The Kansas Chapter Well Representedand Continually Acknowledged at DU International Convention

A PuBLicAtion of thE KAnsAs chAPtER of DELtA uPsiLon
With the International Fraternity Convention and
Leadership Institute held in our own backyard
this summer, it was easy to get a nice group of KU
alumni to join the undergraduate and alumni Fraterni-
ty brothers from chapters around the U.S. and Canada
at the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City, Missouri, from
August 2 through 6.
About a dozen KU alumni attended a cocktail reception
on Wednesday evening, including three former Internation-
al Board members from the Kansas Chapter, Lewis
Gregory ’75, Doug Ballou ’75, and John Esau ’78.
Reports about area chapters at KU, Kansas State,
Wichita, and Missouri were given from undergraduate
presidents and officials of the DU International Board
and Foundation. Presenting at the 2006 Alumni Vol-
unteer Conference later in the week was Kansas DU
alumnus Rod Barleen ’97, who spoke to a peer vol-
unteer group about Greek housing trends, fundraising,
and chapter operations.
At the convention, our Chapter was repeatedly recog-
nized as one of the exemplary DU chapters. Along the
way, our Chapter received awards for outstanding
facilities management, community service, and special
recognition under the Chapter Excellence Program.
On the night of the grand banquet the Kansas Chapter
received its most significant honor by being selected
as one of the finalists for the Grand Sweepstakes Award.
As the award was presented, I noted with pride that
our Chapter representatives receiving the award
included undergraduate leaders (current and future),
the Chapter counselor, and members of our House
Corporation Board and our Education Foundation.
Putting the Kansas Chapter in the Delta Upsilon “Top
5” had taken a great team effort by a lot of people
working together.
When everyone is rowing the boat in the same direction,
great things can happen. There are many ways to
remain involved as a Kansas Chapter alumnus
whether as a limited engagement or on a continuing
basis. Your Chapter is hungry for alumni involvement
in the form of guest speakers, leadership mentors, and
long-distance career advisors.
If you have minutes, hours, days, or dollars available,
we can use your help in continuing the success of the
Kansas Chapter.
Fraternally,
Bryan R. LaGree ’80

As my term winds down, I could not be
more pleased with the way things at the
Chapter have been operating. From academics
to community involvement and athletics, our
men are proving themselves as leaders and
gentlemen. This summer at the Delta Upsilon
Leadership Institute in Kansas City, the Chapter
was recognized as a Sweepstakes Finalist. The
talk of the conference was the Kansas Chapter’s
return to the top.
Freshman class helps to improve overall G.P.A.The Chapter has continued to improve its
overall G.P.A. We went from a fall 3.099
G.P.A. to this spring’s G.P.A. of 3.12. Once
again, the freshmen showed their academic
strength with three 4.0s in their class alone.
However, we feel confident in saying that our
new recruits will be able to top that number.
Recruitment effort brings 39 new associate members to the ChapterOn August 11 we welcomed 39 new associate
members into the Chapter. Applause is due to
trent nelson ’08, Brian huntington ’08,
and chris Albrect ’08 for their amazing
recruitment effort. The Chapter House is
filled to its seams, and we are enjoying every
minute of it. The new class is made up of
some of the finest scholars, leaders, and
athletes that have ever been a part of this
Chapter. We look forward to our new recruit-
ment chairmen continuing the effort. If there
are any alumni recommendations, please let the
chairmen know. It’s never too early to start
thinking about next year.
Plans under way for Rock Chalk RevueAfter an amazing run last year, DU is looking
to be on top again. We have already paired up
with Delta Gamma for this year’s Homecom-
ing competition. We are looking forward to
winning the prize back to back. Rock Chalk
Revue preparation has already begun. Last
spring we asked Gamma Phi Beta to be our
partners in this year’s production. Finally,
practice for DU flag football started the first
week of school. The Chapter is excited to bring
The Hill Championship home again this year.
Philanthropic efforts include twomore fundraising eventsIn an effort to make the Kansas Chapter stand
above the rest, we have become very involved
with the Boys and Girls Club. We have
increased our effort from solely hosting the
Greg Wilkerson Memorial Football Tourna-
ment to organizing a chili cook-off and basketball
clinic for the kids. We raised more than $4,000
last year and are looking to improve that total
this semester.
I would like to thank all of the alumni and parents
for their continued support. We all have the
same goal in mind, which is to make this
Chapter the best at KU and the best Fraternity.
Please feel free to stop by on a game day or
Mondays for Chapter. We would love to have you.

Paul Lantis ’07

Welcome Fall 2006 New MembersThe Kansas Chapter is pleased to welcome
the following 39 men to Delta Upsilon
Page 4The Sunflower
Roger Morrison ’65 and Richard Morrison
’70, both of Salina, Kansas, share a strong
interest in collecting cars, though each has his
own passion and direction. Roger is into classic
cars and car shows, while Richard has the
“need for speed” in racing vintage autos.
Richard started racing go-carts in his teen
years and still has the first car he bought, a
1925 Model T Ford coupe. Richard currently
owns “about a dozen” cars—an eclectic
group of sport and racing cars that includes a
1964 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso he drove at KU his
senior year, a ’67 Shelby GT350 Mustang
identical to one driven at KU his first three
years, a Formula Atlantic Indy car formerly
owned by Jeff Andretti, and several others. A
real prize is his ’39 Lagonda Le Mans replica
that he enjoys racing.
Roger’s collection of cars includes numerous
hot rods and dragsters, along with his prized
’29 Rolls-Royce Springfield Phantom I Riviera
Town Brougham with a body by Brewster.
Roger has been a judge (Rolls-Royce class) at
the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours D’Ele-
gance, America’s premier classic car event, for
more than 20 years. Richard has had one win-
ner at the Pebble Beach classic, while Roger
has racked up three wins.
Roger was an English major at KU, while
Richard majored in economics. After college,
both brothers returned to Salina to work in the
family grain storage and farming operations
while perusing other entrepreneurial ventures.
The brothers are still active in Morrison Ventures
when they’re not racing, showing, or looking
for more cars to add to their collections.
Richard and his wife, Sallie, have two chil-
dren, Mindy and Jeffrey. Roger and his wife,
Maureen, have four children: Aaron, Amy,
Molly, and Megan. Roger can be contacted at
Top: Richard races his MG Liquid Suspension
Special at the Michigan International Speedway.
Bottom: Roger’s Rolls-Royce Riviera Town Car
sits outside the Lodge at Pebble Beach, Florida.
Alumni Spotlights
Gene camarena ’79, a Salina, Kansas
native, left the DU house after graduation
and took a job at a regional accounting firm in
Wichita. Fast forward a quarter century from
this modest beginning and you’ll find a suc-
cessful entrepreneur who recognized many
opportunities along the way, changed course,
took risks, and worked hard to become one of
Pizza Hut’s most successful franchisees. Oh,
and he owns four Marriott hotel franchises
with three others either under construction or
on the drawing board.
Gene’s early career took him to Koch Indus-
tries in Wichita where he worked on business
acquisitions and solidified an increasing desire
to build or acquire his own business. During
his tenure at Koch, Gene applied to Harvard
Business School and was accepted in the fall
of 1985. He confesses that being middle of the
pack at Harvard, among some elite and pedi-
greed classmates, was fine with him. He cred-
its his experience at Harvard with giving him
the tools he would eventually need to pull off
something big.
For Gene, “something big” started at Pizza
Hut, where he landed a job working on fran-
chise acquisitions and small chain deals after
Harvard. While working for Pizza Hut Corpo-
rate, Gene confesses that crunching numbers
every day made him realize “the franchise side
of the business was where the
money is.” Gene put together his
own deal for eight stores in the
Amarillo, Texas, area and pre-
sented it to then president Steve
Reinimund (currently the CEO
of PepsiCo) who liked the idea.
By 1994, another dozen stores
were acquired.
Today, Gene’s company owns
and operates 71 units in Texas,
New Mexico, and Indiana. He
says, “I chose the company name La Raza
Pizza (the race pizza) to signify that this is a
100% Hispanic owned company, and that we
are very proud of that fact. The majority of our
employees in Texas and New Mexico are His-
panic.” He is also proud to report that based on
2005 sales, his company is ranked in the top
125 Hispanic owned companies in America.
While his business units have offices in Amar-
illo, Indianapolis, and Kansas City, Gene and
his wife, Yolanda (also a Harvard graduate),
call Wichita home. They are active and
involved parents of two daughters, Gena and
Potsie, who both attend Wichita Collegiate
High School. The family is also heavily
involved in the Hispanic community. Yolanda
started a program at Wichita
North High School called
FLLOW, Future Latino Leaders
of Wichita.
Gene stays involved in the com-
munity working with the United
Way, the Catholic Diocese of
Wichita, and as a former chair-
man of the International Pizza
Hut Franchise Holders Associa-
tion. In spite of his dedication to
the community, a busy work
schedule, and frequent travels out of state,
Gene prides himself in rarely missing any of
his girls’ activities, and still finding the time to
hang with some of his DU brothers in the
Wichita area, whom he describes as “some of
my closest friends, which has been a lasting
benefit from my four years at the DU house.”
In addition to Pizza Huts and hotels, Gene has
owned Burger King and Beauty Warehouse
franchises, though he has since sold his inter-
est in those concepts. Is he done building?
“We continue to look at different deals every
year” is his reply.

Naval Jelly. He promoted and sold it first by
mail order, and it later became widely avail-
able through hardware, automotive, and home
improvement centers nationwide. Later in life,
brother Kaufman sold his interest in Naval
Jelly to the Loctite Corporation. His family
described him as a Renaissance man, with var-
ied interests ranging from the arts, to history,
