EFI senior applications specialist, Brian Bernard, offers some tips and tricks on roll-to-roll, double sided printing on VUTEk ® hybrid printers. While this application is not entirely supported, it is doable provided it is done carefully and close attention is paid to setup and placement of the image. Perfect back to front registra- tion should never be expected, however, as that can only be achieved using the media fence in sheet mode. The following tips are for a banner application as opposed to a backlit application. Step 1: Load the Media Load the roll as straight as possible, advance the media and load to the front take up winder. Adjust the tension of the winders so the media moves smoothly and uniformly through the machine. Mark a spot on the printer and the media. A tick mark on the edge of the media and a piece of tape on the printer work well. Make tick marks on both edges, because when you flip the roll, the right edge will become your left edge. Using tape, also mark where you loaded the media on the air core. Step 2: Print the Front/Side One Step 3: Load the Media for Side Two Move the roll to the intake side of the printer and flip the roll so the right edge is now on the left and vice versa. Make sure the side edge of the roll is loaded to align with the tape mark you made on the air core. Advance the media to the front take up winder. Take care to load the roll as straight as possible. Make sure that the tick mark you made on the media lines up to the mark you made on the printer. Step 4: Aligning the Images Your right edge on the front side is now your left margin. Measure from your side two left edge to the point where your image starts. This number will be your left margin. This method works best when perfect registration is not necessary, and a little bit of bleed is built into the file. An alternative method is to sheet the media and use the media registration fence as if you were running a rigid sheet. However, this method is not always preferable as heavier, rolled media tends to have memory or curve when cut off into sheets, and it adds a pre-print step to the process.
