The February 20 th Career Café was hosted by four of the Pontotoc Ridge Career and Technology Center programs – Ag Power & Machinery, Health Science II, Teacher

Academy, and Career Pathway Experience (CPE).

Ag Power & Machinery was represented by program instructor, Matt Powell. Ag Power is an instructional program designed to provide basic skills for students to become employed in the industry of agricultural power mechanics or to continue their education in postsecondary institutions. Skills taught in this pathway relate to the selection, operation, service, maintenance, and repair of a variety of agricultural power units and agricultural machinery and equipment.

Sonya Holcomb, instructor of Health Science II, shared information about her program. Health Science II includes classroom and hands-on experiences that will provide students with an overview of the health-care field, as outlined according to the Health Science Cluster in the National Career Clusters Framework and the National Consortium on Health Science Education (NCHSE), as well as begin to prepare students for healthcare careers predicted to have a high number of available jobs in the next 10 years.

Teacher Academy instructor, Dionne Gunter, informed students about her program. Teacher Academy is designed to attract students to the field of education, provide information and field experiences relevant to pursuing a degree in education, and prepare students for the rigors of a career in education so they will remain long-term educators. The Teacher Academy pathway includes classroom and hands-on experiences that will prepare students for employment or continuing education in the education field.

The Career Pathway Experience program was represented by Rumae Stroup. CPE provides the students the opportunity to take knowledge and skills and apply them in the workplace. The CPE course will foster self-directed learning; strengthen the development of core academic skills through application in authentic situations; allow students to explore career options; enhance communication skills, leadership, and problem solving; and contribute to community economic development.

Thank you to these instructors for sharing career information with our students. The February 27 th Career Café will be hosted by the Drafting, Welding, and Construction: Carpentry programs at Pontotoc Ridge Career and Technology Center.

Music Notes  Fourth grade music classes recently studied Copland’s “Variation on Simple Gifts-Shaker Dance.” The class read about the life of a Shaker and learned about their simple lifestyle. They learned the melody of “Simple Gifts” and then were taught and performed a simple ostinato on the xylophone. Next, they studied about a musical variation. Students were instructed to perform various activities to show recognition of a variation- from raising a bird on a stick to playing a type of musical chairs. The final activity was to pantomime activities of the Shaker people- from different types of chores to building a barn.

Black History Month First graders are learning about many African American inventors, artists, political figures, athletes, and civil rights activists during Black History Month. Many classes have tied social studies and writing, as well as the arts, into this

unit of study. The unit will end with a trip to the Heritage museum in New Albany at the end of February.

Arctic Animals

During our Arctic Animals unit, Mrs. Heatherly’s class researched the polar bear. We watched a video about polar

bears to help with our research. We then made charts that described what polar bears can do, what they are, and things that they have. Each student then chose one sentence from each poster that describes the polar bear. After we finished our research, we then used oil pastel crayons and watercolors to create a picture of a polar bear to conclude our Arctic

Animal unit.
