A DEFINITION OF DISCIPLE

A disciple is a person who follows Jesus. We are to know

Jesus and his teachings. We are to grow more like Jesus.

We are to go into the world for Jesus, serving others and

making new disciples.

So discipleship involves knowing, growing and going. We

can compare these areas of discipleship to the head,

heart, and hands. Each one of these areas relies upon

each other. Discipleship is the pursuit of whole-life trans-

formation, not just biblical or theological information.

Prayer Concerns “Dear God, thank you for Your promise made true in Christ Jesus to give strength to the weary and to give freedom from the pains of this life. We ask

that you be with our Brothers & Sisters to give them the strength they need and relieve them of their pains. Amen.”

Kerry Amonson has been diagnosed with cancer in his mouth, he is taking chemotherapy and radiation treatments in Iowa City.

UPDATE: Kerry says he is doing well and is done with treatments and is resting at home. The port has been removed.

Maria Sadler Amonson has been diagnosed with Cancer, she is going to Rochester for tests. UPDATE: The Cancer has spread

to other areas of Maria’s body.

Dan Myer was put on our prayer list by Barb Johnston, Dan is having problems with his liver and is seeking medical treatment in

Rochester.

Tracy Wilcox is Tom & Barb Johnston’s Son in Law, they have discovered tumors in his brain and are working on reducing their

size. UPDATE: Tumors have been found in his liver and they are waiting for test results before proceeding.

Dick Dyas is having some trouble and asked to be put on the prayer list, cards and well wishes can be sent to the Rotary Senior

Living North Home.

Julia Rutledge was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer and has begun chemotherapy.

Bill Rutledge has developed Parkinson’s and Atrophy of the Brain.

Sara Ell and her family are expecting a baby, Sara is due February 2018. Please keep Sara and Baby in your prayers as this preg-

nancy is a higher risk pregnancy than previous. UPDATE: Sara and Baby are doing well, they have found out that they are having

a baby girl and all genetic testing has come back to be normal, Praise the Lord.

Richard Umstead has been moved to Rotary Senior Living North Home.

Doris Porter has been having some health issues.

Jeri Meyer is waiting to get the results of some tests that have been conducted. Testing is regarding the cancer she has.

Art Chapman was placed on the prayer list by Barb Johnston, Art has had a portion of his lung removed and the test results have

come back that there is NO Cancer, Praise the Lord!! Please pray for healing for Art.

Jerry Keith is Barb Johnston’s Brother in Law, Keith has recently had knee surgery and has developed a staph infection and has

been placed in an assisted living facility until the infection is gone and he can bear weight on the knee.

Beverly McVicker has fallen and broke her hip, she is currently in Mercy at Mason City and has had surgery to repair hip and also

had surgery to address the blockages in her heart.

Prayer List Policy To add someone to the prayer list, you may call or visit the church office during office hours, or you may announce it during worship.

Always get permission from the individual first, otherwise they will not be added to the prayer list.

Please be sure to update the church office on the status of the person, so we can be sure to have a current prayer list. If the church has not been updated on the prayer request for 2

consecutive months the request will be removed.

At the end of June we were $3165 short of meeting all of our bills. Five Sundays in July and some additional

giving has improved our financial situation as we were $825 short as of July 31st.

Expenses for the parsonage in July included $2188 for painting, $614 for a stove, $563 for carpet cleaning, and

$212 for various small items.

Thank you again for your generous giving. If you are unable to attend church, you are still able to give by

dropping off your offering in the church office or by mailing to EG UMC, PO Box 101, Eagle Grove, IA 50533.

Like last year, I stated that to put on Vacation Bible School it took “a village”. Again it is so true.

and will delay the shipment.

How to Get Through What You're Going Through

Small Group Study

Life often doesn’t make sense, and dishes up a lot more questions than an-

swers. We simply don’t know why things happen the way they do. But we do

know we can experience peace because God is with us and he loves us.

Loss is inevitable. Bad things happen. When the unexpected comes your

way, your world is instantly turned upside down. You long to understand

why. Why did my husband walk out on me? Why did my wife die of cancer?

Why did I lose my job? Why am I struggling with mental health issues?

In this groundbreaking study, Pastor Rick* and Kay Warren will help you understand the jour-

ney of grief and what to expect along the way. From the initial shock, to the unbearable sorrow,

you struggle with reality and ultimately surrender on a pathway to peace and service. It’s not a

linear experience but with God’s Word and his ways, he will carry you through it.

Grief is God’s tool for you getting through the transitions of life.

You can have hope knowing God is in control, he will bring good out of bad, and he has a plan

to use your pain for a purpose.

This seven week study includes the following sessions:

This study will run consecutive Wednesday evenings beginning September 6th and concluding

on October 18th. Each session will begin at 7:00 pm and last approximately one to one and one

half hours. Since this study will be an in home study there will be limited seats available.

God’s left hand

A 6-year-old and his grandma went for a walk one autumn day. “Look at the gorgeous leaves!” Grandma exclaimed. “Just think, God painted each one of them just for us!” “Yep,” said her grandson, “and he did it left-handed.” Perplexed, Grandma asked, “Why do you think God used his left hand to create all this beauty?” “Because,” said the boy matter-of-factly, “we learned in Sunday school that Jesus sits on God’s right one.”

A taste of heaven

When an admirer asked renowned pianist Vladmir

Horowitz how he could play so beautifully, he’s said

to have replied that anyone could play the notes,

but the true music lay in the pauses between them.

The same can be said of life.

Rabbi Evan Moffic (Shalom for the Heart) writes, “It

is in the pauses — the rests, the spaces in between

— that meaning is made and that holiness is felt.”

Nowadays we keep so busy there’s hardly a pause

or space in our day.

“But that’s not the way God created us [or] the

world,” Moffic continues. “God worked, then rested.

God created, then paused. … Thus, our Sabbath is

the day when we can marvel at the beauty of the

world God created. It is the day we enjoy what the

ancient sages called ‘a taste of heaven.’ It is a day

when we stop thinking about the what of life and

remind ourselves of the why of life.”
