Spotlight on our PMS Staff  Mrs. Barefoot, assistant principal at Pontotoc MIddle School, loves to travel, read and write, plan hiking trips and being outdoors. She grew up in Greenwood, MS, and has degrees from Delta State and Ole Miss. She and her husband, Chris, have three kids who attend Pontotoc schools. They make farm tables on the side, as Mrs. Barefoot sands and stains the tables to sell. Her best vacation was a 31 day cross country trip in a van with her family. She has several pets, but her favorite pets are chickens especially Debi, who runs to her car when she gets home for Mrs. Barefoot to pick her up. The best part of being the assistant principal at PMS is being in the classrooms watching the kids and teachers.

Warrior 5K Race The 3rd annual Warrior 5K will be on Thursday, September 26th at 7:00 p.m. after the homecoming parade at the Pontotoc Court Square. Something new this year will be a 1 mile walk/run. Order forms were sent home with students. All proceeds from the race will help fund technology and physical education updates for PMS. You can print a registration form at the end of the newsletter or register online. Registration is 25.00; PCSD students receive a $10 discount with TRUEWARRIOR code.

We are needing volunteers to sign up to help with

Positive Displays Around School  Pontotoc MIddle School is promoting positive behavior by displaying bulletin boards in the hallways, media center and the counselor’s office. This is one strategy used to instill character education into the lives of our students. Not only do the students hear encouraging words from the faculty and staff, but these visual aids provide another reinforcement.

NASA TIMELINES  After reading about historic NASA missions, Mrs. Johnson's 5th grade reading class created timelines. Students put the missions they read about in chronological order.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS CREATIONS  As a culminating activity for studying

photosynthesis, students in Mrs.

Richardson's classroom were challenged to

create a model of the photosynthesis

process using PlayDoh. Models displayed a

variety of creative ways to display the

necessary elements needed for

photosynthesis to occur, as well as the

products created when the process is

completed. Humans play a vital role in this

process. Without our carbon dioxide,

plants would not be able to make its own

food.

GREENHOUSE TOUR  Mrs. Richardson's class explored outdoors to see first hand a variety of plants and to discuss how different they are. All energy comes from the sun, but not all plants need the same amounts. Some prefer shade, while others love direct sunlight.

Student Council Voting Begins! Fourth graders at DTC began the voting process for Student Council in computer lab last week. Good Luck to all the candidates!

To complete their study of landforms, Ms. Luther’s class brought out their artistic sides by creating landforms using chalk and oil pastels. The students really enjoyed this activity!

In Library this week, students dove into the writing process by studying Personal Narratives. Mrs. Dowdy walked the students through what they should include in a good writing piece including hooks, sequence, dialogue and descriptions. The students were asked to write their own “Ouch” story. She read an example titled “Sliced by a Seashell.” Students then spent two weeks brainstorming, writing their rough drafts and their final pieces. Once finished, the students practiced speaking and listening skills by presenting their narratives to the class.

Round of Applause!

This week’s Round of Applause is given to the PES Cafeteria Staff! They are wonderful to

everyone and the food they cook is delicious! Thank you for making a positive impact on

our school!

 The Importance of Our Flag

Students in Mrs. McCreight’s first grade class discussed what happened on September 11th. They looked at before and after pictures of the Twin Towers, and the Pentagon. They talked about ways to make sure this would never happen again and how it brought our country together. The students talked about what the flag means and how that can’t be taken away.

Prefix Surgery Mrs. McRaney’s class had a prefix/suffix “surgery” earlier in the week. The students loved it! They had to cut the word apart - separating the prefix/suffix from the root word. Then, they used bandaids to put the words back together. Many Thanks to friends, family, and even strangers for donating the medical supplies to our class. The surgery was a success!

About to Fly

Pre K Students are in the “making marks” (scribbling) stage of artistic development. They need lots of

practice as they are developing their fine motor skills. In art class they practiced holding and controlling

chalk pastels while coloring butterfly pictures. The butterflies were pre-cut and students held them in place

as they colored. Later, the butterflies were re-positioned so they looked like they were flying away.
