PeoPle: Programs to Help Individuals Become IndependentBecause you hire our job seekers with disadvantages and disabilities, you help people become self-sufficient, tax-paying citizens who support themselves and their families which, in turn, stimulates our economy. Goodwill helps people with the greatest needs in our communities.

PlaneT: Sound Environmental PracticesBecause you donate and shop in our retail centers, you help prevent landfill pollution and produce critical revenue to fund our programs. For example, when you donated used computer equipment in 2011, you helped us recycle 534 tons of e-waste through our partnership with Dell. And thanks to your donations, you helped divert over 30,035,000 pounds of unwanted goods from landfills.

PerForManCe: A Strong Financial PositionWhen you partner with us, you help create efficient, sustainable business models that improve our community one person at a time. Because of this, we are an engine of growth and an economic stimulator. And by giving financial gifts, you help us develop new solutions to our communities’ challenging social issues by using nearly 90% of our revenue directly for programs.

through the community’s support, Goodwill continues to grow and serve people in more ways than ever before. As we expand, we want everyone to discover more about the amazing things Goodwill does every day to benefit the communities we serve. That is why we are changing our name from Goodwill Industries of Colorado Springs to a new name and logo that better represent the continuing evolution of our life-changing organization.

As underserved populations continue to increase and government funded resources continue to shrink, we must reinvent ourselves by developing new ideas, business models and sources of revenue. There is a great opportunity to enhance our current partnerships while we also focus on developing more public-private partnerships.

We are an organization that offers innovative programs and provides a new level of community resources. These resources not only serve the community, but also thrive on community interaction, support and partnerships—as such, the next evolution of Goodwill has emerged.

A long-time Goodwill employee, michael started a new chapter when he was employed

at Goodwill’s Fresh Start Commercial Laundry in 2002. A short time later, michael’s level

of confidence and determination shifted into high gear and, in 2011, his demonstrated

supervision skills served him well in his role as lead of sorting operations—overseeing

quality control for Fresh Start’s fast-paced, high-volume environment.

Affectionately known as “Big mike” by his co-workers, michael is a leader and constant

inspiration to everyone around him. On rare occasions when he is persuaded to break

from work, michael enjoys singing at his church, traveling with his wife and assembling

model cars. As the sole income earner in his home, michael not only has found the road to

independence, he is on the expressway to a happy and fulfilled life.

Fifty-seven-year-old michael Engelhardt

has always been a dedicated, resourceful worker—dating back to his younger years when he hand-washed vehicles at an auto dealership for 25 cents per car. But a serious motorcycle accident in the prime of his life significantly hindered his physical mobility and future career prospects, causing michael to question whether he would ever find the road to independence.

maria Swartz was quite content early in her married life. But

the stay-at-home mom’s world turned upside down after her marriage abruptly ended and maria was confronted with a new reality as a single mother raising two daughters and lacking the education or work experience to secure more than part-time, minimum-wage jobs. Her increasing inability to meet monthly obligations and provide for her children made maria uneasy about the future.

Fortunately, maria’s life took a significant and unexpected turn for the better after she

enrolled in Goodwill’s Certified nursing Assistant (CnA) program in 2011. Within

a few months, maria received her CnA certification and was hired at the namaste

Alzheimer Center, where she now shares her compassionate and caring spirit with

residents in their greatest time of need.

maria’s new found independence has taught her daughters that faith, hard work

and determination can overcome any obstacle. Her girls have taken this message to

heart—including 15-year-old Korissa, who beamed with pride watching her mother

graduate from Goodwill’s CnA program and declared that she, too, was going to

become a nurse or doctor one day. Approaching each day with great resolve and

a radiant smile that matches her warm personality, maria can now provide for her

family and delights in spreading joy and encouragement to residents each day.

John Schwarz whole-heartedly believes in

the motto “treat others as you would like to be treated,” and he applies it in all areas of his life. Served by Goodwill since 2004, John is an assembler in the Work Skills Development Program. During 2011, John’s increased attention to detail and demonstrated leadership qualities earned him the added responsibility of supervising the work of his colleagues.

Along with the life-transforming skills and incredible confidence he has gained since

joining Goodwill, John is very thankful for a family that has been a constant source

of encouragement—both personally and professionally.

John likes to stay active at home as well as on the job, with a regular exercise

routine that includes swimming, walking on the track and shooting hoops in the gym.

A life-long Denver Bronco fan, John enjoys cheering on the orange and blue from his

front-row seat in the living room. He also exercises his creativity and eye for detail

building elaborate structures from his vast LEGO® collection.

Whether collating envelopes at work, playing basketball at the ymCA or

constructing miniature LEGO homes, John makes the most of each day and brings

out the best in those around him.

Following the painful ending of a 14-year marriage, Dianna was left alone with five

children, ranging in age from two to 12, with no formal job skills and limited financial

support. But her resourceful and entrepreneurial instincts soon took hold and, with the

assistance of Goodwill’s Child Care Licensing program, Dianna opened her own child care

business. Twelve years later, Dianna put her business savvy and strong relational skills to

work for Goodwill as an advisor in the milestones Case management Program.

Dianna firmly believes there is a path of success for each and every individual Goodwill

serves, and she delights in helping her clients overcome their apprehension and reach

their full potential. Dianna’s determination and compassion for those she serves personifies

the vision of Goodwill founder Dr. Edgar J. Helms and also makes her a natural fit for this

prestigious award honoring his legacy.

job seekers at Goodwill’s milestones Business Center, one thing is immediately apparent—she’s a natural in her role providing counseling and encouragement to individuals facing economic and vocational challenges. In fact, Dianna once walked in their shoes, and she never forgets the compassionate care she received more than two decades ago when she first entered Goodwill’s doors seeking assistance.

2011 HiGHliGHTs

Pueblo reTail CenTer With great excitement and collaboration, Goodwill began the expansion of our retail services in Pueblo. A 30,000 sq. ft. retail and donation center, located at 3610 Dillon Drive, is slated to open in may 2012 and represents Goodwill’s ninth retail center offering great deals on gently used goods. We are delighted to begin working with Pueblo’s community leaders and fellow nonprofits to determine what resources can best serve the people of Pueblo.

PossibiliTies Goodwill continued laying the groundwork for

our newest program “Possibilities”-- a first-of-its-kind program creating everyday living experiences to teach

individuals with intellectual and physical challenges important life skills. using a real community of businesses built inside our new campus, this innovative approach to programming

encourages safe and unlimited learning through education, recreation and engagement.

CaPiTal CaMPaiGn Goodwill successfully kicked off the “Paths to Independence”

Capital Campaign to raise $10 million to fund the purchase of our new campus, Possibilities and a tunnel washer for

the commercial laundry. With generous gifts from Goodwill’s supporters, nearly $9.3 million was raised in 2011 alone! Of that, $5.35 million was gifted by El Pomar Foundation through the purchase and future donation of Goodwill’s new campus and

$1 million was given by the Daniels Fund to help launch Possibilities.

Cna ProGraM Goodwill initiated our Certified nursing

Assistant (CnA) training program for job seekers moving from welfare to work. Goodwill began

the program knowing CnAs are in demand and the profession offers jobs seekers flexible schedules, a good wage and great benefits. In the program’s first six months, 22 CnA candidates enrolled and 15 individuals became certified. Goodwill continues to place these new CnAs in jobs with local health care providers – partnerships that bring to life Goodwill’s many sustainable business models.

GooDwill CaMPus Goodwill acquired our new campus at 1460 Garden of the Gods road through El Pomar

Foundation’s generously purchasing the building, leasing it to Goodwill and then donating the building to Goodwill at the end of the lease term. By consolidating administration and

select programs, Goodwill is able to better serve clients by broadening our reach and embracing the opportunities of tomorrow.

The Foundation’s Guiding Light Award is given at Goodwill’s Annual Dinner in recognition of leadership, stewardship and philanthropic commitment to Goodwill. Congratulations to this year’s Guiding Light award recipient, Jon medved.

From 1985 to 2011, Jon was a member of Goodwill’s boards serving as chairman of both the Goodwill Board and Foundation Board. In addition, Jon holds the unique distinction of having served on three committees that helped

select Goodwill presidents Pete Hoke, Bob Baker and Karla Grazier.

Jon’s leadership continues as co-chair of Goodwill’s $10 million “Paths to Independence” Capital Campaign. In addition to their annual and capital support, Jon and his wife Becky are members of The Good Will Society because they included Goodwill as a beneficiary in their estate.

GooDwill FounDaTion

The increasing demand for health care workers combined with high unemployment in Colorado Springs, led Goodwill to the creation of our innovative Certified nursing Assistant (CnA) training program. As part of Goodwill’s welfare-to-work program, and in partnership with Front range nursing, qualifying job seekers are recruited, trained and certified as CnAs and then placed in jobs with local health care providers. Grants and scholarships enabled Goodwill to provide training free-of-charge to students otherwise unable to afford the program.

The “Paths to Independence” Capital Campaign launched in spring 2011 with the “quiet phase” of our $10 million campaign dedicated to our groundbreaking Possibilities program, new campus and commercial laundry. Thousands of individuals with disabilities, their families and the community at large will benefit from the educational and employment opportunities resulting from the success of this campaign.

Generous support from Goodwill’s boards and employees, El Pomar Foundation, the Daniels Fund, Chapman Foundations and numerous other foundations, individuals and businesses raised $9.3 million. With just over $700,000 left to raise, Goodwill invites our donors and the community to invest in this important campaign. 12

Goodwill’s Life at the Bluffs adult day program (soon to be called voyages) serves seniors and veterans who need significant attention during the day due to medical conditions such as early Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, Parkinson’s, head injuries, diabetes, cancer and other medical ailments. The program provides social interaction, stimulating activities and community outings for seniors.

The majority of seniors are on medicaid. Contributions helped offset the cost of this program and offered complimentary “nights out” to allow caregivers much needed respite.

The Good Will Society was formed in 2004 to recognize and thank

individuals who invest in our future by including Discover Goodwill Foundation

as a beneficiary in their estate. members have notified us during their lifetime

of their gift to Goodwill through their will, trust or other planned gift.
