team of two of our stellar

debaters, Ally Pitt from the Class of

2020, and Anna-Sophia Zahar, our

Senior Prefect, saw the NSW team

win the Australian title at the national

competition held in Darwin. Following

in the footsteps of leading debaters

from Sydney Girls High over the past

decade, Ally has been selected for

the Australian team to compete in

Bangkok in July. Congratulations are

extended to Ally and to Anna-Sophia

for their accomplishments and lead-

ership in this challenging level of de-

bating. The depth of our debating

program produces outstanding com-

mitment from all students. This in-

cludes learning from their tertiary

coaches, adjudication, feedback,

honing their individual skills as well

as teambuilding through positive col-

laboration. Congratulations are due

to all 2019 debaters who have

brought great credit to themselves

and the school throughout the

Eastside and Federation Cup compe-

titions on Friday nights. We look for-

ward to the continuation of positive

debating experiences through The

Premiers Debating Challenge in com-

ing months.

Both our Year 8 and Year 10 da Vinci

teams were placed first in the Da

Vinci Decathlon competition held at

Knox Grammar, continuing the tradi-

tion of outstanding collaboration,

intellect and strategy which has made

our teams so successful over past

years. Congratulations to Year 10

members: Ava Broinowski, Sophia

Dervenis, Madeleine Fiene, Alika Ho,

Penelope Lukes, Angela Xue, Shanni

Yehuda and Zoe Williams. This is the

same combination which placed First

in the state and went on to win the

national trophy last year; an out-

standing achievement and great role

models for our junior teams. The Year

8 team composed of Jessica Ashe,

Emily Brewster, Sonia Chapman, Al-

ice Kim, Venus Lam, Portia Palm-

erlee, Teonie Quach and Angel Yu,

were outstanding in achieving their

overall first place. Through the indi-

vidual decathlon rounds they were

placed First in Code breaking and

Ideation; Second in Maths; Third in

English and Creative Producers. We

wish our two state teams the very

best for the national championships

at the end of the month. Congratula-

tions are also due to our Year 9 team

which placed First in Cartography, a

highly successful collaboration, and

to our Year 7 team in their first expe-

rience of the Decathlon.

Everyone who saw the recent produc-

tion of Oklahoma! commented on the

polish, and mature performances

from the cast, and the superb talent

of the orchestra. The school extends

its thanks to the teachers who are

the heart of the performing arts in the

school and whose vision and commit-

ment to arts education drives the

staging of the co-production with our

ry second year. To the Producer and

Director, Ms Surbey, Music Director

Ms Irvine, co-artistic Director Ms Aus-

Deputy Principal Deputy Principal

As we near the mid-point of Term 2, I

would like to reflect on the huge up-

grade of works that have taken place

in the first half of the school year.

Many of these works are nearing com-

pletion and will showcase the physical

environment of the school leading up

to the centenary of the establishment

of the Moore Park site in 2021. As

part of the program, new floor cover-

ings have been laid, over 90% of the

school has been painted both internal-

ly and externally, a new floor has been

laid in the Multipurpose Hall, and up-

graded lighting and electronic infor-

mation boards have been installed. A

new HSC Honour Board for future stu-

dent names has also been installed to

complement the existing one which

has run out of space. It is to the credit

of staff and students that this work has

been able to proceed during school

time with minimal disruption to teach-

ing and learning. School service stu-

dents from Year 7, with our General

Assistant Mr Lewis, have also assisted

with cleaning and polishing of heritage

cabinets and other items that have

needed to be removed and replaced to

facilitate the works. We thank them for

this.

Reporting and Parent-Teacher eve-

nings are a major feature of Term 2

and early Term 3, with all students

receiving their mid-year or mid-course

report. Parents are encouraged to at-

tend upcoming Parent Teacher eve-

nings:

Years 9 & 11 – Tuesday 2nd July

Year 7 – Thursday 25th July

Years 8 & 10 – Monday 29th July

Following on from this, as part of the

SGHS School Plan, improved communi-

cation systems for parents is a priority.

Communication is, by definition, a two-

way street. Often, the first time that the

school becomes aware of a change of

contact details for a parent is when the

bookings for parent-teacher night are

emailed. It is essential that parents

ensure that the school is advised of

changed contact details, particularly

email addresses, prior to the bookings

being sent. It may make the difference

between getting an interview and miss-

ing out as many teachers are fully

booked. Please email the school office:

[email protected] if you

need to make a change.

On Sunday 26th May, the school was

represented at the annual Boer War

Memorial Service held inside the com-

pletely renovated NSW War Memorial

in Hyde Park by relieving Head Teacher

HSIE, Ms Catherine Bavell and stu-

dents Maya Anderson (Year 10) and

Simone Wei (Year 12). Maya read “The

Ode” and Simone sang the National

Anthem as has been customary for

several years. This year the event was

held inside the famous structure which

has been completely renovated over

the last two years.

Finally, I would like to make mention of

the hard work of the PDHPE faculty this

semester. The first semester each year

features a large number of carnivals at

school, zone, regional and state level.

SGHS students are historically very

successful and often progress through

to state and even national level. This

success would not be possible without

the efforts of the PDHPE staff and the

sports co-ordinators Ms Kathy McKee

and Ms Sam Griffin in particular.

I wish all the best for the rest of the

term.

P&C Report

From the President: Louise Fleck

By the time you read this we will be mid

-way through Term 2 already!

P&C Forum ‘Curriculum choices and

patterns of study at SGHS’: On 21 May

a very well attended forum about

‘Curriculum choices and patterns of

study at SGHS’ was held in Campbell

Hall. The Principal, Ms Andrea Connell,

Deputy Principal (Curriculum), Mr Gregg

Harrison, and head teachers from each

faculty attended the forum and ex-

plained to the large audience the pat-

tern of education in high school – that

is Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8), Stage 5

(Years 9 and 10) and Stage 6 (Years 11

and 12). We were brought up to date

with changes in curriculum, the subject

choices available for students moving

into years 9 and 11, and how the time-

tabling is arranged to maximise the

satisfaction of as many of the girls’ sub-

ject preferences as possible. Mr Harri-

son also showed an extremely interest-

ing slide of the subject choices for the

last several school duxes – interesting

because there is no pattern of subjects

common to the girls with some focusing

on maths and science, some in the

humanities and/or creative arts, and

some mixing subjects from across the

spectrum. Each girl chose the things

that she enjoyed and that interested

her, and each was able to excel. We

owe a lot to the commitment of the

teachers in teaching and guiding our

girls to do their best and also to spend-

ing their own time after school (in this

case a long day in the sun at the sports

carnival) to explain to parents how the

systems work. The presentation will be

made available on the intranet in the

Parents’ Corner.

‘Mental health and resilience issues for

high performing students’ is the title of

the joint SBHS/SGHS Forum at 7pm on

Wednesday 19 June. The speaker will

be Professor Viviana Wuthrich from the

Macquarie University Centre for Emo-

tional Health. The Forum will take place

in the Campbell Hall at Sydney Girls

High School.

The Governors Centre: The Fundraising

Committee continues to work hard at

finding the necessary support to ensure

that The Governors Centre becomes a

venue and resource of a standard that

matches the talents and abilities of our

girls. Jo Auerbach put together an ex-

cellent grant application seeking sup-

port for lighting and sound fit out for

the new auditorium. In July, many par-

ents will have the opportunity to vote

for our project - we’ll tell you more

about that when voting opens. Today a

letter has been sent from Desiree

Fiene, of the SGHS P&C Governors Cen-

tre Fundraising Committee and myself,

to parents of girls in Years 7-10, giving

them the chance to advance pay build-

ing fund contributions at a discounted

rate. I encourage those who can, to

please do so. The Committee is also

identifying other potential sources of

funding, including grants and donors.

Information about the purpose, history,

fit out and funding of The Governors

Centre will be provided at the joint

SGHS/SBHS Forum on 19 June.

The Canteen Committee is exploring

the options for on-line ordering. It’s our

ambition to make a decision before the

end of Term 2, and to be ready to im-

plement by the end of Term 3. This will

involve some minor changes to the pat-

tern of offerings at the canteen to en-

sure that orders can be met while

maintaining the option for girls to ob-

tain fresh food without having ordered.

Volunteers are always needed in the

School Uniform Shop and the Canteen.

Along with the SGHS Rowing Club, the

Uniform Shop and the Canteen are sub-

committees of the P&C and provide

essential services to the school com-

munity. If you are willing to assist, or

want to know more information about

what is involved, please contact:

Jennifer Lorenz, President, SGHS Uni-

form Shop Committee:

[email protected]

Ivan Wong, Convenor, SGHS Canteen

Committee:

[email protected]

Hope to meet you at the Forum in June!

Opening Hours for the Library

At the request of senior students a few

years back, it was decided to extend

the library’s opening hours. We are

open until:

5.30pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and

Thursday. There are a few exceptions

when we do not open, but normally we

are open after school on Tuesday,

Wednesday and Thursday.

This is to provide a quiet place to study

for students in Years 11 and 12. We

hope senior students will take ad-

vantage of this opportunity.

Pictures below show senior students

hard at work in the library after hours.

All students are reminded that the Li-

brary opens at 8am daily Monday to

Friday.

For students wanting a quiet place to

study, finish homework, or just relax

and read, you are welcome to come

before school at 8am.

We have a wide selection of current

magazines on display, as well as the

daily newspapers.

Community Service Prefect Report

The Sydney Girls High School Prefect

Body was very pleased to have held,

yet again, another successful charity

fundraiser that reignited the communi-

ty spirit embedded within the school.

After tirelessly practicing henna de-

signs featuring stars and nail painting

for hours and hours behind closed

doors so that our artistic prowess was

up to scratch, we are proud to have

raised a total of $507.40. Even though,

at times, it got difficult to contain the

roars of excitement that echoed from

the lines that led to the rows of pre-

fects hammering out designs on doz-

ens of students, we would like to ex-

tend our deepest gratitude to each and

every student and staff member who

approached the tables with such en-

thusiasm and didn’t even hesitate to

put out their hands and reach into their

wallets to get into the spirit while do-

nating to such a worthy cause. We are

delighted to remark that all of the pro-

ceeds will be going to the STARS Foun-

dation, the 2019 prefect charity. Their

mission is to support and enable Abo-

riginal and Torres Strait Islander girls

and young women to make active

choices towards realising their full po-

tential in all aspects of their develop-

ment and wellbeing, improving educa-

tion and health outcomes for Aboriginal

and Torres Strait Islander young wom-

en all over Australia. We look forward

to your unconditional support in future

charity fundraisers to come, so togeth-

er, we can play our part in enhancing

the lives of others.

Debating

It has been an eventful month for

SGHS debaters. Coaching started up

on the first Thursday of the term, and

competitions on the Friday of the same

week. In Eastside, this round was

against Cranbrook, and in FED, we

were up against Newington, so all

teams faced some stiff competition. As

usual, we were able to pull through,

achieving an impressive 10 wins out of

14 debates. As we draw near to the

final rounds of these competitions, we

go into the knockout stages, with semi

and grand finals in Eastside as well as

a quarter final round in FED. In

Eastside, the team from every year

made it into the grand finals. We were

the only school to achieve this, and it is

a fantastic testament to our skill and

hard work. Further, after all seven

rounds as well as the semi finals, our

Year 9 and 12 teams remain undefeat-

ed, which is an incredible achievement.

In FED, six out of eight teams made it

to the semi-finals. Overall, this season

has shown the incredible skill of all

SGHS debaters, and all students

should feel incredibly proud of their

achievements.

In other debating news, the Australian

National Schools Debating Champion-

ships took place this month, from the

19th to the 26th. This year, the NSW

team features Sydney Girls debaters

occupying two of four speaking roles,

with Anna-Sophia Zahar of Year 12 and

Ally Pitt of Year 11. This is a magnifi-

cent achievement for these girls, and

truly a testament to their prodigious

talent and perseverance.

The PDC competition has also begun,

with the Year 12 PDC team winning

their debate against Rose Bay and

Randwick Boys High School, and the

Year 11 PDC team winning their de-

bate against Randwick Girls High

School.

Overall, as Friday night debating draws

to a close, the amazing achievements

of SGHS debaters has only become

more apparent. All of the long hours

and hard work that have been devoted

to debating has come to fruition, and

all debaters should feel immensely

proud of their achievements.

Careers

Dear Parents/Carers and Students,

May has been a fantastic month with

many events happening in the Careers

sector.

In a joint TAS and Careers initiative, 30

students from Years 10 & 12 attended

an engineering and construction event

in North Sydney. Students were able to

see the foundations of a $130 million

building project, currently being worked

on by an Old Girl – Isabel Duffy (Class

of 2008) who met with Ms Gay and I to

make this event a success. Isabel is

the structural engineer working on this

site and we heard from her about her

career trajectory after graduating from

Sydney Girls High. Students also heard

from an architect, accountant and sur-

veyor, exploring the different aspects

and careers that intersect when work-

ing on such a project.

Ms Livingstone, Design & Technology

teacher, also attended this event and

mentioned how this experience contex-

tualised what has been taught in class,

as well as providing a great insight into

different related careers. It was benefi-

cial for our students to see women

working and discussing their work-life

balance in this male-dominated field,

particularly when we heard from Alison

Mirams, CEO of the major construction

company - Roberts Pizzarotti – who

studied Quantity Surveying at university

and now is at the forefront of her field.

This opportunity has helped Engineer-

ing students in Year 12 and Design and

Technology students in Year 10 see

real-world applications of their studies,

which will allow them to make more

informed decisions about their career

trajectories in the future. A number of

work experience opportunities have

opened up as a result of this connec-

tion.

It has been quite a month for Old Girls

contributing to SGHS. Aside from Isabel

Duffy, shown in the image (opposite

page top middle), mentoring students

overlooking the construction site, we

also had Carina Trinh (Class of 2006)

give a talk about optometry. She is now

the Vice President of Optometry NSW &

ACT. We also had the pleasure of host-

ing Dr Jiao-Jiao Li from the University of

Sydney (Class of 2004) who is now a

researcher and lecturer in bioengineer-

ing. She presented about her career

path and the engineering field. What is

most beneficial for our students, aside

from an insight to different fields, is the

career trajectories, including the uncer-

tainties and experiences that led these

former students into their respective

careers.

You will note that the three Old Girls

mentioned are excelling in their fields;

great role models for our students. We

are delighted to have such a strong

connection with our Old Girls and have

them return to school to share their

experiences with our current students.

Updates

Year 9

It is pleasing to see Year 9 students

have started to attend some of the

lunchtime careers talks – keep this up!

Year 10

A reminder to Year 10 to submit their

work experience forms this term. Help

is available, if needed. Most classes

have received their Parents and Em-

ployer Guides, along with their Emer-

gency Contact Card. Please pass the

guides on to the relevant parties.

The resumes submitted by students for

review have been completed to an im-

pressive calibre – and I would expect

no less from our students. Please con-

tinue to refine these in response to

feedback.

It was great to have ten students par-

take in a health careers exploration day

at Randwick Children’s Hospital this

month. While the opportunity was lim-

ited to ten students, the resources

have been shared with the whole

grade.

Year 11

It is great to see so many students

have seized the opportunity and regis-

tered for the Australian Society for

Medical Research Careers Day, which

will be taking place in early June. Ca-

reer exploration, through open days,

excursions and careers talks will help

you make informed decisions about

your subjects and career choices in the

future.

Year 12

UAC was invited to present to the whole

of Year 12 on the 24th of May about

university applications, as well as the

Educational Access Scheme, Schools

Recommendation Scheme and Equity

Scholarships. If students seek further

assistance and clarification, pay a visit

to the careers office or make an ap-

pointment via email.

This month we have had a number of

careers talks and it is pleasing to see

so many Year 12 students attended the

various talks, depending on their inter-

ests. Next month we will have UNSW

coming out to discuss their courses

and the Co-Op Scholarship application

process. We will also have USYD come

out and give presentations on general

admission and faculty-specific talks.

Over 70% of Year 12 have had in-depth

meetings as part of their Post-School

Plan sessions. Parents are asked to

encourage their daughters to meet with

me if they have not yet arranged a Post

-School Plan meeting.

As always, I can be contacted via phone

on 9331 2336 or via email on wel-

[email protected] if there are any

queries from students or parents.

Kind regards,

Wasim El-Haj

rate their projects such as embroidery,

patchwork and digital printing. The re-

sults are fantastic!

A big thank you to those who donated

jeans for our students. They have been

put to good use and we have avoided

wasting our precious resources. Now

we are asking again for donations of

the semi-finals round. Well done girls. I

riginal theatre context and storytelling

Dance

The Dance auditions this year were

quite demanding with over 120 stu-

dents attending over a two-week period

at the beginning of Term 1. Three en-

sembles were established: Junior, Sen-

ior and Company. All have been avidly

preparing for the Sydney Region “In the

Spotlight Dance Festival’.

It is with great pleasure we announce

that all three ensembles successfully

auditioned to represent Sydney Girls

High at this Festival, to be held at the

Seymour Centre during weeks eight

and nine in Term 2.

(Tickets will be available from the Sey-

mour Centre Box Office, website or over

the phone on Monday 20 May 2019

(Week 4, Term 2) from 9:00am. The

2018 shows sold out within a few days!

Website: www.seymourcentre.com

Box Office: 9351 7940

This is a tremendous achievement and

congratulations to all dancers and Shel-

ley Moore as Sydney Girls continues to

maintain successful entry at these sig-

nificant events.

Shelley has explored exciting themes

and developed moving items to capti-

vate the audience.

“Time Trap’ - Junior ensemble (trapped

in an alternate universe): Wednesday

19th June.

Close Encounters – Company (the por-

trayal of first connections and experi-

ences): Friday 21st June and Warrior’s

remorse – Senior Ensemble (battling

surrender): Thursday 27th June.

Later this year, Company members will

also have the opportunity to represent

Sydney Girls Dance in the Sydney Ei-

steddfod, which in past years we have

performed exceptionally well at.

On April 2nd, twenty students were in-

vited to watch Sydney Dance Company

in their artistic piece choreographed by

Rafael Bonachela, Gabrielle Nankivell

and Melanie Lane. Bonachela’s crea-

tion, titled ‘Cinco’, which uncovers the

number ‘five’ and all the shapes and

abstract words it entails. Nankivell’s

piece, called Neon Aether, plays with

the idea of air and its translucence and

invisibility. Each choreographer deeply

explored the movements and place-

ments involved with their concepts,

bringing to life intriguing routines

paired with impressive scores and light-

ing. These school matinee performanc-

es allow the audience to understand

the artistic decisions and processes

behind such bold and entertaining

dances.

Basketball

SGHS Basketball has had a successful

first competition, with four teams:

Flash, Wildcats, Thunder and Flames,

making it to the semi-finals in their re-

spective divisions. We also saw our

Year 8 team, Wildcats, play incredibly

hard in their grand final against New-

town Stars, only losing by a small mar-

gin of 21-15.

We would like to give a warm welcome

to our two new Year 7 teams, Panthers

and Lightning, who have joined for the

very first time for our second competi-

tion of 2019, and all other incoming

players who continue to make SGHS

Basketball a wonderful co-curricular.

This competition also saw the arrival of

our much anticipated and highly fash-

ionable SGHS-custom jerseys, which

feature our school colours and logo.

Competition 2 commenced in Week 3

Term 2 on the 17th of May and will run

for ten weeks until Week 3 Term 4 on

the 9th of August. A friendly reminder

that SGHS Basketball expects great

commitment from all players, including

training once a week and Friday night

games. The training schedule for this

comp is outlined in the table below.

We wish all teams the best of luck in

competing against each other through-

out the rest of this term. We have abso-

lutely no doubts that all the girls will

represent SGHS with much vigour and

tenacity! May the best team win!

Rowing

JOIN SGHS ROWING CLUB NOW!

“We are a family and every rower does

their bit to make rowing unforgettable”

Find out all about rowing

Pre-season fun day on Tuesday August

13th

Family welcome day Sunday August

25th

Why is rowing the best sport?

Rowing is great fun. It’s fantastic exer-

cise and good for your mind too! Row-

ing builds team skills, improves your

organisation skills, resilience and you’ll

make friends from all years of the

school.

Is rowing expensive?

Rowing is generally considered an ex-

pensive sport but at SGHS, it is made

affordable because it is subsidised by

funds collected from parking.

How much time will rowing take up?

Rowing training happens 4 times a

week, with 2 sessions at the boatshed.

It’s very easy to manage your time and

you’ll quickly become an expert at time

management, with help and tips from

the experienced rowers.

Are there many early mornings?

Saturday mornings are the only early

starts and its easy to get up because

you get to sleepover at the boatshed

after school on Fridays. If there’s a re-

gatta, there’s no sleepover and parents

generally car pool to get you there.

When is the rowing season?

The season starts in September and

ends in March.
