pril brings the primrose sweet,Scatters daisies at our feet.

April really does usher in spring and foretell the summer. A month of sun and showers, it is often a great month for getting growing in the garden while in the field, the grass now has a real food value for young livestock such as lambs, kids and calves. Birds are nesting and if not already here, then swallows and other migrant birds are finding their way to our countryside. Hedges should not be trimmed now in case it disturbs nesting birds. It is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act with a hefty fine to disturb nesting birds. The clocks have gone forward and the days continue to lengthen. There’s plenty to look at in the fields with the yellow of the oil seed rape making an appearance – for many this makes them sneeze and it is said that eating local honey at this time might help. It certainly won’t do any harm as honey is such a wonderful food. But it has to be from local bees so they have collected local pollen. The green spears of wheat and barley are now surging ahead and by May, some barley may have formed ears. In Fenland, potatoes are being sown with the distinctive potato ridges in the fields making a spectacular landscape. Towards Wisbech there is still some lovely apple blossom on show, reflecting that there are still fruit growers in our area and remembering how famous this area was for apple orchards. In and around March there are several public rights of way out into the countryside where, if they are public footpaths, you can walk, if bridleways you can ride a horse as well and if byways you can take a vehicle although please don’t do that if it is going to cause damage to the path. There is a circular walk called Woodman’s Way that really shows off the Fen countryside and there is a pdf for down load on the internet http://www.visitcambridge.org/dbimgs/WoodsmanWayLeaflet.pdf – or you can ask for a free copy from the One Stop Shop. For other rights of way, most of them are signposted with a green sign stating their classification or March Town Council and Wimblington Parish Council will have a list of them. Or you can contact the rights of way team at Cambridge Council for more details. Check out www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/environment/countrysideandrights/public/ for full details.

On the 3rd April come the cuckoo and the nightingale - so says the old proverb! In April the cuckoo shews its billIn May he sings both night and dayIn June he altereth his tuneIn July he prepares to flyIn August fly he must - old rhyme captured by Simon and Garfunkel in their song ‘April, come she will’

The bookcase on Dutch Auction at Ambiance has been sold. The item started at a retail price of £170, and each shop-day the price reduced by £5. It was finally sold for £85 and this was the amount guessed by lucky customer Jo Stromberg who won a £20 Ambiance gift voucher in the competition run to guess the final selling price.

LIFE CHANGING SOLUTIONS………….. amongst other things, affecting your health and wellbeing. We need the good stress to help us function properly but the bad stress can make us very ill. Signs of being badly affected by stress include feeling overwhelmed, demands being made are greater than the ability to cope, stressors (both internal and external), changes to physical wellbeing and health. 25% of workers take time off sick due to stress-related illness.

Identifying that you are suffering from stress is the first step to managing the symptoms, which include headaches, palpitations, diarrhoea, constipation, loss of appetite, eating more, chest pains, sleep disturbances, high blood pressure, IBS, depression, recurrent infections, heart disease, strokes, cancer and angina. There are many more symptoms, too many to list here. Stress can also affect the vital organs of the body, causing serious illnesses.

Getting your stress levels under control is vital

and there are a number of ways that this can be achieved. Stress management can be one to one, over the phone or via Skype, or stress management presentations are available for companies and groups of up to twenty people and last half a day. Just talking with someone can help. Don’t hesitate, sort your stress levels out now and live a healthier, happier life.

LIFE CHANGING SOLUTIONS !LIFE COACHING – THE OPPORTUNITIES ARE ENDLESS

Life coaching is about you, your hopes, dreams and goals, helping you to take the small, necessary steps to reach those goals and helping you to build confidence in your abilities, overcome worries and to change whatever it is you want to change.

Do you feel that you are unsuited to your job? Do you feel that there should be more to life? Do you feel dissatisfied inside? Are you a square peg trying to fit into a round hole?

It is possible to make changes. Perhaps you would like to change your career and go in a new direction, maybe start up your own business, to start leading a team instead of being a member, build up your confidence, overcome shyness or getting through a rough patch to see the possibilities on the other side. The opportunities are endless. You don’t have to have a clear idea of what you want to begin with because, through discussion, a pathway will become clear.

Life coaching can be in person (in March), via Skype or over the phone so you can benefit from life coaching wherever you are.

If you would like to book an appointment, please go to our website: www.revitalizedyou.co.uk

By Eileen Le Voi www.safelocaltrades.comIt’s a SCAM - fraudsters want your pin and bank cardDear readers, Over the last few months, there has been a significant rise in a scam called ‘Courier Fraud’ which has seen victims being defrauded of thousands of pounds. The courier fraud is a sophisticated scam where people are telephoned by fraudsters and duped into revealing their PIN and handing over their bank card to a courier. To carry this out, a fraudster rings you claiming to be a police officer or someone from your bank. You are then informed that your bank card has been cloned or used fraudulently. You may be asked to ring back dialing either 999 or using the phone number on the back of your card - which further convinces you the call is genuine. However, the criminal keeps the line open at their end so, when you make the call, you are unknowingly connected straight back to the fraudster. Then, by seeming to offer assistance, the fraudster tries to gain your trust. In most cases you are asked to ‘cancel’ your existing card or ‘activate’ or ‘authorise’ a replacement card by either reading out your PIN or by keying it into your phone’s handset. In some cases, victims have been asked to withdraw thousands so that the investigation can be progressed. The fraudster then tells you that a courier will pick up your card or cash from your home. In some cases a genuine courier company is hired to pick up the card, which the victim has been asked to place into an envelope. The Police were contacted recently by a local victim who reported that she was waiting at home with £5,000 for a courier to collect, and on 25th February an elderly gentleman fell victim to the scam and handed over £2000.Remember this advice: • Your bank or the police will NEVER ring you and tell you that they are coming to your home to pick up your card, so never hand it over to anyone who comes to collect it. • Your bank will NEVER ask you to authorise anything by revealing your PIN.• NEVER share your PIN with anyone – the only times you should use your PIN is at a cash machine or when you use a shop’s chip and PIN machine. Please pass this message to friends and family, particularly the elderly who are most vulnerable. If you should receive a call of this nature please report it to the Police by calling 101.

Spring has finally arrived after a long, wet winter. Once the daffodils have faded do not cut them back for six weeks as cutting them back as soon as they have flowered will impair next year’s flowers. If the weather is fine, warm and the frosts have passed, now is the time to plant out summer bedding plants, there is a great selection available, all at great prices with multi-buys and all locally grown. In dry spells you will need to water your plants and a water butt is a great way of providing healthy water which plants like and saves you running up a big water bill. Most water butts are supplied as kits which includes the stand, tap, base and a kit to divert the water from the downpipe and into the butt. Weeds are now emerging. If you don’t want to use any chemicals the simplest and most effective method is to handpick or hoe off the weeds. Both methods will require regular work and it can be back breaking but very effective. Chemical controls like Roundup, Weedol and Pathclear are effective but require some thought before applying. Pathclear & Ground Clear have a residual weedkiller which in the case of Ground Clear, can stay in the soil, preventing

weeds for up to 6 months, which means they should not be used on areas which are to be cultivated or are already planted. Roundup and Weedol take effect very quickly, only hours in the right conditions and will break down upon contact with the soil which makes them perfect for using amongst plants which you want to keep in beds, borders or vegetable patches. Skylark can help you decide what’s right for you. Keep feeding the birds who now have their young to feed. Good hygiene is vital so clean out feeders regularly to ensure infectious diseases are not spread. Try to avoid using peanuts, fat and bread at this time, since these can be harmful if adult birds feed them to their nestlings. Only put out peanuts in suitable mesh feeders that will not allow sizeable pieces of peanuts to be removed. Skylark stock a popular and safe bird mix, good value at £9.99 for twenty kilos

The Ship is easily identifiable being a thatched building beside the river and with the nautical name of The Ship. Luckily it is as attractive inside as out and has a real feeling of history with its low ceilings and outlook over the colourful barges and March town. It's a drinkers pub in the best possible sense, a pub for people who are interested in and care about what they drink. Already it has gained one of the most prestigious awards, the CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale - www.camra.org.uk) Gold Award which is a great honour and hard earned. For the last two years it has been in first three of the 'Pub of the Year' Awards. So what makes it so good?

Bring on the ales....At any one time there are always five real ales and six ciders on tap. Woodfordes Wherry is normally one of these but they change with Guest beers on offer. There is also a choice of bottle conditioned beer. The Ciders that were on when I visited included Old Rosie, Wild Wood,, Cheddar Vale and Rosies Pig. And they know how to look after these beers and ciders for a really good tasting drink. These are not your average beers and ciders but carefully crafted and then kept well and served in optimum condition for real taste experience. April sees the start of some very modern

A safe harbour for thethirstyThe Ship sails on to successLiz Wright makes a visit

finger food to go with these lovely ales in the form of an English tapas menu which will be available on Friday evenings.

Beer FestivalThe Ship celebrates its fourth anniversary on the 4th April with the current landlords by holding a beer festival weekend with 15 carefully selected real ales, 7 ciders and 10 bottled craft beers. You'd have to go miles to find some of them and here they are in March for your delight. Appropriate music will accompany the festival on Friday and Sunday evening.

Breakfast aboard the ShipOn Wednesdays to Sundays the Ship serves a locally

sourced breakfast, most of it being supplied from within walking distance of the pub itself. Competitively priced, £4.25 buys you a three sausage breakfast while if you are up to eating a large breakfast, £6.25 is a four sausage and two egg breakfast with all the other usual breakfast items. What can be nicer than overlooking the river in pub full of atmosphere eating locally sourced food? It's a real experience. So now my voyage on the Ship is at an end but I shall be back especially for the beer festival. It's nice to step into a proper olde worlde pub that is for real but with all the modern amenities and a very modern twist of food with the tapas. It's a Ship that is firmly sailing in established waters but with a weather eye to the future. Ahoy there – I'm glad I have found you. Li

Sizzling Sausages spellsuccess March Quality Meats seek outnew flavours

A dazzling array of sausages greets the customer as they enter March Quality Meats in the middle of March more or less opposite the Market Place. Dave Lyons owner of MQM has become something of a sausage expert. “It all started, “ he explained, “when a staff member went to London and noticed some Marmite sausages. She thought they were delicious and so I thought why don't we offer them?” The Marmite sausages proved extremely popular and the enthusiasm for all things sausage was born. Now the range has extended to include pork and leek, pork bacon and beans, all of which I personally tasted. But there are many others including the ever popular Lincolnshire sausage and Black Pudding and Marmalade. I also spotted Italian herbs, Mexican chilli, cracked black pepper, aromatic Thai and piri piri. There are the slightly more conventional Cambs Gold and Lincs Jumbo,. Others are in the pipeline. How do they choose the ingredients? “Staff and customers usually suggest ideas for new sausages and then we try them and if we like them then they reach our customers”. All the sausages are made specially for MQM within Fenland. Toby one of MQM's butchers admitted that he “loved trying new ones” while a passing customer pronounced them “delicious – and its wonderful you can get such a range in March”. *MQM hold a five star food hygiene rating.

The versatile sausageSausages also make a tasty casserole.200g bacon400g pork sausagesIf liked, up to 300g chopped apples200g tomatoes (tinned if preferred)1 green pepper or celery or onion or a mixturestock to coversalt and pepper to season

1. Brown bacon and sausages together in frying pan.2. Then arrange apples, tomatoes and peppers, celery and/or onion (remember to discard seeds from the pepper) on top of sausages and bacon. 3. Add stock to about halfway up the sausages and cook at around 180C for about 40 minutes. 4. Check that there is sufficient stock – you don't want the mixture to burn but the vegetables should also provide some liquid depending on what you choose.

As with most recipes you can vary to taste and to the season. Mushrooms could be used and for a more substantial winter casserole, cubed potatoes, chopped carrots and parsnips. If you want a thicker stock, use a teaspoon of cornflower. You could also top with cheese or add pastry to make a pie.

Moving /Buying a Home?Conveyancing involves legally transferring home ownership from the seller to the buyer. It starts when you make or accept an offer on a house and ends when you either receive or hand over the keys. The Law Society has introduced a Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS) and it is in everyone’s best interest to find a reputable solicitor who has no conflict of interest with any other party and is also a member of this Scheme.

Check the fee quoted to you for your conveyancing. It should include:• Cost of dealing with your mortgage provider. • Cost of obtaining all searches required.• Cost of registering the property at the Land Registry at the end of the

transaction. • Cost of any referral fees being paid (if any).

We would always recommend that you use a solicitor who is local to your area, as it will ensure that you can access the solicitor easily and iron out any problems that may arise quickly.

It is in the best interests of the solicitor to make the whole process run as smoothly as possible for the client. This should include all dealings with

estate agents and solicitors acting for the other side.

At Dack Pearson, we pride ourselves on being able to process a sale or purchase of your home as swiftly and stress-free as possible. Please feel free to call us at any time for a no obligation quote.

Charity needs Fenland VolunteersCare Network Cambridgeshire is a local charity which provides the Help at Home service. Help at Home offers short term emotional and practical help, to people who are recovering after a hospital stay, unwell at home, or who need some practical assistance to help them remain independent at home.

Hilary Johnys, Manager said ‘Our volunteers visit people in their homes and provide practical help with tasks like checking someone is ok, shopping and collecting prescriptions. Visits can be one-off or several over 3 weeks, so volunteers are not overcommitted but will know they have been of help to someone in need. Visits can be undertaken in the spare time volunteers have available during the day, evenings or weekends, they just tell Help at Home when they are free. Volunteers are police checked, trained and paid expenses.

Gill has been a volunteer for over 16 years. She said, ‘Yes I have been doing it for a long time, and have so enjoyed it. Mainly one’s clients are older people, often rather apprehensive, especially if they have been in hospital for a few weeks. To be able to visit them, perhaps do shopping, collect prescriptions, but mostly just talk to them and impart confidence in their own ability, is very rewarding.’

The service is very busy and needs volunteers in Fenland please contact us if you can spare some time to help others in the community. If you would like to find out about volunteering for Help at Home please contact us on 01354 694413.

Following on from my recent visit to the March Marlins Swimming Club I met in Parliament with David Sparkes, Chief Executive of British Swimming. This is part of my campaign to address the unfair funding allocations for our local sports clubs. David has kindly agreed to visit Fenland for a meeting with representatives of the March Marlins Swimming club, Fenland District Council and relevant health funding bodies to look at how we can better access funding in support of swimming – such as where there is a health benefit for disabled people or those with specific health conditions not currently participating. Transport remains a key priority for economic growth and prosperity across the district. In Parliament I have arranged a ‘summit’ this month with the Transport Minister, LEP, Network Rail, County Council and rail industry experts to ensure our bid for funding to improve rail services leaves no stone unturned.

I am pleased to see that proposals to demolish the Ogden’s indoor market site on Acre Road have been put to Fenland Council. With my campaign to combat derelict buildings in our area making progress it is good to see that the building’s owner has recognised the need to address eyesore property. Following the devastating scenes of flooded homes in the Somerset Levels and elsewhere, I have invited organisations including the Environment Agency, the Middle Level Commission and the

NFU to attend a Flooding Round Table meeting to review water management in the Fens. The meeting will bring together representatives from these key agencies with the local district authority and other decision makers and is scheduled to take place on 21st March at South Fens Business Centre. Despite the problems elsewhere, the Fens have coped well in recent months with the high levels of rain and risk of flooding. Thanks go to all those working locally to manage the risk of flooding in our area. I recently wrote to the Chancellor calling for VAT relief to be granted to volunteer rescue services like Cambridgeshire Search and Rescue (CAMSAR). All the money needed to run the team is donated by the public. It is staffed entirely by volunteers who often give up their own holidays to help. Yet at present of the £40,000 running cost a significant proportion goes to the government as they need to pay VAT. I am therefore asking the Chancellor to waive VAT on purchases by these groups. If any residents would like to make a donation to CAMSAR please visit their website at www.camsar.org

I am pleased to be supporting the “Bully Banks” campaign group and recently met with local businessman Peter Grice in Parliament to support the campaign to help those affected by bank mis-selling. The Bully Banks campaign group has over 1,700 small businesses throughout the UK, and their complaint is currently under investigation by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Amazingly rabbits still have most of their natu-ral instincts, making it really important that we understand and consider their natural habitat and behaviour so we can make sure that they’re as happy as they would be in the wild. It’s a common misconception that rabbits are very easy to look after and all they need to do is to be popped into a hutch, then feed and cleaned when needed. Nowadays, we have a far greater understanding of rabbits and there are a few things we need to recognise in order to keep them happy and rabbits expressing aggressive behav-iour toward you and/or other pets, often indicates they are in distress and suffering emotionally. How to Keep Your Rabbit StimulatedIn the wild, rabbits have plenty to keep them oc-cupied, from foraging to reproduction to territorial defense. Captive rabbits, on the other hand, often lack stimulation, which can lead to behavioural problems and poor health. Much like humans, they need to be kept physically and mentally active. You can replicate a rabbit’s natural environment by providing some of the below:- Tunnels- Twigs (which can be hung in their runs) & other suitable toys- Planter filled with potting compost for digging- Large tubes and platforms for climbing- Places to hide such as cardboard boxes- Games, such as food items in brown paper, which they have to unwrap Digging is an innate and favourite pastime of rabbits, both domestic and wild. By providing digging substitutes, such as a sand or earth pit, your pet rabbits will be able to dig away without

damaging your garden or escaping. Being active also reduces the risk of rabbits becoming overweight and even obese, as well as providing the physical and mental stimulation they need. Keeping within Your Rabbits Comfort ZoneJust like humans, rabbits become bored if their en-vironments remain the same, so consider an occa-sional change of scenery. However, be careful as too much change can have adverse effects. A wild rabbit’s survival depends on an intimate knowl-edge of its surroundings in order to escape from predators, so structural changes to a pet rabbit’s “warren” should be kept subtle, such as changing their toys and regularly providing new ones. It’s incredibly beneficial for rabbits to start inter-acting with people, other rabbits and also other pets such as cats and dogs from an early age so they become part of everyday life and not stressful encounters. Familiarity with other species will help them develop into friendly and confident adults. Exposing them to normal everyday sights and sounds is also important, so they remain relaxed and happy in their environments as they mature.Happy Hoppers ClubPlease ask a member of staff about Supreme Pet Foods Happy Hoppers Club, we’d be happy to sign you up for free. Your rabbit/s will then receive a welcome gift, and you’ll get money off vouch-ers through their life, a regular e-newsletter with competitions, tips and much more. As always we hope readers find this article help-ful and interesting and should you have any ques-tions or concerns about your pet please contact your Vets for assistance.

A monthly feature that focuses on current financial issues. Many local Banks and Building Societies have lost their ‘in house’ adviser and few are independent. Eamonn is a fully qualified local Independent Financial Adviser.

Selecting the right Care Package Caring for an elderly or frail individual can be challenging. As the responsible person you want what is best for the individual – but accessing that help, having it delivered in the right way, in the right place and within budget can be a tricky affair. A good starting point would be to obtain Power of Attorney so that you can act for the individual for either or both areas of concern – their wellbeing and their financial affairs. It is important that any such arrangements are put on a proper legal footing, firstly in case things go wrong but just as importantly, data protection legislation can easily get in the way of well intentioned help. For example – it would be quite wrong of a bank or building society to discuss an individual’s financial affairs with anyone that was not legally entitled to ask for it, and the medical profession could not discuss medication, treatment or a prognosis with someone who has no right to the information. In my work as a later life adviser, much of the problem is not finding the services required, it is the paying for them. Some clients are ‘Asset Rich – Cash Poor’. This simply means that their income is not enough to afford the higher level of expenditure associated with long term care. However, sometimes they have a property that could yield funds – they just need a key with which to unlock it! Some solutions might involve Equity Release, sometimes a Care Home annuity might form part of a package. On other occasions my advice on claiming benefits, accessing specialist services and investment options is required. As a member of the Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA) I am fully qualified to advise in all these areas – the initial meeting is at my expense, if further work is required the associated costs will be fully explained before work commences.

Preserving your estate from Long Term Care costs

The idea being, the home owner puts their home in trust, so that it is not included in a financial assessment by the local authority. To enter into such an arrangement, without qualified advice, could be very expensive. The local authorities can ‘undo’ such arrangements if they believe it to be set up as a Deprivation of Assets. In other words, if the local authority believes the action was taken purely to ensure that care costs are borne by the local authority, they can quash the arrangement, so the fee paid is a waste of money.

To be clear, there are circumstances where such an arrangement is both appropriate and helpful, but you should only deal with advisers that are qualified to provide advice such as an Independent Financial Adviser. It is also a good

idea to speak with an Independent Financial Adviser that is a member of the Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA), who have specific qualifications in supporting individuals in later life.

Another aspect to bear in mind is that, if the local authority does end up paying for care, they also choose where the care is to be delivered. On the other hand, a Self-Funder can choose their preferred location (there is an old maxim; He who pays the piper, calls the tune).

If you or someone who know is affected by this, get some professional advice, as a decision now could make a considerable difference in the quality of care that is actually delivered.

There are a number of schemes designed to protect the value of your assets, when Long Term Care needs arise. One such scheme is called a Family Trust;

this could cost well over £2,000 to set up.

"We would like to warn residents of a scam in which a fraudster pretends to be a police officer. Home-Start East Cambs & South Fenland: Support in your home when you need it

If life sometimes feels disjointed, you have no support network, bereavement, no-one to turn to, emotional strain of a new born, relationship breakdown; feeling isolated or just need an impartial and non-judgemental person to talk to? This list is not exhaustive of the issues we support with.

We have volunteers throughout the county who are willing and able to come to your home for up to 3 hours per week for a period of, up to, 6 months, to support you to build better lives for you and your family.

Home-Start has grown from one scheme in 1973 to hundreds of local Home-Starts now. Home-Start helps hundreds of families nationwide each year. All our volunteers, who have parenting experience, help families with all sorts of problems from the commonplace to the overwhelming.

Each volunteer is matched to the family for personalities and needs identified, from simply being listened to, to other circumstances such as accessing the local community, keeping appointments or implementing boundaries and routine with your children.

To be able to access Home-Start support you need to have at least one child under the age of 5 years and be living in the East Cambs & South Fenland area. (This includes March). Home-Start is optional, so once you feel all your needs have been met, you can terminate the support. Support last for 26 visits or 6 months, whichever comes sooner, however if other support needs are identified this timeframe may be extended.

Home-Start also delivers a course to parents who have children with, or are in the investigation process of having a child with, additional needs; this is a 6 week group session workshop that offers emotional support, peer support, support for dealing with professionals and support with having a child with additional needs, including what other organisations are available for you to use. Please contact your local Home-Start for when the course will be coming to an area near you and to enrol yourself upon the course.

If you would like to call to discuss if Home-Start is for you, then please call the office on 01353 663158.

for fake notes. The phoney officer asks the victim to go to the bank, withdraw money and an officer will come round to collect the money. My key message is that banks will never ask you to withdraw money and you should never withdraw money for someone you do not know. You should never give any bank cards or money to anyone at your door, even if they say they are from your bank. The incidents are being investigated by Action Fraud, the national fraud and internet crime reporting centre." To report an incident of fraud, call Action Fraud on 0300 1232040.

Packed with exhibitors, plus workshops and demonstrations, the fair boasts the largest collection of specialist suppliers for Lacemaking, Quilting, Beading, Tatting, Embroidery, Knitting, Gold work, Crochet and most other Needlecrafts assembled in one place providing you with the widest product selection a craftsperson could want. Makit lace is a specialist provider of threads, accessories and books to the Lacemaking, Quilting and Needlecraft communities nationally and internationally. As lacemakers, the company has developed a range of threads which is

possibly the widest in the UK. The company is organising the Makit LQ&N 2014 fair at the East of England Showground in Peterborough on May 11th to promote a mixture of crafts and make products available which are not often available on the High Street. Owner Steve Stephenson explains that there is a crossover in the needlework and quilting business and although threads are available on the High Street, the selection is relatively poor. Lacemakers tend to buy their products from specialist providers and will welcome the chance

to look at exhibits from over 50 national and regional suppliers, all under one roof. Makit Lace and Craft Supplies was formed in the nineties and combines owner Scilla Stephenson’s knowledge of fashion, design and lacemaking with husband Steve’s experience of textile production and conversion. Scilla is an avid lacemaker and they saw a gap in the market after she dragged Steve to a fair at the NEC to get some supplies. They took the opportunity to create a business supplying textile related craft markets and have established a strong relationship with their customers, many of whom have supported them since they started. The company organise two textile related craft supplies Fairs where specialist suppliers provide visitors with a wide product selection plus the opportunity to view product exhibitions, demonstrations and participate in craft “taster” sessions. The fair at the East of England Showground is at The Atrium, Peterborough Arena from 10am to 4.30pm. The entrance fee is £4 at the door, or £3 in advance, and there is free parking. The show will include a display of quilts from the Makit LQN 2014 Quilt Competition and a display of Modern Lace entitled ‘Big, Bold and Beautiful’ by Mrs Jacqui Barber. pril and the beginning of Spring includes Easter and St George’s Day. Sybil Marshall’s parents’ recollections in Ramsey were of looking forward to Good Friday and of Sports and races on Easter Monday. Money was distributed to ‘widows and old maids’ and loaves of bread given at church. (1) Skipping took place at Easter in various Cambridgeshire villages, especially on Good Friday. On Easter Sunday local people wore new clothes to celebrate the day and to ensure good fortune for the future year. St George’s Day April 23rd has been celebrated with a fair in March since 2009, this year on April 27th Although not a Fenlander, St George, in his white tunic with a red cross, features in traditional Fenland mummers’ plays, performed around Christmas and Plough Monday, as the hero whose opponent is often the Turkish Knight. Before 1752 the New Year began on Lady Day, March 25th one of the quarter days when rents were due. The change-over lost 11 days so the following year taxes became due on April 6th and have remained on that date! New churchwardens to be responsible for March town’s money were chosen each year at the beginning of April and in April 1558 in the reign of Queen Mary and Philip of Spain the chosen were Robert Coward saddler and Edmund Conneye. (2) April brought rain and flooding: on April 6th 1680 inhabitants of March, Doddington, Wimblington and Chatteris complained their land was badly

flooded by several streams whose water was too much for the River Nene to carry off. They asked for some outfalls to carry the water from the river. A year later inhabitants of March said that since their petition, Popham’s Eau had been scoured but not enough to carry off the water. They asked for Elm Leam from the River Nene to Wisbech to be scoured. In April 1686 they asked that the River Nene be made deeper and for Popham’s Eau to be scoured as the River Nene was overgrown and damaging their lands because it was full of water from the engine drainage of several fens around March. (3) March Turnpike Road was opened in 1730 and on April 6th 1732 March Turnpike Trustees complained that both the turnpike and the banks of the 20 Foot and Old Bedford River were being damaged by drovers allowed to drive oxen and sheep along the banks. By using the banks, they avoided paying the road tolls. (4)

In 1993 I compiled and directed a show called “Meet Me in the Park” with MADAOS. This was set in “City Park” and recreated a day in the life of a park through songs from musical shows and films. There were no leading roles – everyone who did not have a solo or duet to sing performed in a small group at some point in the show. “Meet Me in the Park” proved very popular with audiences and received good critical reviews in the local press. When MADAOS were looking for a show to perform this Easter I suggested “Meet Me in the Park”, as I thought it would be easy to resurrect something we had done before. I was very pleased when asked to direct the show again, but have learned since starting rehearsals that it is not as easy as just repeating what was done all those years ago! A different cast means different abilities and different voice ranges which has changed the show in many ways. This has had the effect of revitalising the material so that it isn’t just a replay of the old show, but has a new freshness and energy. There are, however, still comedy numbers such as “It’s Never Too Late to Fall in Love” and “Too Darn Hot”, beautiful love songs like “True Love” and “Getting to Know You” and the lively company numbers “Flash, Bang Wallop” and “Once a Year Day”. Three people who were in the 1993 production, plus our then wardrobe mistress and programme designer, appear again in this year’s cast, which I feel confirms the show’s enduring appeal. We have evening performances on Wednesday 9th,Thursday 10th and Friday 11th of April, with a matinee on Saturday 12th April. Rehearsals are going very well and I am confident we will give our audiences a great show, where the cast’s enthusiasm and talent will ensure that everyone leaves humming at least one of the songs!

All tickets cost £7.00 No concessions. Our Box Office will be open at ‘Collingwoods’, Darthill Road, March, 9.30am - 5.00pm (4pm Saturdays, Closed Sundays) fromSaturday 22nd March 2014Telephone: 07523 553 504 Email: [email protected] Bookings: www.madaos.org

espite being present in the town since 1968, March Bears RUFC is still finding it hard to make people aware of its presence. “Some people don’t realise there’s a team here and I think it’s to do with some people’s perception of rugby which is different to what it actually is,” said Bears President Barry Feetham. “Rugby is about camaraderie and respecting the officials and your opponents,” he added. Feetham, who has been associated with March Bears for over 30 years, described the effort the club is making to spread the word and the progress being made, “A lot of interest is through word of mouth, it’s hard because in this area it’s more football than anything else but even they’re struggling. “We have made a real effort to push rugby and we are slowly beginning to see the rewards with players in the senior side. “The age of the team has dropped as we’ve taken a few people who have stopped playing football and joined us, but we could do with more players as sometimes we struggle to put a side out and some weeks have only 13 or 14 players.“It’s difficult to organise and get everyone together as they have other commitments.” He further expanded on the difficulties of running a sports club at grass roots level, “We’re a small club and are finding things hard at the moment. “The most difficult thing is cash flow we’re living from month to month, but the league (The Greene King Country Clubs Competition) is

changing next year and that will mean we can play more games and bring more cash in. “The objective is to set up a team for juniors, but that won’t happen until the finances line up and right now we can’t justify the cost of doing that.” Being president of March Bears requires a commitment of time “too much” time according to Feetham, as he is responsible for doing the ground work, looking after the pitch, minding the bar and any other odd jobs that come up, but he enjoys the relationship he has with the club. “It’s a long term affair”, he said. “I enjoy the camaraderie and the respect that the players have got for each other and the fact that you get to travel to different places and sometimes you get recognised by someone you used to play with. “I like being involved and seeing other people enjoying themselves, it’s what rugby is all about it’s like a big family.” If you’re interested joining March Bears, Feetham made it clear that everyone is welcome, “We train at 6.45pm on a Wednesday, and if you are thinking of getting involved come down to the club and join in the training sessions and if you want to play you’re welcome,” he said. And when asked to sum up March Bears in three words Feetham opted for “Enjoyment, hospitality and friendship.”

44 Discovering March April 2014

CFRs are members of the public from a range of different back grounds who have volunteered to respond to emergency life threatening calls within their local community. CFR s need to be 18 and over, able to drive, have access to their own car, and also need to be in good health. The aim of the responder is to respond to immediate life threatening 999 calls received by the Ambulance Service CFRs are activated by telephone call or a pre-alert text message, when there is no ambulance available or if an Ambulance is not within the immediate area. CFRs are not a substitute for an ambulance, and so an ambulance or an ambulance response car will always be sent to back up the CFR. There are around 1,200 CFRs and 270 groups

EAST OF ENGLAND AMBULANCE COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERSThe East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust is looking for new volunteers to come on board as community first responders (CFRs)

who live or work in March.operating across the East of England region responding to a variety of incidents. Last year Volunteers across the region gave up approximately 40,000 hours of their time each month, CFRs were dispatched to over 22,493 emergency calls, this included 662 cardiac Arrests. CFRs undertake an initial18 hours of training of which is a mixture of practical and theoretical assessments to aid each CFR to deal with a number of specific emergency calls, that range from people with Breathing problems, Diabetics, Falls, Heart problems which includes Cardiac Arrests, Strokes, Unconscious patients and Convulsions. During the training course new CFRs will be taught Basic life support and the use of automated external defibrillator (AED), Airway Management and the use of Oropharyngeal airways, Oral Suction, Recovery position, Oxygen therapy, Patient assessment, Medical Conditions and Pulse Ox Training. When the CFR arrives at scene he/she will undertake a full assessment of the patient, and administer any appropriate interventions which includes some lifesaving interventions. When the ambulance crew arrives the CFR will give the crew a full hand over of the history and condition of the casualty and any other relevant information. CFRs may be asked to assist Ambulance crews whilst on scene. CFR schemes are set up by the East of England Ambulance service, but once established we are self-funding, aside from free training and assessments for the volunteers. We also need the community along with local business to support the group which can be done through sponsorship, donations or the raising of money through charity days e.g coffee mornings, raffles, sponsored events. The more community support the group can gain the more support it can give back and help those people in their time of need and even help save a life.SO IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO SOMEONES LIFE OR EVEN SAVE ONE THEN BECOME A COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDER

InfoFor further information and to arrange an informal chat or even if you would like to raise money for the March Community First Responders please contact: Martin Peacock, March CFR Coordinator: [email protected]. Or for an application form please email: [email protected].
