Program Overview

We are recognized by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) as an educational/training program. We have a comprehensive program, which provides hands on training for patient care within their regulated scope of practice. The program prepares professionals for intensive training and exposure to all aspects of the pharmacy technician role. Pharmacy technicians assist in the preparation and dispensing of medications. A combination of lecture, on-campus laboratory and clinical training prepares graduates for a variety of employment opportunities in community and hospital pharmacies. The curriculum is designed to provide the educational information and competencies required by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician, (CPhT). (click the link for more state board information)

Licensing & Certifications How do I become a pharmacy technician in the state of Texas?

Step 1 – Obtain a national pharmacy technician certification First, you must become a certified pharmacy technician through one of the two national certification organizations:

• The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), or • The National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

A pharmacy technician certification from one of these organizations (you do not need to be certified by both) is required before you can apply for a Texas registration. You will need to take the organizations’ respective exam and pass to receive this certification.

Step 2 – Apply for a pharmacy technician registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy Once you are a certified technician under PTCB or NHA, you will be able to apply with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy for a pharmacy technician registration.

The Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) is an independent state health regulatory agency established by the Texas Legislature in 1907 to regulate the practice of pharmacy and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of Texas. TSBP regulates pharmacists, pharmacies, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy technician trainees and the legal distribution of prescription drugs through pharmacies in the state of Texas. In order to fulfill its responsibilities, TSBP licenses pharmacists and pharmacies, registers pharmacy technicians and pharmacy technician trainees, inspects pharmacies, investigates complaints, and disciplines violators of pharmacy laws. PTCB Certification is required by many employers and fulfills many state registration/licensure requirements.

What is the difference between a pharmacy technician and a technician trainee?

• A pharmacy technician is an individual who is registered with the Board as a pharmacy technician and whose responsibility in a pharmacy is to provide technical services that do not require professional judgment regarding preparing and distributing drugs and who works under the direct supervision of and is responsible to a pharmacist.

• A pharmacy technician trainee is an individual who is registered with the board as a pharmacy technician trainee and is authorized to participate in a pharmacy’s technician training program.

*Trainee licenses are valid for ONLY 2 years, and CANNOT be renewed*

What is the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)?

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is responsible for administering the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam. Certification by PTCB alone does not authorize an individual to work in a pharmacy as a pharmacy technician.

**Collin College students test with the PTCB organization. **

Since the Pharmacy Tech student will be in the clinical setting participating in patient care, all students will be drug tested prior to the start of the clinical rotation. Tetanus, Diphtheria & Pertussis (TDaP) - documentation must show a TDaP booster within the last ten (10) years. This is not to be confused with the DTaP shot; they are not the same vaccine. Influenza (Flu) Shot - seasonal flu shots are required if a student will complete clinical shifts any month between October and May. Flu shots are not required for summer clinical courses. A flu declination waiver is not acceptable for our hospital partnerships. The new flu vaccines release at the end of September and are widely available. Health Insurance (FRONT and BACK of CARD) - proof of health insurance is required. If a student's name is NOT on the card, the student will need to contact the insurance company or visit their patient portal to obtain a Verification of Benefits with their name on it. Blue Star Diagnostics will ONLY clear a submission that includes the front AND back of the insurance card. If you do not have insurance, please contact your Clinical Coordinator for options. CPR Certification - you must show certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Saver CPR or AHA BLS. Our clinical partners DO NOT accept Red Cross. Professional License: submit a copy of your current, expired Pharmacy technician trainee license or a copy of your application and finger printing receipt. Please note: All student MUST have the correct documentation submitted by their class deadline date. This date will be given to students by their Professor at the beginning of the course. * * * Due to the complex nature of clinical placement along with the expectation of our clinical partners, students who do not meet the deadline will NOT proceed into the clinical portion of the course. * * * Any student who has not met the requirements by the deadline WILL BE removed from the class. It is the student's responsibility to communicate with their Professor and/or Clinical Coordinator, well in advance of the deadline, if they have any issues, questions or concerns. Due to FERPA, we will only be able to communicate with students enrolled in the course.
