The study room or the study area is a very important place in all homes, yet it is extremely overlooked. Usually kids will have a small desk in his/her room and that is it. But let’s stop here for a second. This is the place where the very first steps in our children ca-reers will be taken. Don’t you think that it is really essential to create the perfect setting for them to enhance this process? I am sure that no parent will think otherwise.

Have we agreed on this fact, we all will start looking to this space totally dif-ferent. Now it is not only about colorful desks and cute bookshelves. Howev-er, it is about how a room is conduc-tive to the process of studying and for the assimilation of information. Feng

Shui -the ancient Chinese art of bal-ance and harmony- states few guide-lines that if integrated into the design of the room that you or your child has chosen to study in, great deal of im-provements will be achieved.

First, pay attention to the location of the study area. Ideally, it should be in the near right corner of a quiet room’s entrance. This space governs skills and knowledge. A window is to be on the left of the desk. If there is no window there, hang a mirror instead, which can act in much the same way. Make sure that for the best results that the desk does not have the per-son who is sitting at it with his back to the door, as this can affect his con-centration.

The second step is to choose the right furniture. Keeping all furniture unites low, square and blocky to prompt the child’s ability to settle down and get to work. Choose a chair with a high back away from the bookshelves. Ac-cording to Feng Shui, placing a pic-ture that is symbolic of water behind the chair, will increase the flow of cre-ative energy.

Third make sure that the study room is tidy, and clutter free to build positive energy. Studying in an untidy room can be quite distracting, so make sure that the room itself is clean and calm. Don’t leave things that are not neces-sary for studying strewn on the desk because that will not help with focus.Fourth, the place has to be adequately light in general. Besides, place a lamp with adjustable lighting directly on the desk. That way, kids won’t have an excuse to neglect their studies, and they will be able to read and write with ease throughout the day.

Fifth, give the room an open and in-viting look by placing a plant near the window. This can prevent bad luck and bad influences from coming in through the window. Using bamboo or cactus in this place can add some extra protection there and it can help keep whoever is studying there sharp-ly focused.

Finally, stimulating their sense of smell can prevent you from spacing out. If they are not working on a tight deadline, infuse the study area

BIG Architects are designing a new li-brary in Astana, Kazakhstan that will house not just books but space and time as well. Even more interesting is the building’s design. Its disk-like struc-ture comprises four archetypes - the cir-cle, the rotunda, the arch and the yurt. Here the design forms a spiraling circle around a vertical core and the struc-ture’s curves so the interior becomes the exterior and the walls the roof and roof into walls.

The structure is built from individual hexagonal cells on the exterior as well as throughout the interior that come together to form a cube. The design draws inspiration from the core func-tions and operations of UN where dif-ferent countries come together to cre-ate one entity but without losing their individual identities. The complex includes an assembly hall seating 1500, two conference rooms, a theater and an exhibition space. The open roof allows natural light through the interiors. An open staircase winds up the exterior of the building and leads all the way up to the roof, where a public garden and green roof await.

The first known system of taxation was in Ancient Egypt around 3000 BC - 2800 BC in the first dynasty of the Old Kingdom. When the crop comes in, fifth of it is given to the Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.

During the dark ages of Europe, nobil-ity were supported by taxes from the poor. The tax ratio would vary accord-ing to the needs of the ruling class. For example, during the crusades, Europe was burdened with taxes to finance this military campaigns.

In the modern History, the philoso-phy of taxation changed to support the poor, the disabled, or the retired. Taxes proceeds are used to fund eco-nomic infrastructure, social welfare, public services, and military expen-ditures. These services can include education systems, health care sys-tems, pensions for the elderly, unem-ployment benefits, and public trans-portation.

Property tax or real estate tax is a prominent type of taxation. Since the dawn of civilization, there is evidence of their use in ancient Egypt, Persia and China. Such taxation focused on the land, as its agricultural value. However, taxes based on the property itself was first fashioned in England.

The Egyptian government is suffering from severe budget deficit for some-times now. One of the techniques that can be used to increase the national income in any country is to re-shape

its taxation system. Following this ide-ology, last year the real estate taxa-tion system –that was first issued in the year of 1936- was amended.

For a better understanding of this new amendment, there are three basic questions to ask:

• Which real estate units are sub-jected to this law?

• Who is the person liable to pay this tax?

• How to calculate the amount of the tax payment?

First, units subjected to this law are each and every unit with a separate electricity meter, and of a market val-ue of 500,000 Egyptian pounds or of an annual rental value of 6000 Egyp-tian pounds or more. This includes all types of residential units; apartments, chalet, villas, and houses, commercial unites; offices, stores, and parking area, and finally, billboards and mo-bile networks antenna on rooftops as well.

It is important here to mention that in the case of a building with multiple unites, normally each unit is dealt with separately. However, if the whole building –even if it has several units- has only one electricity meter, then it is dealt with as one entity.

Second, the person eligible to make this payment is the owner of the prop-erty. Nevertheless, anyone who legal-ly represents him/her can make the payment.

If the unit is rented, the tenant may pay the tax given that the amount will be deducted from the annual rental

value. Third, the equation of calculating this tax is really complicated, as many factors are evolved. it start with the capital value of the unit which is 60% of the market value. This value is then used to calculate the rental val-ue, which is 3% of the capital value. Have we reached the rental value, an amount of 6,000 Egyptian Pounds of the rental value are exempted. Finally, 30% are deductible for maintenance. as well. Out of the rest of the rental value figure 10% is the annual real es-tate tax payment due. For further clarification, for a unit of a market value of 500,000 EGP, the an-nual real estate tax payable will be as follows:Capital value = (Market Value * 0.6) = (500,000 * 0.6) = 300,000 EGPRental Value = (Market Value *0.6) * 0.03 = (300,000* 0.03) = 9,000 EGPDeductibles for Maintenance = Rent-al Value * 0.3 = 9,000* 0.3 = 6,300 EGP Taxable Amount = Rental Value – 6,000 = 6,300 – 6,000 = 300 EGPTax Due = 300 * 0.1 = 30 EGP

The Rental Value is to be re-calculat-ed every five years period. It is impor-tant to note that the re-calculated rent-al value cannot be more than 30% of the previous value for residential units and 45% for commercial ones.New Rental Value residential ≤ (Rent-al Value * 0.3) + Rental Value New Rental Value commercial ≤(Rental Value * 0.45) + Rental Value Basical-ly, the corner stone of these lengthy calculations is the market value of any given unit. This value is to be deter-mined according to the neighborhood, the building, the finishing of the unit,

and many other factors. There are some entities exempted from the real estate tax such as NGO’s, and worship places.

According to the Minister of Finance Boutros Ghali, by this law the govern-ment is trying to cut down the budget deficit by three per cent. Besides, it will encourage the owners of unused units to put them in the market either for rent or for sale. Doing so the supply in the real estate market will increase.

Although succeeding governments have been using different fiscal policies aiming at decreasing the budget deficit, none of these techniques solved the problem permanently. However, they only snooze the problem for some time. Of course the solution is very clear as mentioned ages ago by the Father of Ec onomics; Adam Smith. In his book The Wealth of Nations he mentioned that only when the government stops trying to control the economic activities, specialization of labor and the efficient allocation of resources production will increase.

The study room or the study area is a very important place in all homes, yet it is extremely overlooked. Usually kids will have a small desk in his/her room and that is it. But let’s stop here for a second. This is the place where the very first steps in our children ca-reers will be taken. Don’t you think that it is really essential to create the perfect setting for them to enhance this process? I am sure that no parent will think otherwise.

Have we agreed on this fact, we all will start looking to this space totally dif-ferent. Now it is not only about colorful desks and cute bookshelves. Howev-er, it is about how a room is conduc-tive to the process of studying and for the assimilation of information. Feng

Shui -the ancient Chinese art of bal-ance and harmony- states few guide-lines that if integrated into the design of the room that you or your child has chosen to study in, great deal of im-provements will be achieved.

First, pay attention to the location of the study area. Ideally, it should be in the near right corner of a quiet room’s entrance. This space governs skills and knowledge. A window is to be on the left of the desk. If there is no window there, hang a mirror instead, which can act in much the same way. Make sure that for the best results that the desk does not have the per-son who is sitting at it with his back to the door, as this can affect his con-centration.

The second step is to choose the right furniture. Keeping all furniture unites low, square and blocky to prompt the child’s ability to settle down and get to work. Choose a chair with a high back away from the bookshelves. Ac-cording to Feng Shui, placing a pic-ture that is symbolic of water behind the chair, will increase the flow of cre-ative energy.

Third make sure that the study room is tidy, and clutter free to build positive energy. Studying in an untidy room can be quite distracting, so make sure that the room itself is clean and calm. Don’t leave things that are not neces-sary for studying strewn on the desk because that will not help with focus.Fourth, the place has to be adequately light in general. Besides, place a lamp with adjustable lighting directly on the desk. That way, kids won’t have an excuse to neglect their studies, and they will be able to read and write with ease throughout the day.

Fifth, give the room an open and in-viting look by placing a plant near the window. This can prevent bad luck and bad influences from coming in through the window. Using bamboo or cactus in this place can add some extra protection there and it can help keep whoever is studying there sharp-ly focused.

Finally, stimulating their sense of smell can prevent you from spacing out. If they are not working on a tight deadline, infuse the study area

with an uplifting scent like lavender, chamomile or rosemary. Floral scents like rose and geranium can improve memory. Warm one of these essen-tial oils in a diffuser help memorizing great chunks of material. If they are studying a confusing subject, ener-gize the study area with a citrus scent like lemon or orange. To improve at-tention, use peppermint. This flavor

will sharpen senses and make kids more alert.

Although these might seem many things to do but still it is nothing com-pared to the aim such a room is sup-posed to serve. Moreover, what is more important than providing the right space is providing the nurturing

environment for our kids grow healthy mentally, and emotionally. Taking care of their psychological well being is the key factor for bright future.Now our kids can shoot for the stars more powerfully than ever.

The Citadel is one of the world’s greatest monuments to me-dieval warfare, as well as a highly visible landmark on Cairo’s. Legend has it that Salah ad-Din chose the site for its healthy air. The story goes that he hung pieces of meat up all around Cairo. Everywhere the meat spoilt within a day, with the exception of the Citadel area where it remained fresh for several days. But in reality this location provides a strategic to defend outside attackers. Saladin also intended to use the Citadel as the basis for uniting the townships of Fustat and Cairo into a single city. Although this attempt did not go as well as planned, the Citadel itself would serve as the seat of Egyptian govern-ment for 700 years. The best building techniques of that time was used to con-struct the original Citadel. Great, round towers were build protruding from the walls so that defenders could direct flanking fire on those who might scale the walls. The walls themselves were ten meters (30 ft) high and three meters (10 ft) thick. Bir Yusuf was dug in order to supply the oc-cupants with drinking water. After the death of Salah ad-Din, his nephew, Al-Kamil, rein-forced the Citadel by enlarging several of the towers; specifi-cally Burg al-Haddad (Blacksmith’s Tower) and the Burgar-Ramlah (Sand Tower) making them fully three times larger.Many innovations and improvements would be made over the years, particularly during the Mamluk period. During the Otto-man period that perhaps the most iconic addition was made to the Citadel—the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. the mosque also reflects the Istanbul style of architecture, particularly the Blue Mosque of Sultan Ahmad, and differs enough from the Otto-mans to suggest some independence.South of the Mosque the Gawharah (Jewel) Palace was built to house the Egyptian government until it was later moved to the Abdeen Palace. Besides, another palace named Har-eem Palace was also constructed during the reign of Mu-hammad Ali. Today there is also a National Police Museum, and Military Museum at the Citadel.Today the Citadel is one of Egypt main attractions and is often the most popular non-pharaonic monuments. One may walk through time here, from the medieval era onward. Recently open-air stages were constructed within the Cita-del complex to host annual cultural event s with the laud-able aim of producing summer musical performances at the heart of Islam Cairo.
