This Friday is our first Whole School Staffing Day—”My Journey”. We will be looking at things through the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander’s perspective, and activities including Anti-Bullying, Art Dance, Writing and Games. Children can come dressed in sensible everyday clothes and joggers. Children also need to return notes and money for the ADAMRIGINAL Show (the school is subsidising this—please see the note on the following page). Thanks to Mr. Wells for organising the visit to DCS from the Hunter School of the Performing Arts High School Band. The children really enjoyed the concert. Please check for Nits as we have had a few cases reported to us. Thanks Mrs. M. Abbott Kindergarten: Welcome to Week 6. I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend and in particular, the Dunedoo Show. Kinder’s Jolly Phonic Sounds this week are ‘l’, ‘f’ and ‘b’ and our shared big book is ‘Pirate Treasure’. In Maths, our topics are Day and Night, Longer and Shorter time, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow and Days of the Week. In HSIE we are discussing the things we like to do and the things we would like to do really well. This Friday is our first Whole School Staffing Day which should be great fun. Please remember to fill in the permission note and send in the money ASAP (refer to the newsletter for the note). Well done to those children progressing through their sight words. Parents, please remember to go back through their past sets of workds to ensure they have retained this knowledge. It is also a good idea to point out known sight words when the children are reading to you. Congratulations to Shelley Cox, our student from last week and to Will Kline and Asha Russell who received merit certificates. Mrs. E. Yeo

Year 1/2: Welcome to Week 7. I hope you all enjoyed the Show. This week in Spelling, Year 1 will study the ‘ar’ sound as in ‘hard’ and ‘card’. Year 2 will study the ‘ea’ sound as in ‘head’ and ‘bread’. In Maths, Year 1 will learn about Time—Months of the Year, O’Clock and Reading Digital Clocks. Year 2 will be graphing their Birthdays and learning about Subtraction to Ten and Counting Back. The children will continue on with their Water Unit with Mrs. Cluff and we will be starting Mathletics in Computers this Wednesday. It was great to see so many more children at Homework Centre last week but there is still a lot of homework outstanding. I will also be contacting some parents about Home Readers!!!! (These should be changed on a regular basis!) Have a great week. Mrs. M. Abbott

Welcome to Week 7. I hope you all enjoyed the show! What a day we had Friday with the Hunter School of Performing Arts Marching Band performing for our students and then com-ing into our classrooms. It was wonderful! I think most students were fascinated with the sousaphone! We completed our Clean Up Australia Day activities on Thursday. The playground is looking great. Thanks to all students for helping keep our school clean. Congratulations to Ben Gallagher and Mia Gallagher on their selection for the Western team to compete at the NSWPSSA State Swimming Championships. Well done to all of our swimmers who represented our district so well at the Regional Swim-ming Carnival last Friday. There will be no swimming for sport this Friday due to the Whole School Staffing Day and our visiting performance. Cheers Joel Wilson—Assistant Principal Primary

Year 2/3: Hello all. It was great to see everyone at the Dunedoo Show on the weekend. I hope you had a chance to see our class scarecrow in the Pavilion. The kids did a wonderful job putting it together and we’re going to find it a permanent home in our classroom (maybe our 26th classmate!). Over the last few weeks, we have been studying the famous story of Waltzing Matilda. Students have written descriptive para-graphs of the swagman, made audio recordings on the school iPods and sketched the swagman camped by the billabong. This week students will finish writing their narratives in which the class has been given the start of the story but needs to come up with a new ending. The only catch is that the swagman cannot jump into the billabong and drown...I look forward to seeing the results! This week’s news topic is ‘My Favourite Sport’. Have a great week. Mr. Ben Kline Year 4/5: Hello everybody! What a weekend! I hope you all enjoyed the Dunedoo Show and in particular our class dis-play of our ideal family farm. Well done to all the students who completed their farm. A gentle reminder is needed for those students who have not yet borrowed from the school library. Our library day is every Wednesday. It is very important that your child reads at home each night. We are very lucky here at Dunedoo that we have such a great librarian in Mdme. Abbott who is always willing to help students choose an appropriate book to borrow. Don’t forget that Book Fair is currently on at D.C.S and is open for another week. A good idea for your child(ren) would be to do chores at home and earn some pocket money so they could buy something at the Book Fair. Also, well done to all for our Friday sport swimmers. It is great to see so many students giving it a go, and I am also pleased to see many students improving their swimming style. Only a couple of weeks left in the swimming season so get in while you still can! Have a great week. Mr A Honeysett Year 5/6: I will be away for Western Region Sport and a NAPLAN course Wednesday-Friday this week. During this time Miss Watson will be teaching my class. Year 5 maths are continuing fractions this week—and placing them on a number line! Some students were surprised that frac-tions were real numbers, just like 1, 2 and 3! You can help at home by demonstrating fractions when cooking, shopping, meas-uring, etc. Joel Wilson

Year 6 Maths: This week students will be working on Fractions, Decimals & Percentages. Students must practice their times-tables at home. It is important that students practice their times table by ROTE (eg. 3x1 is 3, 3 x 2 is 6, 3x3 is 9…), as this is the best method for recall, rather than skip counting eg. 3, 6, 9, 12 etc. The homework sheet is due in on Thursday. “Well Done!” to all of those students who have been submitting their homework each week! Mrs Donna Lane

Notice for my Junior/Senior Boys Cricket Team: We have a game versus Gulgong Public School on the 20th March (Week 8) in Gulgong at Bill Dunn Park Synthetic Pitch. The Game will start at 10am and we should be back at school by 3pm for buses. A note will go home with further information for boys in the team.

This year Dunedoo Central School was outstandingly represented by eight contestants at the Lions Youth of the Year Quest. The students were: Effie Fergusson, Taylah Watton-Hogden, Ethan Adams, Kate Gallagher, Sam Foran, Dan Lane, Kyle Smith and Taylah Inglis.

The aim of the quest is to develop excellent leadership, citizenship, public speaking and general knowledge. This is achieved in three main ways.

Firstly, all contestants have to fill in an in-depth application form where information relating to social, cultural, leadership and academic credentials is required.

Secondly, on Wednesday 5th March 2014 all candidates were interviewed by a panel comprising Max Neal, Gail Yeo and How-ard Harrison. This interview process tested students in areas such as general knowledge, knowledge of current affairs issues, general interview aptitude and personality. This process also comprises 80 marks towards the Quest. All students carried them-selves extremely well during this process and the panel commented on what excellent ambassadors they each were for their school and community.

The third and final aspect of the Quest is public speaking. On Thursday 6th March 2014 all candidates were required to speak on two impromptu topics as well as a five minute prepared speech on a topic of their choice. This process comprises 30 marks towards the Quest. On the night, held at the Dunedoo Sports Club, all students spoke in an accomplished and professional manner. The impromptu topics were:

Are computer games too violent? Has man contributed to global warming?

All candidates spoke well off the cuff, but Ethan Adams was a particular standout in this section. He spoke with great confi-dence, authority and elaboration of ideas.

The prepared speech topics were quite diverse, encompassing issues such as the city / country divide, media representation of the drought, the role and impact of social media, Usain Bolt, homework, Australian Squash’s decision not to field a national team and gun control.

The two winners overall were Effie Fergusson and Ethan Adams and both will compete at the next level on the 23rd March 2014.

As coach and adviser, I could not be more proud of this outstanding group of young men and women. Each was an outstanding credit to themselves, each other, family, school and community.

A sincere thanks goes out to the panel (Max Neal, Gail Yeo, Howard Harrison) and Tony Yeo.

Last Monday year 11 attended the annual RYDA road safety program. The day consisted of a series of activities related to road safety. These included issues related to fatigue and alcohol, how to choose a

car, hazard awareness, legal responsibilities and fines, the effect of speed on stopping distances and the impact of road accidents. The students found the day interest-

ing and very worthwhile. They particularly enjoyed the talk by the road acci-dent victim who sustained a serious brain injury and were moved by the impact this has had on his life. They also en-joyed the stopping distances activity as they got to travel in the car as the driver slammed on the brakes at 40, 50, 60 and 80 km/h. Some enjoyed this experience more than others!!
