PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3

Ave + Maria! A great crisis in Western society is the lack of genuine catechesis. Ireland, for example, was a nation steeped in the Catholic faith for centuries, yet that faith was not clearly communicated to the young who encountered a rich C atholic culture without a fundamental understanding of its source. Secularism crept in and an uncatechized generation began to dig up the roots that made the culture and society prosper. Ireland is just one example; this is happening in the entire Western world to a greater or less-er degree. The need for catechesis is very apparent. In no other branch of education would children be left untaught to learn and discover the well-known fundamentals of a discipline haphazardly. If the faith is valuable to us, we should communicate it to our children as the most valuable part of their inheritance from us. Remember the words of Saint Paul, "How are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard?" (Romans 10:14). In order to teach, you do not have to be living and understanding everything in your faith perfectly. Christ is the perfect example and we strive to imitate Him. We are at once disciples, learning from the Lord, and apostles, sent to teach the nations what we ourselves have received. It is the task of each Christian to teach those being initiated into the faith through an authentic Christian witness. The role of parents and grandparents in the catechesis of the young cannot be underestimated. If the family is the first school, this is especially the case when we consider faith and prayer. The life of prayer goes hand-in-hand with pass-ing on the faith from one generation to the next. G.K. Chesterton once wrote, "Education is simply the soul of a socie-ty as it passes from one generation to another." Our children and grandchildren will be able to distinguish an authentic life of prayer and relationship with Christ from just going through the motions. Let the children see your faith lived out in prayer and moral values. The example of a genuine life can instill the truth of the faith deeply in the hearts of the young.

The first examples of the faith, gathered in childhood, hold an important place in a person’s spiritual formation. In the early years of life, parents, grandparents, and family members have a profound influence on us. They can be trusted to tell us the truths we do not yet understand. The young can have the possibility of eternal life opened to them through education in the faith and the reception of the sacraments. Experience shows us that as people enter their teenage years and early adulthood the influences in their lives change. Friends and colleagues become more influential at times then parents and grandparents. However, the religious foundation once established can be revisited later in life, and com-monly is, once the influence of the world fades.

Imagine the whole of life as a mountain. As you start going up, you pass through a thick atmosphere where life thrives. Trees can grow and take root in this zone, but as you progress further the air thins. High mountains have a tree line which marks where the air becomes too thin to sustain permanent vegetation. Any climber who wants to reach the top knows that he has to endure an atmosphere that is poor in oxygen for a time. However, he also knows that he can-not spend too much time at the summit and that the place he can truly flourish is below the tree line. The initial climb could be seen as the beginning of life where the faith can be well-nourished and thrive. At a certain point, the land-scape at the top becomes barren; we pass through a hostile atmosphere where the influences of the world overshadow the voice of God and the Church. Yet, if we are blessed enough to be let down by the world when we begin to descend from the spectacle of the mountain we see the familiar trees and are encompassed by the atmosphere of faith we learned of long ago. This analogy may not help as much as I should like, but the point is that often the faith has a stronger influence on us at the beginning and end of our life. However, it is more natural to return to what you know than it is to seek help and comfort from what is unfamiliar. Those who come back to God later in life often were intro-duced to Him in their earliest years. Therein lies the importance of catechizing the young. If they are willing to receive the faith, it will be carried with them even if the influence of the world is so strong they do not pay attention to it until the end of their lives when the world is quieted. Here we can learn from the patience and prayer of St. Monica, the mother of St. Augustine, who prayed for decades that her son might be converted. We want to win all for Christ no matter how long we have to wait. Start your children out right and pray them safely home.

Fr. Andrew
