As 2012 draws to an end, it’s a time for both reflection and for looking ahead.

Here, at The Source towers, it’s certainly been a hectic year! Launching a new magazine from scratch doesn’t happen overnight or without a lot of hard work and determination. On that note, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of The Source team, past and present, contributors and freelancers, and anyone else who has lent us their support. We couldn’t have done it without you so, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!

Of course, I also need to thank our readers. Whether you’ve been an avid reader since day one or have only recently discovered us, thank you for your interest and for picking up our magazine every issue. We look forward to keeping you entertained and informed throughout 2013 and for many more years to come! Remember, we love receiving your feedback, input, photographs and suggestions, so don’t be shy!

Applebee’s, the world’s largest casual dining restaurant chain, celebrated the official grand opening of their Al Ain restaurant with a day of fun family entertainment.

Mr. Saeed Al Muhairi, Chairman of Jananah Investments, cut the ribbon declaring the restaurant, which is the fourth in the UAE, officially open. He commented, “Applebee’s growth and development within the UAE is paramount in ensuring we provide our guests with a professional and dedicated service. Our expansion to Al Ain emphasizes our commitment to do just this”.

The grand opening was a whole lot of fun with clowns, balloon artists and face painters on hand to entertain the kids. To coincide with the opening, the company launched their brand new steak menu which is packed with a whole variety of delicious offerings.

One to One celebrateGRAND OPENING!

On the momentous date of 12/12/12, over 42000 volunteers joined together to help ‘Clean up the UAE’ as part of the Emirates Environmental Group’s (EEG) 11th annual campaign.

In Al Ain, hundreds of volunteers gathered in Al Masoudi full of enthusiasm and motivation and ready to get to work. Schoolchildren, teachers, laborers, businessmen and government employees came together to form the merry band of volunteers. Equipped with bio-degradable bin bags, re-usable gloves and ‘Clean Up’ caps and t-shirts the participants collected tons of waste to contribute the 191 tons collected nationwide.

EEG Chairperson, Habiba Al Marashi, congratulated volunteers on their efforts. “This (Clean up UAE campaign) is our own way of keeping the wisdom of the ‘Spirit of the Union' alive and expressing our love and loyalty to the country.”

The visit was aimed at raising traffic awareness among young children in a bid to boost understanding and knowledge of traffic culture in society.

The deadline for the Montegrappa First Fiction competition, part of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature 2013, has been extended until January 20th.

The contest, designed to give aspiring novelists the chance to get that all-important first break in the publishing world, is aimed at writers who have not yet had a novel published. The prize includes a trip to the London Book Fair 2013, lunch with top literary agent Luigi Bonomi and lots more.

Participants should submit a short synopsis and the first five pages of their manuscript. More details can be found at www.eaifl.com.

The festival, which is the fifth anniversary of the event, will take place from 5-9th March 2013.

Budding Novelist?

Driving to an Emirates Post office to collect your mail will soon be a thing of the past. Now, a new service called ‘My Home, My Building, My Zone’, will mean that letters and parcels can be delivered to your home. After successfully conducting a three month trial in Mirdif, the initiative will be rolled out across the rest of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain from January 2013.

Emirates Transport (ET) Al Ain branch last week carried out a mock evacuation of their main building, located in the Industrial Zone. The test was aimed at raising awareness amongst the public about the security and safety procedures to help them in emergencies, crises or disasters.

The exercise was carried out in coordination with ET's Al Ain Safety and Community Service Unit and the General Administration of Central Operations at the Ministry of the Interior, represented by the Department of Emergency and Public Safety in Al Ain.

Rashid Awad Mohammed, Al Ain branch manager at ET declared the exercise a success.

Thirty students and four staff from Al Ain English Speaking School (AAESS) will be visiting Katmandu, Nepal on 13th February for 10 days to complete their Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh (International) Awards.

This prestigious award is designed to challenge young people who must meet a series of high expectations, including a physical sport, a skill, a community service and an adventurous journey.

The group will trek in the mountains, go mountain bike riding and white water rafting before finishing their journey at Mission Himalaya Eco Farm and Orphanage where they will donate clothing, toys and money

and complete a number of enrichment and improvement activities.

The students aim to boost their fundraising efforts with a raffle prize draw with fantastic prizes.

Iran took first place in the recent West Asian Athletics Championships hosted in Dubai. However, it was hosts UAE who took everyone by surprise by gaining a total of 20 medals to take second place overall.

Seven gold, four silver and nine bronze medals were won by the young UAE athletes, a massive improvement on their performance in the previous Championship in 2009 where they returned home with only four.

Ahmad Al Kamali, International Association of Athletics Federation Advocate, praised the efforts being made by the UAE in advancing the sport and advised that there were more improvements still to come.

According to Tami, "the biggest thing for mothers is feeling like they made the choices every step of the way and are not bullied into a decision." In order to help, the women recommend asking the following questions…

1. How often will I expect to see you when I am in labor?

2. If I write out birth preferences, will they be honored? If you are not there for the birth will your partners/other doctors and the rest of staff honor them?

3. Where did you do your training and what qualifications do you hold?

4. What is your birth philosophy?

5. What prenatal testing do you recommend and why?

6. Essentially, the main aim of a doula is to help the mother experience a positive and safe birth, whether natural or cesarean, or simply to be her rock throughout the process.

The first time my husband and I found out that we were pregnant, we were instantly delighted! It wasn’t until a few days later that my mind started to wonder, “What happens now?”

Fortunately, my gynecologist was great, gave us loads of information, acknowledged our decisions and guided us towards a birth that best suited my needs. Many first time mums are not as fortunate. Birth is, in its essence, something of a wild adventure where you should prepare to expect the unexpected! While this is true, and there’s certainly no way to ‘order' the perfect birth from a menu, there are also a lot of ways to prepare yourself for the kind of birth you desire!

We spoke to Tami Sproud and Brooke Bauer, experienced doulas (or labor coaches) from Al Ain to tell us more about pregnancy and what you need to know!

Doulas are professionally trained in childbirth and provide emotional, physical and informational support to expecting mothers. While not trained to offer medical advice, nor being a replacement for medical pre natal care, doula’s are helpful

when it comes to having support. Brooke explains, for example, if a mother needs to know more information about something specific things such as diabetes, "we can give her information on the diabetic testing. What it is? How it works and what the benefits are? What are the risks?"

Doulas form client relationships months before the baby is due. During this time they develop a connection whereby mothers then feel free to ask questions, take an active role in creating a birth preference, and express fears and concerns. Doulas

also make mothers aware that, although they may have a birth preference, it might not always go quite as planned. During delivery, doulas stay with the mothers and have the ability to provide comfort with pain relief

techniques, massage and laboring positions.

Choosing a gynecologist is another aspect that a doula can help you with. Tami and Brooke recommend that you should do your research, speak to friends and visit a few different doctors before deciding who you feel

most comfortable with.

The Source was given the chance to tour some of Cromwell’s facilities with Ms. Noreen Healy, Director of Nursing and Midwifery. The hospital is the only one in the country that offers water birth, a birthing stool, and first class gym and

spa services.

At the forefront of the hospital’s ethos, is the principle that mothers should be in control! The staff aim to give women as much choice during both their pregnancy and delivery as possible, whilst constantly ensuring the safety of mother and baby.

Ms. Noreen explains the dedicated service that the hospital offers expectant mums, “We close the curtains and they can labor in the dark with candlelight, aromatherapy

and music and, for some of the ladies, we put the Quran and they feel very protected."

The labor room has a Zen atmosphere and soon-to-be mums have the option of using a birthing stool and fitness balls to help ease labor pain and facilitate a smooth birth. Expectant mums can also opt for a full water birth or have the option of simply using the pool during labor but giving birth on "dry

For women looking for another alternative to traditional birthing, hypno-birth is one possible option. Hypnosis is the moment when your mind wanders to a state of daydreaming so that it is no longer focused on the motions you may be going through. Hypnosis for birth helps you to relax your body and mind and remove it from the physical experience and escape to another place, a tranquil, peaceful memory of a place. 1. You’ll have far too many clothes! And you probably won’t use half of them! All you really need is

something nice for baby to go home from the hospital in and plenty of sleep suits and vests!

2. Breastfeeding is not easy! It has a lot of benefits but it’s hard work. Don’t put too much

pressure on yourself as that’s not good for you or baby. Stick with it, it will get easier but don’t be too hard on yourself if it doesn’t go according to plan. In the end, the decision about how to feed your baby is yours and yours alone.

3. There is no manual to being the perfect mummy Rather than trying to follow a ‘rule book’, relax, stay

calm and things will fall into place quite naturally to suit both mummy and baby. This is your baby and you, more than anyone, know what is best for them.

4. It’s okay to forget to send thank you notes Remember all those amazing presents you received

for your baby? As much as you appreciate them, you probably won’t get around to sending thank you notes as your whole world has just been turned upside down. Don’t stress – people understand!

5. Your friends will change And that’s okay too! It may come as a surprise to realize that

your circle of friends changes when you have a baby, but it does. Some friends just don’t get that you now need to plan around nap and feeding times and others will stress you out with their parenting ‘advice’. Others will stay the same, inviting baby into the group as though they had always been there! These are the friends who will be around forever.

6. Don’t be afraid to ask for help This works wonders for mummy and baby and gives your

extended family their own bonding time with the little one. Whether you use the time to take a bath, go shopping or go back to the gym, make the most of it and do not feel guilty! If anything, you’re doing them a favor!

7. There’s a lot to think about! So chances are you’re going to forget things! Just make sure

you keep track of milestones, whether in a baby book, diary, blog or on your smartphone; find a way to document those amazing little moments you don’t want forget like the first tooth, first word, first step etc.

8. You’re allowed some 'me' time Honestly, I’m a bit shocked when I hear of parents who have

a five-year-old yet claim they’ve never had a night away from them. We all need to have some alone time or indeed some

couple time. I’m very fortunate in that we have two sets of caring grandparents who love to take our little girl for the evening, whether to let me attend a friend’s wedding, go out to dinner or have a weekend away with my partner.

9. Dads are a great help Before my daughter was born, I worried about how my partner would adjust to being a daddy. But, turns out, it comes as naturally to them as to you. Don’t hover over him, checking he’s doing things properly, just give

him space and let him know you’re around if he needs you.

10. Your life will be totally different It’s hard to explain this one until it happens, but it’s the small

things that make you truly realize you’re a mum. The highlight of your Friday night will now be ordering takeaway and watching your baby on the monitor; your top priorities won’t be deadlines or spreadsheets but what your baby last ate and when they should nap. You’ll happily leave the house without lipstick on but panic if you leave the soother at home and daily blow-dry’s will become a thing of the past as you realize that time is just too darn precious!

Motherhood is the hardest yet best job you’ll ever have! Now go enjoy this crazy, wonderful, exhausting, magical journey….I know I am!

No matter how many books you read, classes you attend or advice you take, nothing can truly prepare you for motherhood until it happens. Here’s a few things I’ve discovered since bringing my daughter into the world…

New Year’s Eve is a bit like Valentine’s Day for women. They want it to be exceptional, perfect and a night of escapism. For men, it’s not such a big deal and the thought of ‘staying in’ and ordering takeaway may have crossed your mind more than once. Thoughts of

ridiculously expensive entry fees and crazy long taxi queues may see you eyeing your X-box and hankering for a Chinese. My advice to you, forget that and get on board with your woman…

You’ll end up doing what she wants

So you may as well just agree from the start and avoid any arguments. Let her know that it’s not really your thing, and ask what she would like you to do to make it a fun night for her. You don’t want to finish the year off on a fight, so go along with it. You may

even enjoy it!

PLAN AHEAD Okay, so it isn’t a big deal for you but, if you do throw together a plan for the evening, you’re

bound to score big brownie points. Detail everything: transport, tickets, drinks, food and, if you do resort to staying in, make sure she knows it won’t be a night in front of the TV but a fun night in the company of those you love spending time with.

HEARTS AND ROMANCENew Year’s Eve is traditionally a romantic time, especially in the eyes of your woman. Don’t think of that as extra pressure; instead think of it as a day where you get to be romantic without too much effort. At the stroke of midnight, make sure your attention

is entirely on her – one of the whole concepts of New Year is having that special someone to share it with. Plus, what better way to start of 2013 than hand-in-hand with your partner?

WATCH WHAT YOU SAYNo matter what you think, don’t ever say out loud that ‘it’s just another night’. Make the night special and she’ll feel special too, and you never know…you might just have the greatest New Year so far!

explaining, “It gave me a general idea about starting a business and designing identities and publications.” Not only did she learn design principles, she was taught other elements integral to her success such as marketing, client relations and advertising procedures.

Her unique selling point, or USP if you will, is her ability to extend her talent for illustration using InDesign software. “I merged my illustration skills with In-design, it's my unique point. InDesign

opened my mind to explore more in illustration. It's like they complete each other" she explains.

Initially, Shaima worked on projects for individual clients that she sourced via friends and acquaintances. One day, her sister recommended her for a project at the Ministry of Education and she was accepted to illustrate Islamic books for first and second grade teaching. The project took a lot of work, “It was the longest project I’ve worked on” explains Shaima, but it turned out to be worth the effort, “When I saw the results…I was very happy!” she smiles.

After this, there was no looking back. Taking part in Character Dubai 2009 put her firmly on the map as an illustrator while achieving first place in the 2010 Sheikh Majid Media Awards with her design ‘Dubai now and tomorrow’ fuelled her passion further and propelled her to create a website from which she

28-year-old Shaima Al Malik is a loving mother. She has two adorable little boys who are her world, and a loving husband on whom she dotes. Her parents play a major role in her life and they would no doubt describe her as a loving daughter. She also takes her role as a responsible daughter-in-law very seriously, striving to find time for both her immediate and extended family. On top of all of this, Shaima is an extremely talented graphic designer and prolific creative illustrator. Successfully merging work, life, mum and wife is no easy task but it seems to be something in which Shaima excels.

Ever since she was a child, Shaima loved to draw. She would fill her books with doodles and sketches, and always had a pencil in her hand. As she grew older, the young woman decided that her future lay in illustration and enrolled on the Applied Media Studies course at Dubai Women’s College. From here, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree with distinction in honors and began taking on freelance projects.

She now holds an Intelaq professional licence from the Department of Economic Development in Dubai, helping her to become one of only a few young, Emirati females who are making a name for themselves from the comfort of their own home.

or projects that she finds exciting. It also fits in well with her role as a doting mum, “Freelancing is very flexible, I enjoy working at home, with no time limits, where I can work whenever I'm in the mood and yet watch my kids at the same time.”

Freelancing also allows Shaima to be out of the office environment which helps her draw inspiration from everything around her. Her field is very competitive so a spark of inspiration can be the difference in making her stand out from the crowd. She also constantly reminds herself to “be unique, different and memorable.” Her kids provide her with inspiration with their daily antics and observations, as well as keeping her truly busy!

Effortlessly fitting into today’s ‘working mother’ category, Shaima is an inspiration to others out there who want to have both a family and a career. Her ambition has not been quenched by her recent success and she speaks about her future plans of owning her own store stocking stationery designed by herself.

Hoping to learn from such an ambitious young woman, I ask Shaima for some life lessons…

While she is now in a strong position, Shaima’s journey wasn’t without error. Her first year saw her toil hard to create a benchmark for herself but, “during the second year, I experienced a lot of ups and downs. Lots of mistakes from my side as well as lots of unsound situations from clients.” These setbacks didn’t keep the ambitious woman down; instead she chose to utilize them the best way she could, “I simply learnt from these experiences.”

She continues to learn, believing in the importance of media forums in helping artists and designers both showcase their work and “see other people’s work and learn from your competitors”. Her website has been a strong pillar in supporting her career, and she advises budding designers to take heed, “my website played a huge role in advertising my work; people saw my online portfolio and were interested in working with me.”

Focusing on his acting, Maher explains a little about the variety of characters he has successfully played in various drama series. His work on popular Syrian-Iraqi drama ‘J’reesh wa M’reesh’, as well as the drama ‘The Red Line’ allowed him to showcase his acting skills to the world.

Right now, Maher is almost ready to start shooting scenes in a new movie, entitled ‘Situations are like this’ set in Dubai and tackling interesting and daring topics that many other moviemakers shy away form. In the movie, he plays the character of a poor man who struggles to make ends meet for his mother and sister until he meets a man who promises to help him. Another movie, with which Maher was involved, was entitled ‘The Mother’ and featured in the Oman Film Festival. Maher believes that this movie was solely high quality material which, he explains, is exactly what viewers deserve.

As well as his showcasing his talents, Maher believes strongly in contributing to society. He has worked tirelessly in association with Sawsan Jomaa, director of events company Glamour, in order to organize various events where the profits go direct to charity. Other humanitarian projects in which he has been heavily involved have included working with Suzan Najmuldeen, Waffaa Mouselli and Tolay Haron. The very first Najah festival, back in 2006, was another of Maher’s charitable projects as was the 2007 Sudanese Community Festival. His efforts have not gone unrecognized and he has received commendation from UAE University, The Red Crescent Society, Al Fajr Newspaper and The Children’s Cancer Hospital in Egypt.

In a journey combining singing, acting, advertising, modeling and even party planning, Syrian artist Maher Al Sheikh has managed 'in a few short years' to make a name for himself in the UAE’s artistic scene. His love for singing is what kick started his boundless talent, as he began singing in the emirates back

in 2003. His very first album, entitled ‘Charming’ was produced and released here by Al Jazeera Voice nine years ago and includes a variety of songs, featuring remarkable diversity. Maher’s starting point has been the garden city of Al Ain from where he has been a central part of a whole host of concerts and events throughout the country.

At present, Maher Al Sheikh is working hard on a special project. He is adding the final touches on a song written by HH Sheikh Obaid Bin Suhail Al Maktoum. His warm voice eerily captures the meaningful lyrics of the song and his pride in the project is unmistakable.

After a long absence, during which Maher was recovering from health complications, the young artist is back on the scene with two new songs. The first is entitled ‘Al Fustan Al Zahri’ and was composed according to the principles of Syrian folklore, arranged by Awad Rajab and produced by an international company. His other song, entitled ‘Candle of my presence’ was penned by poet Rashed Al Thanli, composed by Maher himself, arranged by Fotoh Radi and directed by Ahmed Bin Salari before being produced by Mix Music.

Bursting with energy about his new songs, Maher also boasts a brand new look after undergoing hair transplant surgery. Speaking to the singer, his enthusiasm is clearly evident, “I thank God for the success that I’ve achieved in my work and for the fact that I didn’t face any significant challenges in my artistic journey. I consider myself very lucky, both the Emirati and Syrian media have supported me.” He makes a nod to his heritage and the importance it has played in his life, explaining “the Syrian folk music inspired the song ‘The Red Sweater’ and helped to introduce me to the Arab audience as a singer and I think that it helped me to pass through media channels without too much hindrance.” It’s produced by me and arranged by Fadi Al Sayegh, moreover my songs ‘Charming’ and ‘Where are you my love?’ helped me to gain appreciation across both the UAE and the Gulf.”

ABOUT AL AIN CONVENTION CENTREAl Ain Convention Centre is a one place that hosts many events and activities, it built in a unique architectural style, complete with a marquee-roof. The centre truly captures traditional Arabian design and blends it with all the modernity required to offer a first class venue. With both indoor and outdoor spaces, it has year-round appeal and you can find a wealth of activities taking place in the 20,000sq m event space. AACC building consists from two halls, link area and auditorium.

AL KHABISI HALL 1 has an area of 6,600sqm; it’s a popular destination for local weddings only with refund deposit after wedding. Dividable into two sections the hall has been one of the most popular wedding venues in Alain for a number of years. It also can host different exhibitions but the main business for this hall is “Weddings”. Nestled between the towering buildings on Abu Dhabi’s Al Muroor Road is the pink and white candy striped shop known as Mama’s Cupcakes. Creating an enticing atmosphere and using unique recipes with a taste of home baking are what ‘Mama’, or Faiza

Taha as she is otherwise known, is all about. The retired school administrator is now a successful entrepreneur and we grabbed a few minutes of her time to find out just exactly what makes Mama’s Cupcakes special.

How did you come up with the idea of Mama’s Cupcakes?Since my childhood in Lebanon I loved baking. It’s a hobby, so I thought, why not do something, that I love, to fill my time with?

How did you choose the name Mama’s Cupcakes?I’m the Mama but my daughter Aida, who owns Café Arabia, sells my cakes and she always writes Mum’s cakes on her menu. So, I thought Mama’s Cupcakes. Besides, when Mama makes something, she always makes it from her heart.

What experience do you have in the food business?I opened La Quebrada, a Spanish themed restaurant, in 2001. It means 'where the wave splashes' but unfortunately, after four years, the landlord asked me to vacate the premises. I’ve also always loved cooking and always tried to think of new food to make for my family.

What sets Mama’s Cupcakes apart from all the other cupcake shops in town?The homemade taste makes my cupcakes different. If I make carrot cake, I may add spices that are different to the other cupcake shops. Often customers try to guess the ingredients and sometimes I tell them whether they are right. Even when they know, they always

come back to try something new.

The store is very cute, how did you come up with the design?I initially asked a designer to sketch a plan for me but I wasn’t convinced. I called in the carpenter and designed it my own way. At first I was confused as to whether to make the walls plain pink or not. I asked the painter to paint strips of different shades of pink on the wall but I didn’t like them. I wanted it bright so I asked him to add white stripes with the pink. It makes the shop look bigger.

Who does the baking?When I try a new recipe out, for the first time, the staff watch and they write the recipe in their books. After that, they can make them but they call me if they have even a tiny doubt.

What were some of the challenges you faced?Firstly, it was difficult getting the startup paperwork processed because of all the red tape. The procedure is much more difficult; now there are a lot of extra requirements. It’s more difficult to open up a food business than any other because of all the rules and regulations. Secondly, the interior decorators never keep to their word. They tell you that they’ll finish up within a specified time but you have to double that time. You have to be patient and follow up regularly.

Was it difficult to find the capital for your business?My policy is to pay for all expenses in cash and not borrow from the bank. This shop, including the fixtures and fittings, cost me around AED150000. I was fortunate that I could use some of the equipment from my previous restaurant which definitely helped save on expenses.

What are some of the important elements needed to make a small business a success?You have to know and understand the type of business you intend to go into. It’s important that you have information and knowledge about the business. Also, if you want your business to be successful you must be determined and work hard.

What future plans do you have for Mama’s Cupcakes?I’m planning to expand into Al Ain very soon. I have many customers in Al Ain who love my cupcakes. They drive all the way from Al Ain to buy them to take back home.

And with that, Mama had to get back to her baking! Although not before giving me a delicious taste of her cupcakes, scrumptious! I can safely say that I, for one, can’t wait to see the candy striped store make its way to the Garden City.

Chocolate Cupcakes Ingredients2 cups all-purpose flour | 2 cups sugar | 1/2 tsp baking powder | 1 tsp salt | 1 tsp baking soda| 1/2 cup shortening3/4 cup water | 2 large eggs | 3/4 cup milk | 1 tsp vanilla extract | 4 ounces melted & unsweetened baking chocolate | Chocolate frosting | Colored sprinkles

Method• Pre-heat oven to 350° C. Line cupcake pans with paper

liners.• In a large mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients and

mix at medium-high speed for 3 minutes.• Fill liners 1/2 to 2/3 full of batter. Bake 20-25 minutes or

until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.• Cool 10 minutes in pans and then place cupcakes on a

wire rack to cool completely.• Frost cupcakes and decorate with colorful sprinkles.

Mama's Special Carrot Cupcakes Ingredients225g carrots washed and grated | 100g raisins | 50g chopped walnuts 150g all-purpose flour | 120g vegetable oil | 130g caster sugar | 3 medium eggs | 1 cup orange juice | 1 tsp vanilla extract | 1 tsp baking powder | 1 tsp bicarbonate soda | 2 tsp cinnamon powder | 1 tsp nutmeg | 1 orange zest | lemon zest | pinch of salt

Method• Pre-heat oven to 250° C. Line cupcake pans with paper liners. • In a large bowl, sift flour, baking powder, bicarbonate soda, salt, cinnamon

and nutmeg. Add raisins and walnuts.• Beat eggs, vanilla extract, caster sugar, orange and lemon zest until smooth.

Pour oil in gradually and continue beating until fluffy.• Combine the dry and wet mixtures. Add the orange juice and mix well.• Add the grated carrots and mix thoroughly.• Fill liners 1/2 to 2/3 full of batter. Bake 20-25 minutes or until toothpick

inserted in center comes out clean.• Cool 10 minutes in the pans and then place cupcakes on a

wire rack to cool completely.• Decorate with white, orange and green whipped cream.

An Undomesticated Goddess at

After a long week of laborious examination where we obtained ‘sustenance’ from a variety of fast food places, my husband finally protested that a home-cooked meal was in order. Steak and chips would have been my choice, being an undomesticated goddess, but he had something more wholesome in mind.

"Let's go to Mina Port Fish Market for some fresh crab, I'm craving crab curry," he suggested. So, donning my oldest pair of jeans, beaten Crocs and a slight pang of apprehension, we made our way to the port.

As we drove to the bustling market area, set against a backdrop of fishing boats, the sounds of people haggling, shouting and declaring the catch of the day filled the air. I could tell the fish were going to be fresh, but I was still dreading the smell. Walking into the market, I was instantly surprised by the cleanliness. The smell was in no-way overpowering; in fact it was distinctly akin to the fish counter of our local supermarket. The choice of fresh seafood was amazing, squid, clams, prawns, crab and hammour to name a few. After walking around, we stumbled across a stall selling two types of crab, blue crab and an orange/red variety and here our transaction took place...

Me: Can I have 1kg of crabs?Vendor: Would you like the male or the female?Me: I'm not sure, what do you suggest?Vendor: The females, they have a better taste.Me: Females, it is!Vendor: 25 Dirhams, ma'am.Bargain!

As my husband waited for the crabs, I ventured to the left-wing of the building where I was delighted to discover an array of

stalls offering cooking services for your freshly bought seafood: fry, grill or bake your fish for only AED10 per kilo. If only I’d known! Next time I told myself, as for now there's no getting out of cooking these crabs myself!

On December 31st, as the rest of the world celebrates New Year’s Eve, those visiting Edinburgh, Scotland’s chilly capital, will be celebrating Hogmanay! Synonymous with New Year celebrations, Hogmanay is the Scottish name for the last day of the year and the country has a reputation for being one of the top places in the world in which to bring in the coming year. Celebrations kick off on the 31st and continue well into the next day or even into the wee hours of the 2nd, which is also a public holiday across the

country. Whether you hit the infamous street party, bag tickets to the concert in the gardens, join the torchlight procession or simply go ‘first-footing’, New Year in Edinburgh is a magical affair.

Arriving in Edinburgh’s international airport, you’re only about 8 miles out from the city center. Hop on one of the many shuttle buses or grab a cab to take you to the heart of the Capital.

The party in the Gardens is a music and firework extravaganza set in magnificently landscaped winter gardens which this year, will see Simple Minds, The View and Bwani Junction entertain revelers. For those seeking a bit of Scottish tradition, head along to The Keilidh to birl your way into 2013 with live music and traditional dancing. Hourly firework displays countdown to the world famous Midnight Fireworks, which light up the city as people link arms and perform the traditional ‘Auld Lang Syne’.

January 1st is a public holiday and the party continues with the Queensferry Loony Dook. For over a quarter of a century, many brave souls have braved the Scottish weather, donned costumes and

plunged themselves into the icy cold waters of the River Forth. Even if you’re not taking part, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity! New Year's Day is also a time when people get together with friends and family to enjoy a huge dinner of steak pie, mushy

peas and potatoes before heading to their neighbor's homes for a spot of ‘first-footing’ a tradition that supposedly brings good fortune for the coming year.

Wherever you go in Edinburgh at New Year you’re bound to have a fantastic time. As the home of Hogmanay, when it comes to throwing a party, no one does it quite like the Scots!
