Another STEM challenge involved students designing and drawing an invention that would support the sustainability of our waterways. If we had the expertise (and the $$) to back the inventions our students thought of, our water issues would be resolved! If you pop in to the front office, have a look at the designs on display! Although there were teams who earned more points than others on the day, that was not the important part. Every student worked wonderfully with the tasks they were given, and it was a fantastic, fun-filled day for all involved.

    31st August 2020 WEEK 7

K-6 celebrated National Science Week by exploring the 2020 theme: Deep Blue—Innovations for the fu-

ture of our oceans. A marine theme ran throughout the day, from playing Sharks and Fishes (bulrush), to

having to catch ‘fish’ from a bucket. Students worked individually and in teams to earn points for their

team. A highlight of the day was definitely the STEM challenge in which each team had to build a bridge

50cm wide and 50 cm high using only newspaper and masking tape. The structure also had to be able to

support an egg placed on the bridge by judges. Another STEM challenge involved students designing and

drawing an invention that would support the sustainability of our waterways. If we had the expertise (and

the $$) to back the inventions our students thought of, our water issues would be resolved! If you pop in

to the front office, have a look at the designs on display!

Although there were teams who earned more points than others on the day, that was not the important

part. Every student worked wonderfully with the tasks they were given, and it was a fantastic, fun-filled

    day for all involved.

    Wear your favourite Jersey!

Jersey Day has been inspired by the story of 13 year old Nathan Gremmo, who was tragically

lost in an accident in 2015. Nathan's family chose to give the gift of life to others to honour the

    legacy of Nathan's generous personality.

Jersey Day is not about raising funds - it is all about raising awareness for The Organ & Tissue

Authority and the DonateLife Network. The intention is to begin the discussion about Organ &

Tissue Donation, fill social media with Jersey Day images and to encourage people to visit the

donatelife.gov.au website to register their Organ & Tissue Donation intentions.

  • Welcome to Week 7 Term 3,

2020 Teacher Aide Appreciation Week - this week is the national celebration of Teacher Aides. This

is an opportunity to acknowledge the important role of teacher aides, whose hard work and dedica-

tion make a difference to students, teachers and the school community. Tomorrow we will have a

morning tea to celebrate both our SLSOs and SASS staff at Dunedoo Central School.

Yr 12 Major Works—Congratulations to our Yr 12 Industrial Technology and Textiles &

Design students on the completion of their Major Work projects. Thank you to Mrs

Douglass, and Mr Louwen for their work, particularly over the last few weeks in sup-

porting students to complete their projects on time.

Skool Loop App - Thank you to everyone who has downloaded our Skool Loop App. We

have had a number of people utilising the App to inform school about student absences,

which is fantastic. Our Newsletter is also uploaded each week for you to read.

Tell Them From Me - I would like to encourage all families to fill in the Tell Them From

Me Survey. It is important for our school to consult with families and gain feedback in re-

lation to their child’s education. You only need to fill in the survey once. You may choose

one of your children to fill in the survey for or if you wish to you may complete it for a

more than one child. The link is available on our school Facebook Page and on the Skool

Loop App or go to: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/survey/splash/vsctq

Check-in Assessment - This week students from years 5 and 9 will complete the online

    reading and numeracy assessment.

COVID-19—HSC Students can now have their COVID-19 test results fast tracked to reduce

disruption to their studies. Students just need to say they are a HSC student when taking

    the test.

Students are not required to physically distance or wear a mask while in schools under

    the AHPPC guidelines.

Given that the HSC exams are fast approaching and to minimize disruption during this

period, additional precautionary measures should be taken by Year 12 students and

their families while outside of school and in the wider community. This includes:

    Stay 1.5m apart where possible

Wear a mask if physical distancing isn’t possible

Get tested asap if they have even the mildest of symptoms

Tell the clinician doing the test they are a Year 12 student and to mark the referral ‘Urgent - HSC

    student’

Stay home and self-isolate until results are known

Receive a negative test result before returning to school; showing the

school a screenshot of an SMS result is sufficient

Call the contact number provided by the clinic if results are not received

    within 36 hours

    Have a great week

  • Welcome to Week 7—which is Teacher’s Aide Appreciation Week! We are so lucky here at DCS to have some of the

most proactive, caring and dedicated Teacher’s Aides working to ensure all students have the opportunity to achieve

at school. A big shout out to all the Teacher’s Aides for the fantastic work you do!

Last week our FISH focus was on wearing uniforms. Most students

earned tickets for remembering to wear their full school

uniform each day. Well done to all who earned a ticket or

more last week. Henry Brougham was the lucky ticket

holder drawn out this morning for wearing his uniform.

Congratulations Henry! This week’s FISH focus is from the

Play element, and is ‘Challenge Yourself’. Students are

encouraged to challenge themselves to have a go at some-

thing and do their very best. It may involve learning a new

skill, or beating a personal best in writing, spelling or

maths. It may even involve being brave and having a go at

something that you aren’t sure you can do. We never know

    until we try!

Students are looking forward to Healthy Harold visiting on

Thursday and Friday. Many students have returned their

notes, but we are still waiting on a few more. Healthy Har-

old shares a very important message with our students,

and builds on topics learned in PDH. Students always love

    it when Harold visits!

Coming in to Spring time our gardens around the school

are looking fantastic, and we’ve had a number of students

volunteer to assist with weeding, watering and planting.

It’s so nice to see students helping to take care of our

school, and it’s making such a difference.

SRC have been reminding students that Friday is Jersey

Day, where students can wear their favourite footy team

jersey. If your child does not have one, then school uni-

form as normal is fine. There is no gold coin donation for

    Jersey Day.

    Have a great week everyone!

This week in Mathematics we are designing our own die and spinners, conducting simulations and recording results.

We will then compare the experimental results with the theoretical probabilities and investigate if these differ with

increased trials. Congratulations to Chloe Brown who was the winner of our latest weekly homework raffle, drawn

today. Please encourage your child to complete their weekly homework assignment and hand it in by Thursday each

week in order to receive a ‘raffle ticket’. I would still like to see more students handing their homework in on a more

    regular basis.

    Mrs Cathy Gallagher

    Dear Parents,

Your ideas, opinions and voice is very much valued

and will help drive our school’s directions for im-

  • Mr Hall’s classes... Year 12 Advanced English— Year 12 have recently completed their Trial HSC Exams and now have a

realistic conception of what to expect in their final HSC Exams for Advanced English. Content-wise,

students are currently studying Module B: Critical Study of Literature. Their prescribed text is the

George Clooney directed film Good Night, and Good Luck. This film explores notions of freedom of

speech, media manipulation and government corruption. It has a 1950’s setting in the United States

amidst the Communist ‘Witch Trials’ conducted by US Senator Joseph McCarthy. The film is shot en-

tirely in black and white to evoke the era and it incorporates archival footage from the time that

blends seamlessly with the theatrical elements contained within.

Year 12 Modern History— Year 12 have recently completed their Trial HSC Exams and now have a

realistic conception of what to expect in their final HSC Exam for Modern History. Students are cur-

rently engaged in Section 4 of the course content known as Change in the Modern World. The option

being studied from this section of the syllabus is Civil Rights in the USA 1945-1968. Students have

been exploring the various inequalities that existed for African-Americans at this time through legislat-

ed segregation and discrimination. They have also been engaged in the study of key figures of the pe-

riod including Martin Luther King Jnr, Malcolm X and Rosa Parks who championed equality for African-

Americans and who were instrumental in leading the charge for the wider civil rights movement.

Year 11 Standard English— Year 11 have been engaged in their Close Study of

Text unit. The Prescribed text is the film Little Miss Sunshine. Students are study-

ing the film at a technical level (analysing how various film techniques have been

manipulated by the directors in order to communicate key themes and messages

to the viewing audience.) The concept of Journey has been the specific focus of

the study. Students are in the process of completing a written analytic essay and

preparing for their Yearly Exams commencing in Week 9.

    Mr Hall

Afternoon study for secondary students this week will be on Wednesday

with Mrs Gallagher & Thursday with Mrs Hogden. Afternoon study is in

    Room 10 and runs from approximately 3:15 - 4:30pm.

Senior students are especially encouraged to attend with the upcoming HSC

Examinations and Year 11 Preliminary Exams in Weeks 9 and 10 this term.

Nomination forms for 2021 School Captains were handed out to interested Year 11 students yesterday and the roles and responsibilities of the captains were outlined. Nomination forms are to be returned to the Front Office by recess next Monday, 7th September.
