Student Housing has housed Jayhawks and their T-shirts (represented in this T-shirt sculpture) since 1923 when we built Corbin Hall.

stUdents saY:“Academically, there’s a better chance of succeeding on campus.”

“The environment is beneficial to learning. There’s easier access to the University’s resources.”

“[Housing] keeps you close to classes and focused on the subjects. The community is friendly and fun, giving you something to do when you’re not busy studying.”

GSP’s study lounges feature the regions of Kansas. The galleries also serve as an educational resource to engage students outside the classroom.

gradeS. Just the facts: you’ll get better grades here.

academic sUccess

academics grade-point aVerageOn-campus residents get better grades than students in other living environments. More than 7 percent of on-campus residents earned a 4.0 grade-point average during the last three years. On-campus students also posted an overall grade-point average of 3.02 compared to 2.82 for off-campus students. That’s in part because of trained staff, study groups, and upperclass mentors.

retentionBetter grades mean better retention. On-campus housing residents progress toward graduation at a nearly 10 percent higher rate than off-campus students. Graduating in four years is a KU standard of excellence.

supportWe take the extra step to help you reach goals:

1. Internet is included in your housing rate. Wireless is available throughout the building and wired Internet is also available in individual rooms. You may connect four devices at a speed of 20 megabits per second, or upgrade your speed and number of devices for additional cost. Learn more at myresnet.com.

2. Study areas are in every building and classrooms are featured in GSP and Templin residence halls. KU Writing Center and other academic services are available where you live. KU’s new residence halls opening in August 2015 will feature a commons building with academic resources for all Daisy Hill residents to use.

3. Networked printer stations are provided in each hall.

4. Learning communities allow students to live and learn with others who share the same academic interests. Learn more: firstyear.ku.edu/communities.

5. Resident Assistants will help each resident develop an academic goal plan. They also set up academic “check-ins” throughout the semester to help residents reach their goals.

residential educationSocial responsibility is Student Housing’s educational priority. Students will learn academic success skills, good decision-making about drug and alcohol use, self-advocacy, communication through conflict, living in a diverse community, and involvement and connection to KU.

By living in a residence hall or scholarship hall, Jayhawks will demonstrate personal responsibility for themselves, contribute to their community and connect to the changing global community.

two new residence hallsAll on-campus residence halls are conveniently located — a short walk, bike ride, or bus trip takes you to any campus building. Two new buildings will join the four existing Daisy Hill residence halls to form a distinctive quadrangle. All residents are encouraged to use the new two-story Commons on Daisy Hill. It will unite all six residence halls and its academic features include a digital production room, study spaces and classroom with the latest technology. Social spaces include a fireplace, Ping-Pong and pool tables, living room and kitchen.

you’d be a great fit for a scholarship hall if: •You’re a first-generation college student and diversity, collaboration, and a small community

are important to you.•You take your college success seriously and welcome “student success” meetings to plan

your academic program with graduate student mentors.•You see yourself as a future KU campus leader.•You’re looking for creative ways to fund your college living expenses.

The “scholarship” is a lower housing rate because everyone helps with four to six hours of weekly duties, such as cooking or cleaning for the 50-person community. It’s such a close-knit community that most students live here for four years.

Student Housing helps

you Get connected

Resident Assistants answer questions, help residents develop an academic goal plan, and share other leadership skills. Student Housing and Dining Services offer hundreds of students the chance to “work where they live.” The jobs pay more than minimum wage and have flexible schedules.

Page 21: KU Student Housing: Living at KU 2014-15

advantages

on-campus housing provides:• one convenient bill. The charge appears on your

KU e-bill each semester.• affordability. KU residence hall rates are nearly $2,000

less per year than the national average for public schools, according to the College Board.

• Convenient contracts. If you graduate mid-year or Study Abroad, for instance, we’ll adjust your contract. Many halls remain open during university breaks.

• events and activities. We’ll help you get connected and engaged in the life of the university.

• options. The options (traditional rooms, suites, scholarship halls, apartments) allow you to increase your independence during your four-year college career without losing conveniences, including dining plans, and community.

• upperclass and graduate communities. • Location, location, location. On-campus housing

features a variety of study spaces and the technology you need for individual and group work. Many are next to dining services.

• smaller carbon footprint. Living cooperatively is ecologically sustainable. You don’t need a car — you can bike, walk or take a bus to class.

• a green environment. Student Housing and KU Dining reuse, reduce and recycle. We buy energy-saving appliances and equipment, energy-efficient windows, furniture made from post-consumer materials, and sustainable wood products.

off-campus means:•Separate bills for gas, electricity, water,

cable and Internet.•Security deposits for rent and utilities.•Grocery shopping, preparing food,

washing dishes and cleaning up.•Needing a car and parking pass to get

to class, libraries or tutoring.•According to one national financial

author, the average college student spends $5,000 more each year to live off campus.

WHy KU?on-campus living offers huge advantages!

Study Abroad? We’ll adjust your contract.
