PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3

Ave + Maria! After Death There Is No Longer a Possibility of Merit or Demerit The first aspect, which is the fact that “After death there is no longer a possi-bility of merit or demerit,” (R. GARRIGOU-LAGRANGE, Life Everlasting, 154), opens up the need for purgatory. For this reason, it is considered even before propos-ing purgatory’s existence. The impossibility of meriting after death is intimately linked to the passive nature of purgatory and makes obvious the fact that the souls in purgatory stand in need of Divine assistance, as God alone can purify them. At a further point we will see that the Church triumphant and militant comes to the aid of the Church suffering by means of charity, that is, willing God for the suffering neighbor. Martin Luther claimed that, “The souls in purgatory are not sure of their salvation, at least not all; nor is it proved by any arguments or by the Scriptures that they are beyond the state of meriting or of in-creasing in charity.” Contrary to this statement and in support of the doctrine of the Church are the writings of Catherine of Genoa and Thomas Aquinas. St. Catherine, who wrote extensively on the nature of purgatory after having received private revelations, claims that the hope of salvation is intrinsic to the joy that the souls in purgatory experience alongside their great sufferings. She also follows the Church’s teaching that the souls in purgatory cannot accomplish meritorious deeds. Concerning the souls in purgatory being beyond meriting, St. Thomas Aquinas clearly states, “The soul united to a mortal body is in the state of meriting, while the soul separated from the body is in the state of receiving good or evil for its merits; so that after death it is either in the state of receiving its final reward, or in the state of being hindered from receiving it.” The souls in purgatory are “separated from the body” and thus unable to merit and yet they are also “hindered from receiving” the reward of heaven until they are purified. Aquinas argues further in support of the foregoing, “The body co-operates in merit, as an essential part of the man who merits.” Pope Leo X condemned a subsequent erroneous assertion proposed by Luther, which stated: “The souls in purgatory sin without intermission, as long as they seek rest and abhor punishments.” This claim was formed with an earthly mindset, which considered that man, weak as he is, naturally shrinks from suf-fering and attempts to escape it. It should be understood that the souls in purgatory accept their condition and are resigned to it as the will of God. Here again St. Catherine of Genoa states that the souls in purgatory accept their sufferings willingly. We agree with Garrigou-Lagrange that the souls in purgatory conform to the commandments of the New Law and the theological virtues. They are at peace with the just decree of God, submit to it, and patiently await deliverance. The significance of this point is that the faithful should avoid assuming they will be in control of what takes place in purgatory. Souls in purgatory endure a passive purification, “satispassion,” according to Garrigou-Lagrange, which is directed at satisfying for the temporal punishment due to sin. This process is subject to the virtue of hope as souls in purgatory are assured of their salvation, yet are still awaiting admit-tance into the beatific vision. The fact that one can no longer sin in purgatory assists one to hope in the mer-cy of God during this life for having established a safe place for purification after death if one should have need of it. On the other hand, no longer being able to merit once one is in purgatory should spur one to live this present life to the full, that is, making use of the graces God bestows and responding to the promptings of the Holy Spirit as he completes the work he began at baptism. God bless you, Father Andrew

Dressing up as your favorite Saint is encouraged! :)

In these early weeks of the Atrium, the Level I children are working with the model Altar materials learning the names of each item Father uses during Mass and pondering their pur-pose. The children watch each Sunday for a special moment. Last week they focused on the Entrance Procession (including the Book of the Gospels), the proclamation of the Gos-pel, and when Father reverences the Book of the Gospel. The Holy Bible is God’s Word, and thus our most precious book. When we listen to God’s Word, God is with us, and He (Jesus) is the “light of the world” (John 8:12). Saint Jerome says, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” In subsequent presentations we add: it is read/studied by people all over the world, in many different languages.

Evangelio: Lc 18, 9-14
