DOCUMENTARY STYLE We have chosen to create a docusoap in the style of

direct cinema and talking heads. The portion of direct cinema will focus on the children's actions within the school and the talking heads will include their answers to being interviewed regarding what's happened so far in their experience.

The genre will be a reality docusoap so it will be quite serious however we hope to put a comic spin upon the situations that will occur so that our audience can identify with the pupils and laugh at their obnoxious behaviour

OUTLINE OF THE DOCUMENTARY:

Our product will feature the first episode of the docusoap that will most likely be part 1of the 7 part series. In the first 5 minutes we aim to include their first day. This will be their arrival at the school and a scene in which they have to partake in P.E.

We will then show an ‘after the break’ clip where the students will be facing lunchtime in the canteen and then the middle of the episode will feature their first encounters with the students.

The ending of the first episode will then focus on the teachers and how they react to the new kids along with either an argument or a controversial statement to drive the series on to the next episode.

FILMING LOCATIONS We aim to film the entire thing at our school (Chauncy) and a scene

outside in the car park. The main locations we will be focusing on are:• In the canteen• In the darkroom• In the gym• In the common room• In the corridors of the school

CHARACTERS When filming our documentary, we aim to use the following

characters: • Jill• 2 P.E teachers• The dinner ladies• The 4 ‘privileged’ kids, the main characters

KEY SCENES Some potential scenes we aim to include consist of: o Footage of a Chauncy bus driving into the school, the kids offload and look up. It then

switches to an interview/hand held video diary of the kids giving their first impressions about the appearance of the school.

o Comparison shots between public and private common rooms: the new common room as the private school and the dark room as the public school common room.

o First lesson is P.E, private school kids refuse to partake. A student says something like ‘we only play tennis. Indoors.’ Causing the teachers to roll their eyes. Cuts to an interview with the teachers mocking and complaining about them. Before the P.E lesson, a shot of Jill walking with the students telling them their first lesson is P.E. they then say something like ‘we only do callisthenics’ and Jill nods awkwardly. The kids sneak out of P.E, which then cuts to CCTV footage of Jill running through the corridors trying to find them.

o After the break footage of the children going to lunch, waiting at the tables for their meal, voice of god possibly saying that they’ll soon get a shock or something along those lines.

DOCUMENTARY RESEARCHEDUCATING YORKSHIREProduced by: TwoFourAppeared on: Channel 4Appeared: September 2015Target audience: most likely aimed towards older teens and young adults. The excessive amount of swearing suggests that the show isn’t aimed towards younger children. Older teens may be attracted to the show as they can compare it to their own school and laugh at the actions of the other teens. Storyline: A warm and humorous exploration of life in a secondary schoolProduction techniques: - A heavy amount of mediation. The show is presumably filmed over a 6

month period and the producers chose the most exciting parts and fit them into an 8 episode long series. This attracts a wider audience as they tune in to see the funny and dramatic parts opposed to if they would’ve included the mundane parts of the show.

- The main appearances within the show are often the children who misbehave or have learning difficulties. This is another form of mediation as the producers choose to include the most interesting parts to attract a wider audience.

Similarities: We will use the idea of the talking heads to allow the audience to familiarise with the characters of the story much like in Educating Yorkshire where we learn a lot about characters like Bailey and Musharaf

EDUCATING JOEY ESSEXProduced by: Lime PicturesAppeared on: ITVAppeared: March 2014Target Audience: most likely aimed towards teens/adults. Joey Essex is famous for being unintelligent so the adults would watch to mock him. Also existing fans of Joey EssexStoryline: a travel show in which a naïve reality TV star travels the world in a bid to fill some gaps in his knowledgeProduction techniques: - Joey is depicted as a very unintelligent and childlike person which is

portrayed well towards the beginning of the episode when he is bitten by a monkey and despite no ounce of blood leaving his body, goes to the hospital as he is convinced he has rabies.

- Throughout the episode Joey is seen to ask mass amounts of questions when in South Africa. These questions not only depict Joey as this unintelligent person but also allow the audience to gain some knowledge on the countries as the tour guides and people that joey encounters often answer his questions and tell him facts about their home towns.

Similar things in our documentary: - While the actual concept of our documentary is completely different,

we will be using the idea of combining talking heads and direct cinema. We will also be sticking with the idea of including the main characters first impressions of the place along with the opposing impressions of the people who are meeting the main characters.
