Folklorico Programs in the Schools

with Julio Bustos

Clovis Unified School District has the highest percentage of folklórico programs in any district from Central California: Three High schools, two middle schools and five elementary schools boast of very strong folklorico programs. Why is Folklorico so popular with our administrators? What does it take to get a program going? Where is the curriculum? How do we get our folklórico students to get PE credit? Is it possible to make a folklórico class part of the UC/CSU entrance requirements? These are the questions that will be answered in this seminar by Julio Bustos, a 30 year veteran teacher, who currently directs the Clovis West folklórico program.

Did you know? We have over 1300 participants attending DUF 2014!  With the increased numbers of LARGE groups attending, we realize the need for coordination to ensure a safe and harmonious place for everyone.  We know that many of you would like to bring your portable canopies to provide a place of respite for your dancers, families & chaperones.  There are plenty of places on campus, other than the areas designated for Mercado and the Grass Amphitheater please see map), where you can set up a portable canopy limit 2 per group) and use it as a home base for your group.   This will be on a first come first serve basis and CANOPIES CANNOT BE LEFT ON CAMPUS OVERNIGHT.

We only ask that you be mindful that we are guests on campus and that you leave the area as clean as you found it.  You are also welcome to bring in food, however, school district policy does not allow personal cooking apparatuses such as portable grills or stoves.  On-campus food preparation is strictly reserved for our vendors as they are in a controlled environment.  If you would like to use a portable grill or stove there is a public park—Tice Park—right across the street from the school.    We would like to remind you though, that our Mercado Coordinator, Amber Valdez, has made every effort to bring in plenty of food vendors with options for every taste and budget.  If you have any questions, please contact our DUF Facilities Coordinator, Richard Delgado at [email protected] .  Gracias.

Page 9: DUF 2014 Information Packet

FREE • DUF 2014 BONUS (super-secret) Master Classes!! • FREE

DUF 2014 is pleased to announce that as a special THANK YOU to group directors we are offering THREE (3) bonus Master Classes on Friday, April 11 from noon to 3pm. This bonus class is offered to Directors & Assistant Directors of ‘REGISTERED’ groups as a THANK YOU from us for registering your group. Registration for any of these classes is by RSVP ONLY to [email protected]

Jose Tena Las Cruces, NM Chihuahua

Sergio Sartiaguin Tepic, Nayarit, MX Sinaloa

Miguel Ponce Houston, TX Tamaulipas

You may ask—“How do I qualify for this fantastic offer?”. . .

1) You must be a Group Director of a Registered Group - a group is four persons or more registered for DUF 2014 Workshops.

2) You MUST RSVP by midnight (we like midnight deadlines) April 9. Send your message with subject header ”DUF 2014 Master Class” to [email protected] and clearly state your name and affiliation (that is your ‘registered group’ name) and include a cell phone number so that we can text you the shhhhh-secret location.

3) You must actually SHOW UP by the start of class or you forfeit to an eager body on the wait list.

But wait, what’s this about a wait list? Well, in order to maximize the learning potential, we are offering spots on the wait list for additional assistant directors or dancers who are not directors to join in. Of course, you must be a DUF 2014 Registrant, not just some random folklorico dancer who happens by. Be sure to include a cell phone number where we can text you of your acceptance.

We are very glad to offer this special gift in appreciation to group directors who in addition to toiling all year long still find the time to organize their dancers to attend the Danzantes Unidos Festival.

We salute you!

PS Please do not show up at Clovis West HS looking for the workshops because we won’t be there and there is a strict protocol regarding campus visitors during school hours. Please do not show up without a reservation because there will be a check-in list at the door of these four, separate and unique locations.

Page 10: DUF 2014 Information Packet

Lunch will be served for those in attendance. Kindly, RSVP by midnight April 9th at [email protected] to register your university for this great opportunity by providing:

• Your group name • University • Names of your representatives • Email address • Phone number

Attention University Folklorico Groups!

The third annual University Folklorico Summit luncheon will take place on Saturday April 12, 2014 at 12 p.m. at Clovis West High School Cafeteria. Two or three representatives from your university are invited to participate in an interactive discussion panel to discuss University Folklorico Summit 2015 and the future of collegiate folklorico.

Danzantes Unidos is active YEAR-round! We invite YOU to get involved

FOLKLORICO-ON-WHEELS . . .Bringing DUF Maestros to your doorstep

The Folklorico On Wheels Project was founded in 1994 to provide quality, educational training at the local level. Folklorico On Wheels offers movement classes, lectures, costume showings, visual art workshops, dance presentations and musical recitals. Each event is preconceived in conjunction with the host community and can range from a half or whole day to full weekend event. Because of the downscale in size when compared to the Danzantes Unidos Festival, FOW can offer its participants a more intimate setting. Emphasis is placed on providing participants with intensive training tailored to local needs.

A typical weekend would include six classes divided by age, level, region or theme and might include:

• Repertoire from any of Mexico's 31 states and federal district • Repertoire for students, educators, group directors & seniors • Thematic material for Day of the Dead, Fiestas & Celebrations • Evening showcase in dance & music recital/performance • Lectures, seminars & exhibits
